Just poking around Capfriendly and holy shit the salary structure on that Nick Schmaltz deal. Nice of Chayka to leave that time bomb for the next GM. Jesus.

Chayka was the genius that answered what happens to a player's motivation level when you give them a retirement contract at 21-22, and they aren't a franchise level player.

Buying out Staal or Smith wouldn't have cleared enough cap space to get us under the cap. We also were loaded on the right side and didn't need him.

It WAS brilliant, because it created the opportunity for Fox and DeAngelo to step up and have the seasons they had.

No need to interfere. Don’t you think these points are obvious today just as they were obvious when Shatty was bought out.
As you well know some just choose to ignore reason.

I wasn’t fully convinced Fox was NHL ready at the time. I’m usually not convinced until it happens. Not saying I thought he wasn’t, I just wasn’t sure. He proved it pretty quick.

So what does that mean? I’m back to my first A and B

A. Maybe we just don’t know if there were similar calls on Howden and Gauthier

B. Teams called Gorton so there’s not much indication of how he feels - maybe he just didn’t like what other teams were offering in return

What am I missing?
What you’re missing is you’re asking me to prove a negative - which is pointless, if not impossible.

Hey guess what, Kevin Shattenkirk, is a good third pair defenseman in a favorable situation. When it comes to defending, TB throws out a guys like Ruuta, Bogosian, Schenn, and Cernak. They go: Hedman, McDonagh, Next. And they find mismatches for the Shattenkirk outings, especially in the O-Zone with the Gourde unit. They do a very good job of getting those matchups.

I'm not sure this would happen, but I would love to see a Lias for Juolevi deal. 6th overall pick from the 2016 draft that has played just a single NHL game for the 7th overall pick from 2017 who has played more than a single NHL game. He's a guy that can push for a spot on that LD.

I'm going to go on record as saying I think we're letting Fast go at precisely the right time.

He's not going to get any better than he currently is, he's coming off a good season that will see him well paid in free agency.

It's just so much easier to replace bottom 6 players than top 6 players. It's cynical, but there's a much higher supply of effort, character, and defensive responsibility than there is game-changing talent. It also gives us another year to make a final decision on if we are going to flip Buchnevich or commit to him long term.

On Staal-Shattenkirk, I wouldve preferred Marc be bought out, but since we aren't going to be 'all in' this upcoming season anyways, the huge cap bounceback is less of an issue.

Yeah, I wanted to re-sign Fast for most of the year because I felt like he's one of our only forwards that can actually check effectively (and not just hitting for the sake of hitting), but I'm not sure that's worth a multi-year contract at 3.5Mish per year.

I hope we can find some of that effective sandpaper for cheaper.

Left side was even worse from the experience perspective and didn't have someone like Fox ready to step in (without knowing how successful that would be).

And yet, our top 6 was good last year, and our bottom 6 was terrible.

I agree with you, but Fast playing in the top 6 was part of that issue.

And I realize the conflicting nature of what I've just said, but I do think we can build a better bottom 6 through the system rather than paying UFA age players.

Fast will not be easy to replace as evidenced by there only being 1 of him on the squad last year and having to use a career AHLer in PDG on the 1st line because of lack of available Jesper Fasts.

I can't think of a better available babysitter for Laf's first few months itl than Jesper Fast. Hopefully he doesn't price himself out.

its about priorities and depth (which is a combination of lack of cap space and kids needing time). the bottom 6 will come together and I have no doubt the team knows the importance, we just need time. I expect the depth to be better next year and the following year when some cap space is available and some of the kids are more ready/established we will hopefully see a more complete team formed.

the problem with the bottom 6 was that the players in it were mismatched (Chytil) not NHLers (McKegg, PDG, Nieves, Fogarty, Haley) or really f***ing bad (Howden, Andersson, Kakko, SMITH ON THE 4TH LINE). The only consistently good bottom 6 player was likely Lemieux and I feel like he wasn't used as well as he could be.

If anything, at all, even if Fast goes we have a full lineup to avoid McKegg/PDG tom f***ery, a very noticeably improved Kakko (which was only a matter of time IMO), Smith as far the f*** away from the 4th line as possible, and maybe finding Lemieux/Gaut a more consistent role.
