My 'back of the napkin's calculation tells me a team can generally afford a good top six, a good goalie, and three defensemen. Something like that. The rest should be ELCs and vet role players. I would think the Rangers kind of have their "keystones" set. Now it's the fun part.With the exception of deadline moves when this team is truly in it's window, I agree and think dealing future's en masse is a little ways off. And even then, I expect it to be calculated.
As you said, the NHL is built upon having your core players and then being able to cycle out the talent surrounding them.
Sometimes that means drafting well and getting those ELCs that provide value, and sometimes that means moving guys due for a payday and bringing in younger/cheaper talent.
