@Ola ’s point that he’s made in the past could be reconciling your positions. It is that giving a long-term RFA contract based on (supported) expectations is not a big risk if the player underperforms (not to be mistaken with a complete shitshow). Not difficult to fix an error judgement and move such contract.

Yeah for sure, its night and day and unfortunately we don't act accordingly.

Zaitsev's play tackled off from 36 pts to 14 pts and Toronto could trade him 1 year in on a 7 year deal. We got a 1st for Skjei. Meanwhile, guys like Staal and Girardi and Smith has cost so much year in and year out for forever it seems like. Kreider could definitely turn out to be another contract that really cost us, unfortunately.

If a young kid like JT Miller or Kevin Hayes want a 5 year contract when they are 22-23 y/o we are really really restrictive with them. McD got longer contract. Ziba got a longer contract. Kreider got a longer 2nd contract (right?). But nobody else, besides Skjei of course.

does anyone know when the first buyout period is?

It's the later of June 15th or 48 hours after the conclusion of the SCF. Obviously we are well past June 15th, so I assume it will begin 48 hours after the finals end.

Lafreniere - Chytil - Fast
That line could be sneaky! I like it and overall that lineup is very balanced. I think we have a great shot to bring back Fast. If Howden shows improvement that could be a good 4th line as well.
No big moves there, we see how the team looks and the kids develop THEN make moves when the contracts come off the books. Instead of making drastic changes like many want here.

Some changes are going to happen regardless. We need to clear cap space if we want to re-sign Strome and ADA, or we'll have to move one of them.

I like Fast, but his age , style of play, and salary give me hesitation. He is a heart and soul guy who plays tough but the miles are adding up and there are others guys who are waiting in the wings. He is one of the difficult decisions to make at a strange point in the timeline.

Thinking the gap between want Fast would be willing to accept and what the Rangers could offer is too much.

I'm not proposing that the Rangers do this, nor am I sure if I would do it, or if LA would do it, but I think it makes some sense for both teams.

Kakko for the 2nd overall pick. We draft Byfield.

We get the center we need, they get the winger they need.

I always wince a bit when I read “no way”, especially someone who’s a 4th liner so by definition, relatively low on the list of roster ranking.

I mean wouldn’t you describe Howden the same way (targeted in McD trade) or Gauthier (if you look at Skjei and Keane for Gauthier and 1st as a singe trade as Edge recently described it?)
You are right. "No way" is too strong especially as I do not proclaim to be an insider. That said, Lemieux is the type of diversification that seems to be being sought by Gorton and Quinn and we know he does not completely lack skill. Do I think that he is "safe"? No. There are only certain ones that are. But I think that as he seems to fit the bill as to what is looked at as far as players that make the team harder to play against, then he has a leg up on the likes of Howden. As for Gauthier, his value will come through if he can start to score more often. Otherwise, he offers less.

If he doesn’t take a step forward this year, he could be exposed. A lot can change in one year
I would say that this is a pretty big year for a bunch of people. Lemieux, Howden & Gauthier are some. Hajek is another. Even a Chytil as far as demonstrating that he has top-6 probability.

Lemieux being a Gorton target means literally nothing

Every player we acquire is a Gorton target
Yes, but he brings the element that is being sought after to diversify the roster. Gauthier does not. No idea of which is the right answer, but there is a specific element that is being looked for. Lemieux fits that bill

So what does that mean? I’m back to my first A and B

A. Maybe we just don’t know if there were similar calls on Howden and Gauthier

B. Teams called Gorton so there’s not much indication of how he feels - maybe he just didn’t like what other teams were offering in return

What am I missing?

Nobody wants Howden.
He's a dime a dozen player which also raises many more questions about DQ's ability to judge players in their development..

On Skjei, I think the Rangers thought he was going to develop into McDonagh's heir. That didn't happen and the Rangers got themselves out from under his contract. Moving Skjei for a draft pick didn't make the Rangers better this season but they were okay with that because they got some cap flexibility this offseason.

And they should learn that lesson or be facing similar problems with Strome and Buchnevich’s contracts.

Yeah he's over the hill at 28 lol

IMO, this place still massively underrates Ryan Strome. Takes two to Tango. So long as Jeff Gorton and the Rangers don't "egregiously" overpay, Strome should be back with this team. 59 points in 70 games, and he would have come extremely close to eclipsing 70 points if the regular season played out until the very end. That kind of production doesn't magically grow on trees. I don't think he is as good as Brayden Schenn per se, but the Rangers lucking into Strome breaking out a bit and really finding his groove reminds me of the Blues taking that chance on Schenn a few seasons ago. It paid off because he was an immensely valuable piece to that top six during their Stanley Cup run last season.

The Rangers lucked into developing Buch, a mid-round pick, into a valuable asset. Buch has good value and will bring back a good return for this organization. Buch, ideally, is the third piece on a good top-six line; a bit of a luxury. The Rangers are still not yet in that "luxury" place, but are fast approaching. Strome has given us just enough of a sample size to prove he could be the second piece with an upper-echelon type of player (Tavares, Panarin), which the Rangers already have and will be adding another one when they select Laf in the Draft at 1; Strome can also shift to RW if need be if Chytil ends up being the real deal, if one of our other prospects develops to that level, or Jeff Gorton acquires another center.

Buch is going to need a raise after this season, like Strome/Tony now. Flip Buch now, get another draft pick or good prospect on the cusp of the NHL. If possible, flip Buch and another asset or two to get a similar-aged middle-six center, preferably one with a solid two-way game and bite to his game who is capable of winning faceoffs (I really want Dvorak), or a similar-aged left-handed defender to strengthen the organization's depth and push one of Staal/Smith out of the everyday lineup for good. The front office smartly realized the mistake with Skjei and his contract, and luckily Carolina gave them a "Get Out of Jail" free card so to speak.

With Strome, we know they can play him with Panarin and he will produce. The coaching staff could keep him at 2C, or shift him to 3C, or 2RW/3RW depending on injuries, lineup balance, etc. I believe with Strome there is more versatility with how Quinn and the front office can deploy forwards. With Buch, you'd be paying him to be that third piece on a line when one the organization's strength is now at that very position (Kakko already with one season of NHL experience and Kravtsov, a top 10 pick two years ago, one of the organization's best overall prospects).

Flipping Buch allows the Rangers to comfortably give Strome the raise he earned, without touching any of the other salary cap space available to them at this moment. That means it makes it easier to find a number to give Tony DeAngelo a bridge contract, or the possibility of bringing back swiss-army knife Jesper Fast on a 2/3-year contract, or possibly even dipping into the RFA/UFA pool a bit harder in search of filling a hole. To me, it's a total no-brainer. I LOVE Buch's game, but this is simply going to be a business decision like Skjei ultimately ended up being.

Buch is gonna be the skill piece that gets traded for middle six grit. Only question is for who and if not a 1 for 1 what the sweetener is.

I think it’s is the Sunday following the paschal full moon date? The paschal full moon date is the ecclesiastical full moon date on or after 21 March. The Gregorian method derives paschal full moon dates by determining the epact for each year. The epact can have a value from * (0 or 30) to 29 days.

Gimme Boone.

Honestly, I don’t think Hanifin is great but I think he’s better than he gets credit for, and he’s younger than DeAngelo, so it’s not like he’s a fully finished product. Based on organizational needs, I’d love something like DeAngelo (more valuable than Hanifin) + Howden (less valuable than Bennett) for Hanifin + Bennett. I’d add Georgiev if need be and take a 3/4th back.

DeAngelo is the most valuable piece but Hanifin Trouba would be a very solid pairing and Bennett at 3C between Laf and Chytil would add something we’re missing. Bennett could also get an opportunity with Panarin, either with Strome on wing and Chytil shifting to 3C or with Kakko on wing and Strome dropping to 3C.

Panarin - Strome - Kakko
Kreider - Zibanejad - Buch
Laf - Bennett- Chytil
Hanifin - Trouba
Lindgren - Fox

Lemmy, Gauthier, Barron, Miller, Lundkvist, etc. in the mix.
