I think it would send a worse message to show zero loyalty to a guy who was a pretty solid defenseman for us before some pretty serious injuries , shutting down Ovechkin on a nightly basis , plus his OT goal against the Caps , after Richards tied it with 6 secs left , one of the most exciting games I've seen in recent memories, can't just s**t on the guy . Give him limited minutes , and just by him out at seasons end , no reason to add insult to injury , no pun intended
you realize that stuff happened FIVE years ago, right? How long are we going to live in the past? Staal will be walking away with millions of dollars that he will never have had to actually earn... Sather gift wrapped him a contract. it's not up to staal to say no, so yes, I'm pissed at management for this too, but there are ways around this Staal situation that have not been executed and that I am salty about.
As SF has said, hockey is the only sport where intangibles have such a high value that is factored into players worth, and it pisses me off when these guys become detriments on ice and yet they are still rewarded.
AV made a big deal about younger guys stepping up and taking leadership. I assume they want to walk Staal out on a nice note, so they'll wait till next year and buy him out, but that's looking more and more like a stupid decisions... I can't even use the "hindsight is 20/20" excuse, or even the "there was nobody to replace him here! Too many unknowns with the prospects!" excuse here because it was *Holden who carried Staal last year*, not the other way around. Holden is absolutely serviceable as a 6D, and he'll fit just fine next to ADA, but no, we have to tip toe around Staal and his NMC, because we're concerned about a buyout cap hit 8 years from now? Apparently management thought it'd be a great idea to wait an extra year even with Holden here so that we could lop off 1 year of buyout salary... Think about that....
One year of a $1.355M cap penalty in 2023-24... And now I'm sure you're saying "NO ITS TWO YEARS LESS BUYOUT HIT!"...
No, it's not, because guess what, Staal's cap hit is still here, isn't it? There goes that 2nd year of "the buyout"
Sorry, I am particularly salty about Staal being on this team today.
