Even if we don’t trade for Eichel it’s obvious Gorton has something significant in mind, especially with the Staal trade

Eh, I think the Staal trade was clearing cap for any number of reasons, not necessarily as part of some big planned move. If the Rangers just wanted to sign their RFA's then they needed to make a move and maybe bring Fast back.

I do think they want to make some moves, as we've all speculated I'm sure they'd like to solidify their center position and LD, but I doubt they're really banking on making a run at a huge name to do all of these things

JG laying the ground work now. The chances that cheap ass Pegula and his meddling wife put together even a wildcard team in that city any time soon is not happening. It’s not a question of “if” Eichel wants out it’s a “when.”

Land of no calls..
If Zibanejad is anything remotely close to this year, a 40-40 guy that kills penalties and is a 3-zone player, I don't see how he's a goner, especially if the Rangers do choose to name a Zibanejad the captain.

Because financially it's virtually impossible. The Rangers almost certainly aren't giving up Lafreniere, Fox, Igor, or Kakko for Eichel. So where is the money for those guys coming from if you have Zib, Eichel, and Panarin all making $10m+ per year?

A trade for Eichel is to give the team insane depth for the next several years and to find a healthier, younger #1C going forward.

only 2 tweets are being displayed here. need to click to go to twitter to see the FULL twitter thread from mckenzie

Summarized in the final tweet
1) Eichel does NOT want to be traded
2) the sabres are NOT trading Eichel

JG was simply doing his job if he heard Eichel was available by calling to find out if it was true and if so the asking price.

literally nothing to see here until #1 and/or #2 change.

I mean, what do we expect them to say? Agree w others this seems like a soft leak from Eichel's camp.

Coupled w/@Edge tidbits on BUF-NYR conversations, I don't think its too much of a stretch to read some smoke hear.

Obviously smoke is a long long way from a done deal.

Neither do I.

I respect @Edge and his information greatly, but I don't buy this at all. If he wants out (maybe he doesn't, but it sounds like he does) he'll never return fair value for Buffalo.

They get picks, they'll get some good prospects, a strong roster player or 2, but this idea that they'll get some franchise defining talent is silly. Teams don't trade those guys unless they have to.

Well, I've been pretty clear that I don't think the Rangers go there. But I can't rule it out completely either.

There's just too many people who think it's at least a remote possibility.

But at this point, I feel like every time I say 90/10 I'm in one of those "shoot the messenger" holding patterns.

I don't think Lafreniere is on the table for the Rangers. Probably Kakko isn't either.

Any other player not named Fox or Shesterkin? Possibly.

And this is what makes sense. People downplaying Eichel are severely underrating what he has been able to do on a Buffalo team that has been HORRENDOUS. He's Panarin-level skilled and only 24 years old.

Assuming that's true, then we would have to trade someone/something in addition to Zibanejad. Eichel's cap hit is almost twice as much as Zib's, as well. So any deal for Eichel is likely to leave us with less depth and/or less cap space.

But hey, let's load up on 10 mil forwards, because that strategy has worked so well for Toronto.
I mean, they're already thinking about trading ADA, Strome, Georgiev, and Buch, and buying out Lundqvist, and if it was just Zib for Eichel straight up, they also just cleared the other 5m from trading Staal

I'd take Eichel over Zibanejad pretty easily if the acquisition cost wasn't stupid and we weren't staring down the barrel of a stagnant cap for the next 3 years :dunno:

No way they trade Panarin. The optics alone would look horrible. Zibanejad I could see...but not Panarin.
Yeah, Panarin has a full NTC (I think...?) and wants to live in a big city, so I don't think Buffalo would be a welcome move for him.

Idk with panarin being 10.5, trouba 8m last yr you would think no, but honestly you have to think ab it this way. You just found a connector. Close your eyes, imagine this top six lineup-
Panarin- zib- kakko
Laf-eichel-kreider/buch

I have two trades i would do-
1) 22nd overall, vitaly kravstov, deangelo, 2022 scnd that becomes a 1st if they win the cup.
Heres where i look at it this way- kravstov is rn high in value, you got deangelo needing big bucks, you got that 22nd overall and a chance for a late first in 2 yrs. If they do this move, theyre pushing into contender status. You still need to move money but this trade only works with hanks status settled. You have only lindgren on the left and then you have to replace deangelo with someone. The d would be too green. So, for those purposes, you can trade for a 2nd pair with a return from strome and you can either bury smith in the minors for a 1.1 cap hit reduction or you can trade him to ott. But this move puts them into contender and maybe they kind of are turning jnto one. I wouldnt move our top six wjth the exception of strome for this deal and if chytil is an ask, then id switch him out for kravstov and add in a prospect to work it out.
2) kreider+kravstov-/chytil+22nd overall+ robertson. This deal only works if kreiders nmc didnt kick in yet.

The worst part about this is the fact we would be sending people to Buffalo. Not that it matters for our team but I don’t wanna see our former players become like ROR, Berglund, or Lehner during their time in there.

The money we saved from trading Staal will go toward paying ADA and Strome and filling out the rest of the roster.
