You're paying for ages 21-28 for Ehlers - which is a player's prime years.

Would you rather ELC/bridge a guy till 24-25, then pay him big from 25 to 32?

The amount might be a tad bit high for me, but the strategy of locking up young guys is definitely worth it.

As long as they are trending in the right direction...

Otherwise you end up with Detroit

I think Boo is in Hartford because he didn’t beat out DD, which was a tall order. They don’t want him here to be 13F and I think we should take that as evidence they see something in his game worth planning on. I think they also don’t want him here to play out of position. He’ll be here as a 4C or not here at all.
I think he is in Hartford because he showed next to nothing and could not beat out a 29 year old journeyman or a career 4th liner.

Joe Colbourne (if he clears waivers) at 50% retained for Bo Nieves? Would that be of interest? Almost a replacement giant being the similiar size as Byron Boy on the 4th line...

Double shifting MZA already?

Buch with Zib and Kreids.

Looks like they're going with a balanced approach to start.

My big hope for the roster as it currently stands...

1) That AV will substitute Holden for Staal if Marc really struggles.
2) That Desharnais plays well enough to replace Chytil when its time to return to Europe.
3) That if Vesey stays on the 4th line he will be able to get minutes either on the PP or PK for his development. Nash and Kreider are unlikely to be demoted to the 4th for any reason so the only guy he's ever likely to replace is Grabner.

Paul Carey has history playing centre, so if DD gets promoted eventually a 4th line of Vesey-Carey-Fast isn't out of the question.

That’s not what AV said, but I’m sure you have a better grasp on the matter

Speaking of, who is who in this situation? Neither Desharnais nor Carey is a career 4th liner. Desharnais was putting up 50 points a few seasons ago. Carey is a journeyman, but that’s what most 13Fs are.

Can Winnipeg wait until the player completes his ELC before giving him 7 years? What's the rush? Edmonton was in the same huge hurry to reward Hall,RNH and Eberle when the team sucked. Everyone got paid. There's no incentive for the player. He already got paid. Play out the year. If Buchnevich has a huge year,he will be in line for the same 6/7 years for $42M. He will have one more season left on his ELC. Do it again and then we'll pay you.

Bingo. Again, Nieves isn't some fresh out of the CHL kid who still has a lot of developing to do, he played 4 years of college hockey and even though we can use injuries as an excuse, he still has to show something real fast or I think he has to be considered a bust as a NHLer. By the time they're done with college, these guys should at least be showing us a glimpse that they're NHL material and can either make the jump or just need a bit more time in the AHL. I'm not saying their game is 100% fully developed, but again they aren't kids still learning the ropes at that point.

So far we've seen that he's pretty fast and big but not a lot else.

While I agree on most teams waiting for at least the entry level to run out before going bonkers, I do also wonder if certain markets feel that if they wait even a year, perhaps the player may get some ideas about not wanting to be there long term.

Boo didn't do enough to earn a spot, it's as simple as that.

Hopefully he can have a good start in Hartford and we'll see him up with the big club at some point.
Not saying he was robbed, but he was one of the last cuts and it is a tall order for a college kid to unseat a former 50 point veteran.

Nieves isn't really all that great so it's not an issue at all he didn't make the team

He has size, and okay speed. He isn't much good at anything else

He is what he is at this point

Filip Chytil spent the Rangers trip to Lake Placid with line mate Rick Nash as his roommate. (NY Post)
Nash said that he spent the trip to Lake Placid "showing him the ropes" and said that Chytil has a "mature" and"complete game." (NY Post)

Pretty cool that Nash stepped up and has taken Chytil under his wing. Nash entered the league as an 18 year old as well so he can offer a lot.

Agreed, this is such a bad approach. Might not be Ehlers, but one of these deals is going to see the player have a serious down season after signing but before the new contract kicks in and it will kick their team in the teeth.

It's not even like they're getting deals with signing these guys a year ahead of time. Would Ehlers really call for that much more if he played another season? I don't see how.
