I think that’s assumed...at least for me, I assume bargain shopping (“dumpster diving” is a bit harshi'd wait to see who gets bought out or not qualified before rushing over to the discount bin
I think he's a good target, but I really would like to avoid any long-term deals for depth pieces like Larsson. They have enough cap issues to navigate over the next few seasons, and I don't think it's worth having a high-priced fourth liner on the books. I guess they could just leave him unprotected in expansion, but I still prefer to keep the cap sheet clean.I’m down for a little dumpster-diving (although these guys are actually solid players) provided they have a little bit a cap space.
How much do you think Larsson signs for? $2-2.5M x 4 years?
Totally agree. No need to rush any decisions. With the cost effective assets and new flat cap reality, patience is key. Plus the bottom 6 is a good place to see if your prospects are ready and nhl caliber players for one more year of the rebuild. No need to rush into contracts with older bottom 6 vets that block prospects. Not a good idea financially or developmentally. I'd be giving Anderson and Barron a long leash to fill a 4th line role.A general comment...the dollars and term being speculated for some of the non star level players in the league simply do not work in a flat cap world. Dollars and term will be less and less.
Have the big man spoken once since the fallout from the Jets? Let alone coming back?I think they need to add from outside for the bottom 6. And it needs to be of quality too. And fits a role. Not just some journeyman looking to hang around as long as he can just get NHL minutes a la Mckegg, etc. As much as some here think a kid like Barron can just assume a 4th line role, 1) nothing should be assumed 2) you need experience there not inexperience 3) getting 8 minutes per game would be horrible for his development, all because we have prospect hungry fans who just want to see every one of them play at the NHL yesterday. You need the right pieces in the right places. Dallas has a good mix of internally developed players and outside vets in their bottom 6. So does Tampa. The best teams typically do.
The past couple years there have been vets who have signed on the very cheap to join contending or competitive teams. Maroon, Perry, Boyle, Brassard. Some have more of an impact than others on the scoresheet. Some add a different style of play. Some add leadership in the room, experience. There will be a laundry list this year to choose from.
Colin Wilson
Clifford
Boyle
Brassard
Simmonds
Nordstrom
Kuraly
Byfuglien (maybe on the cheap and a potential replacement for Tony D’s spot)
Koivu (if willing to play elsewhere)
Thornton
Soderberg
Craig Smith
Eakin
Haula
Janmark
Lewis
Girgensons
I'm seeing some "buyout Smith" stuff taking more traction. I don't think that is a good idea. First of all, too many buyouts. It's embarrassing. Second of all, in a flat cap for the next 2 seasons, Smith might have the most value he ever has and I would actually look to resign him after his deal is up for the ability to kill 2 birds with one stone as your 13th forward and 7th dman. That seems like a good thing to have and a smart money decision, especially for the Rangers, who spend all their time right at the cap.

Smith at forward abjectly did not work and should never be a thing again, even as a backup.I'm seeing some "buyout Smith" stuff taking more traction. I don't think that is a good idea. traction where?

Only a small amount. 2 articles and a youtuber. I haven't listened to any podcasts to see where they stand on the subject. Also, I apologize if my choice of words made it sound like I had inside knowledge or "sources". I do not.
but fan blogs or real sources?

Not sure it needs to be a long-term (though I guess that depends on your definition of what those words mean) so much as a short-medium term. Strome as a stop-gap for 2-4 years allows for the Rangers to see what Chytil is and if lacking, guage the trade market. And if Chytil proves himself within that time frame, no real big deal. Strome slides down to third line or plays wing on the middle two. Or is dealt.I think its a pretty safe assumption that JG would prefer to go into the season with a long term solution at 2C. but that doesn't mean a deal is out there or the cap space allows it. And you don't give strome a multi-year deal just to 'avoid' that scenario cause that gets you into cap trouble.
Ideally if strome is still here, we can get him on a reasonable deal for multiple years knowing that he can move to 3c or wing if needed (or traded later). but it is also possible that his cap hit will make this hard to do, especially if he goes to arbitration.
I actually do not think that Smith goes anywhere this year and starts the year as a defenseman in the starting 6.Unless the Rangers wound up landing a player that they absolutely had to clear money out for I don't think anyone other than Hank is getting bought out. Smith played well enough with Trouba to earn himself a longer look and the fact that he can play D or F while killing penalties in both cases is pretty darn useful, even if he's overpaid cap-wise.
Plus, it seems to be that players with lower salary but higher cap-hits are poised to be somewhat of a hot ticket. Smith and even Staal might actually be appealing as a trade target to teams looking to shave salary and stay above the cap floor.
out of curiosity and hypotheticals:
If and big if here the panthers are willing to trade Barkov this or next off season what would a deal look like?
Probably too rich for our blood.
Would probably look something like this:
Chytil + Buchnevich + Robertson/Miller/Jones + 2021 1st + 2022 1st with protections. Might even need another piece or two.

There’s a big difference between 2 and 4 years. Not sure it needs to be a long-term (though I guess that depends on your definition of what those words mean) so much as a short-medium term. A 2-4 year deal for Strome as a stop gap is a no-loose proposition.
Couple of things:
1) They likely won't want Buchnevich because he will be a UFA at end of this contract and will be looking for a raise on his current 3.25M salary.
2) There is a huge difference between Miller and Robertson/Jones
3) Two firsts (which should be late in the round) are not all that appealing
4) Barkov will be looking for a big deal at the end of 21-22. And while the Ranger will have some big contracts coming off the books, there will be other players who will need contracts.
