Rutherford must have sobered up by noon and has been trying to nix this trade since then. Matheson @ $5 Million AAV for the next 6 seasons is not the type of reclamation project you see teams normally sign up for. It doesnt help Pittsburgh with their cap situation either to create room and fill out the roster around Crosby for however many productive years he has left at an top level

I don't understand the hype around Brendan Lemieux. He's a fun player to watch when he's not playing like an idiot (so, what? 50% of the time at best?) But when it all comes down to it, what's his actual upside at this point? Derek Dorsett? A useful player to have but nothing I'd consider earth shattering.

Weren't people genuinely discussing the need to protect him in the expansion draft a few weeks back? A player the team was rumored to be open to flipping the same day he was traded for?

I like the player, but I definitely wouldn't treat him like this untouchable core piece.
I don't recall this, Coleman.

I think I have read that Pittsburg need to save money. They will save 1,8 mill for each of the next two years. Florida, all though not reported to have an internal cap, could also save a lot of money on this trade. Could let Dadonov or Hoffman go, replace him with Hornquist. And let a player on a cheap contract replace Matheson.

If you think we're dialed in, the Penguins are on Part II of the Hornqvist - Matheson trade thread already. We're getting shown up.
We are dialed in and focused. But nothing is as loud as the mad man losing his mind on the corner

It would also depend on how the team views Chytil. If they see his trajectory as more than just a 3C this season, say even a 2B, then going for someone else on shorter deal like a Granlund, Turris or Wennberg could make sense as their contracts should be in the 1-2 year range and the cap hits should be manageable even if they settle into that 3C role.
I understand this, and agree to a certain extent, but if that’s the case, why wouldn’t you just keep Strome?

If they only sign Strome for a year though I almost guarantee Gorton moves him at the deadline

So it wouldn't be totally for nothing

This is possible, although I am not sure Gorton wants to go into a season where, if the team is competing for a playoff spot, they need to move their 2C or ‘self rent’. I’d rather avoid that decision now

I think its a pretty safe assumption that JG would prefer to go into the season with a long term solution at 2C. but that doesn't mean a deal is out there or the cap space allows it. And you don't give strome a multi-year deal just to 'avoid' that scenario cause that gets you into cap trouble.

Ideally if strome is still here, we can get him on a reasonable deal for multiple years knowing that he can move to 3c or wing if needed (or traded later). but it is also possible that his cap hit will make this hard to do, especially if he goes to arbitration.

Listen if they think that Chytil is the guy at 2C and Strome is only here for 1 more year, they're gonna trade Strome at the deadline and tell Chytil "it's your time to shine"

It's not like they're going to be a powerhouse next season, if they even make the playoffs they should consider it a win

I don't see anyway Gorton would self rent Strome. They only held onto Fast because he wasn't worth much. Strome will bring back something good enough to move, regardless of where they are at in the playoffs.

'Zactly.

I don't get that. Outside of other factors that might make Morgan not desirable, we have a defensively mind LD in Lindgren, prospect of Miller eventually becoming a two-way and this scenario assumes that DeAngelo is moved out. I'd have absolutely no problem with bringing LD who excels on offense.

Honestly if you like ADA I can't see how you'd hate Reilly.
Assuming the skill levels are a wash, Rielly is two years closer to UFA and there are twice as many left shots than right shots in the league.

Yup, specifically mentioned “other factors” in my post and was responding to those who were putting him down as a hockey player - as nothing more but a beneficiary of playing with elite talent up front.

Honestly the only FA's that interest me are the bargain bin guys.

Craig Smith, Colin Wilson, Zemgus Giergensons, Johan Larsson, Mattias Janmark, Matt Nieto, Kyle Clifford (his bargain bin-ness can be argued.)
I’m down for a little dumpster-diving (although these guys are actually solid players) provided they have a little bit a cap space.

How much do you think Larsson signs for? $2-2.5M x 4 years?
