The wing "problem" is a good one to have. Panarin/Laf/Kreider/Lemieux and Buch/Kakko/Gaut/Fast make for legit threats on every line. The bottom six guys can move up if needed without embarrassing themselves, and for the first time since the early fecking 90s, we would have 4th liners on the 4th line rather than the 1st/2nd. I have no idea why so many people are in a mad rush to move Buch or others and mess that up. Center is, admittedly, a bit of an issue, but it is a manageable one. If Chytil can make the jump to 2c this year, we're set. If not, we'll have Chytil at 3c, Howden OR Barron at 4c, and a ton of cap space next summer to address the issue. The team isn't winning the Cup this year anyway. I'd move Strome for the best return, and give Chytil a year-long tryout at 2c while the team also eases in a couple more young bucks on D.

When it comes to Lemieux, it all comes down to the details. What's the return of the potential deal? What's his salary next season. Because when I see so many people quick to include him in a deal, I raise an eyebrow.

A lot of hypothetical deals since the Carolina series trying to bring in playoff, sandpaper types. The team looked different when Lemieux returned for game 3. He brings an element that is unique with this group.

Of course he has faults, he is a bottom 6 skater in a cap league. If he was 100% effective he would have priced himself off the team. We can't upgrade every single position every offseason. You have to have some low salary, role players to offset the Panarin and Trouba level contacts.

This is a big picture opinion for me. If we land effective replacements, great. But they won't be cheaper. Dale Weiss and Mattias Janmark clocked in at around $2.4m last season as an example. I don't think I'm trading Buchnevich away to fit the Lemieux replacement. The Hartford replacement is a gamble on improving at a marginally lower salary.

Again, it depends on the details. But I don't like the way the dominos fall so far.

Buchnevich will not be on the roster opening night. He's history here.

Stand by Dvorak is who Gorton and JD should go after at all costs. I see a Zibanejad type steal in a trade if they can get him from Arizona who like all their offensive prospects is being ruined over there.

Lemieux is going to be entering his third full NHL season. Room to improve. Remember he also may be the sacrificial lamb to Seattle.
He was a Gorton trade target and one that multiple teams inquired about. There is no way he is exposed to Seattle.

Kreider moving to the right side would make a lot of sense as well. Enables Laf an easy entry into the top 6 without things getting convoluted.

A line of Laf - Zib - Kreider is a short term downgrade for a long term major upgrade

Kreider also makes his living around the end boards and in front of the crease, so the main thing he would be losing is his transition passing and being able to take stretch passes going up ice, but I think we all figured that would settle down a bit with age
I think if Buch is traded or Kakko poops the bed, sure although I’m not sure Krieder is a versatile player like Mr Versatility B Smith. I’d really love to see Krieder on the 3rd line with Chytil and presumably a young RW like Krat. They’ll need a steadying influence and his speed can bail them out on outlet mishaps

Panarin, Kreider, Buch, Zib, Chytil.

That leaves 2 spots for Strome, Fast, Lemieux, Gauthier, Howden, Andersson.

Gauthier and Howden were Gorton trade targets as well, and whatever fans on this board may think of Howden, management likes him.

It's possible that both Strome and Fast are gone by then. Buch could be gone as well, and protections become a lot easier. It could also be that we trade for a center who has to be protected. There are too many variables to really say at this point, but I wouldn't assume that if it comes down to it, Lemieux will be protected over Gauthier and Howden.

I think that Fast will be gone by then. Possibly/probably Buchevich as well (but that has to do with DeAngelo's ask). I think that today Lemieux brints something that Gauthier and Howden do not. It will be up to each of them to take meaningful steps forward. Especially Howden.

Yeah I’ll believe it when I see it regarding kakko and/or Lafreniere being on pp unit 1

PP unit 2 would be fine for now.

Chytil doesn't need to be on the PP right now.

Zibanejad, Kreider, Panarin, Buchnevich, DeAngelo

Strome, Lafreniere, Kakko, Trouba, Fox

If ADA or Strome are dealt, put Chytil in.
