With the exception of deadline moves when this team is truly in it's window, I agree and think dealing future's en masse is a little ways off. And even then, I expect it to be calculated.

As you said, the NHL is built upon having your core players and then being able to cycle out the talent surrounding them.

Sometimes that means drafting well and getting those ELCs that provide value, and sometimes that means moving guys due for a payday and bringing in younger/cheaper talent.
My 'back of the napkin's calculation tells me a team can generally afford a good top six, a good goalie, and three defensemen. Something like that. The rest should be ELCs and vet role players. I would think the Rangers kind of have their "keystones" set. Now it's the fun part.

I’ve said this for a year or two but what a young team really needs is a viable, veteran 4th line. Guys who know their roles and can handle and support in those tough minutes. Guys who show up every night and will push back when needed.

Gorton has done a phenomenal job at accruing young talent but there comes a time when they need to make some decisions and start getting some support guys. Dominic Moore held this type of role for more than a few years. Brian Boyle. The key also being that you can’t overpay first these guys either.
Guys like Boyle and Brassard signed for pennies this past year.

I’d look at Boyle this offseason for the 4th line who can take faceoffs, PK, and be a leader in the room.

Retained the max. Even if he comes back and is just okay, Minnesota can move him at the deadline as a depth piece for more than a 7th. They can retain another 50%

They can probably find a taker for Fleury if he'll waive, if not they can trim off bits by getting rid of Carrier, Reeves, and Holden, or a bigger chunk with Martinez

I was thinking Carrier and Reaves would be nice additions. If anything I would think they’d want to ADD to their defense.

And if I’m Fleury, no chance I’m waiving.

I would have been into Bjugstad at 2 million as a stand in for Strome at 2C. I think he'd put up better numbers.

I think they're kind of in a similar spot as the Rangers are in the sense that some bigger contracts are coming off the books at the end of next season and they might need to rework their bottom-six or send out a guy with a bigger number who might be a little more important to the team to get through next season. And Fleury did waive last time he wasn't wanted somewhere, so I wouldn't be surprised if he did again. For all we know they've already had a talk with him about it and his agent was getting out in front of everything to plant the seed of 'my client has been back stabbed' to save face and be the good guys when he's on the move in the summer
