I'm operating under the assumption that he is coming with a pre-negotiated extension. He may very well not be, and I guess I'll come to terms with that if/when it happens. But for the sake of discussion, it's more fun for me to assume he is
And you might be right! Obviously, the Rangers acquired Trouba last year under similar circumstances and only signed him once he got here.

(EDIT: Though I should add it's not a great comp since Trouba essentially forced his way here and so we had a preeetty good sense he'd be signing long term.) :)

Honestly, if the Wild were to move Brodin without an extension, I think those two wouldn't be bad targets and I suspect your FO might attribute more value to them than many posters on here would. We're in a position none of us is used to with a friggin' boatload of picks and prospects, and consequently, since those two guys have hit some speed bumps, they've dropped way down our internal rankings to the point that some posters have even written them off completely. If our system looked the way it did two years ago, we'd be hugging them a lot closer even with their issues.

Combine them with, say, a mid round pick and I think that might make sense for Brodin with only one year remaining. Extended, on the other hand, I think you need more.
See, now that's too much IMO for Brodin with only one year left. Extended, it starts to make more sense.
Yeah, without really looking deeper into this, it feels like there's a deal somewhere here that could work for both teams, they'd just need to figure out how to balance the scales to make both sides comfortable with pulling the trigger

Seems like he might be available if Montreal signs Edmundson. 2 years at 1.75M left which is a ridiculously valuable contract.

Yes x10000000000.

It won't happen since it seems like we're never on these guys, but he's basically like NYR Stralman minus the epic break up D (it's still pretty good.)

Would work well with DeAngelo and buy time for the LHD with out costing a ton in assets or on the cap.

Right. Can't really think of a better fit for us honestly for all the reasons outlined.

Brodin and Dunn are good but both will cost a lot more than he would.

As somewhat of an aside, since your team is apparently interested in Brodin, what are the thoughts on something around a Brodin that's going to sign an extension with you for Hajek+Andersson? Realistically, who adds and how much? I know very little about Hajek and only slightly more about Andersson. How do they project and what type of players are they?
Done. No takesies backsies.

I think the 22nd overall is in play if Brodin comes with an extension, but if I'm the Rangers, I don't think I'd sign Brodin to an extension unless DeAngelo is moved for a forward. The Rangers need to protect Trouba and Lindgren as well.

My early protection list looks like

Panarin
Zibanejad
Kreider
Chytil
Howden
Buchnevich
Gauthier

Trouba
DeAngelo
Lindgren

Shesterkin

The Rangers stand to lose a good defenseman if they trade for and extend Brodin without moving someone else out first.

I'd protect Gauthier over Howden, but otherwise, that's my list too

Isn't he only an upcoming second year NHL player, and therefore exempt? I would too if he's eligible to be poached.
The exemption is/was for 'Pro' years which includes NHL and AHL/ECHL

Gauthier currently has three pro-seasons, will have four by the time expansion rolls around.

That’s my list as well (though I suspect it’ll look different as soon as a month from now) except I protect Georgiev (if he’s still here) because Shesterkin is exempt.
