The players go from entry level to huge ass contracts after two years. Teams don't even wait for the player to complete the ELC.

They don’t want to get burned by a bridge deal. If you have that talent, you need to keep them locked up long-term. We’re going to do the same thing with Skjei.

A trend I'm noticing...

High end premier players are getting paid much more now, while

Lower end roster depth players are getting paid substantially less, if at all.

Is this a natural supply/demand issue? Will the player's association feel positive or negative about the somewhat top-heavy condition of player paychecks?

Seems like a topic for the next CBA negotiation. Teams are paying full price to keep the premier players on board and happy, while older, or less consistent players get contracts like Grabner. I imagine some of it has to do with a negative history of mediocre players getting ridiculous contracts (Finger, Callahan, Hainsey), and a hesitancy to do that again.

When the top teams have 3-4 players eating half of the salary cap, it makes for an interesting conversation. It's like MLS with the designated players.

Avalanche is a terrible team @tbassler - they are rebuilding. I`m just saying 118 NHL games 18 pts. is a lot better and more experience compare to 2 ****ing pts. and 32 total NHL like Paul Carey games and he is 2 years older.

That`s my arguement, but forget about Martinsen - my other point he is wasting Boo Nieves and guys in Wolfpack time who have higher skill ceiling and draft pick.

My like was based on this point.
Hopefully the POS that is hanging on our roster gets suspended, and Boo is called up.

Trading a 1st for Athanasiou would be piss poor asset management. I’d even hesitate to deal a 2nd, but can be possibly convinced. He reminds me of Hagelin a lot. A 3rd round pick for a 2nd-3rd line tweener is fair. And for a guy who is still not signed. I know people like to drool over speed here but don’t let that cloud reasoning.

I think Boo is in Hartford because he didn’t beat out DD, which was a tall order. They don’t want him here to be 13F and I think we should take that as evidence they see something in his game worth planning on. I think they also don’t want him here to play out of position. He’ll be here as a 4C or not here at all.

I probably overeacted, but use words like terrible on x NHL players is wrong even on a 4th line, and same goes to the Avalanche team - they are in a rebuild process and most are aware of that - not that Nucks is any better at the moment. All NHL teams need 4th line players, and all players have different skillset - some with higher ceiling than others hence the NHL draft system.

theres a reason to that madness. act a year early and save some money on the AAV. get them wrapped up for an affordable number long term. overall, makes sense for both sides.

if you wait and do a bridge deal and that player booms, its gonna be painful to get the long term deal done.

Yes, I agree, he had 1 season above 60 pts. - Jets better hope he continue to produce for that contract value.

These contracts are insane.

These contracts tend to backfire more than they work out. And, if you manage your team properly, there's no issue with bridging. Players that truly deserve to get paid eventually do, and you tend not to have as many bloated contracts.

It's no coincidence that poorly run teams tend to give these contracts out. Ehlers is going to be 29 when this contract expires, so WPG is not even getting all his prime years by signing this deal. Sure, it's great if he continues to pan out, but it still seems like the team is taking a disproportionate amount of the risk.

Ehlers is close to the Draisaitl/Nylander tier. Totally worth that contract. I'd give the same from the Rangers POV.

No Desjardins due to suspension of course. But I think this is what the team looks like:

Kreider-Zib-Buch
Nash-Chytil-Zucc
Grabner-Hayes-Miller
Vesey-DD-Carey

McD-KS
BS-BS
Ginger-Holden
ADA, Kampfer

Lundqvist
Pavelec

You're paying for ages 21-28 for Ehlers - which is a player's prime years.

Would you rather ELC/bridge a guy till 24-25, then pay him big from 25 to 32?

The amount might be a tad bit high for me, but the strategy of locking up young guys is definitely worth it.

Is it better to risk and overpay even before the entry level is over, or better to risk the player wants out and refuses to sell many, if any UFA years after a bridge deal? Depends on the player but ROR for example seemingly wanted out, rightfully so it seems, would the Avalanche been able to convince him to stay had they offered him something long term and expensive before his entry level was even over? Ryan Johansen with Columbus?

All reports out of practices have had the 3rd pair as Staal-DeAngelo, even Brooks said in his preview article that's how they'll most likely start.

Ehlers is a first line winger and that’s what First line wingers go for

Bridging isn’t the ideal option when you have a player like that

It's not about the future. It's about this year. If he sticks with the Rangers and does well, great. If he gets sent down at some point, he's a great player to have in the AHL, both because he can be called up in a pinch and because he's a good AHL player and will help the kids win.

Who are we giving that contract to if not him? Some prospect with limited upside? We've got enough of those already. We need good AHL veterans so that Hartford isn't the dumpster fire it was last year. As a 13th or 14th forward in the NHL, he's good because no one cares if he sits for 10 games at a time. Players like Gropp, Nieves, etc. need to be in the AHL playing big minutes. They aren't going to get that in the NHL.

Don't get hung up on what the roster looks like on day 1. The roster will no doubt be different by the end of the season. Paul Carey will either prove he belongs in the NHL, or he will prove he's nothing more than a very good AHL player and that's where he will be playing.

The thing that scares most people is that we've read this story with Glass for 3 years, Girardi for 5 years, and Staal THIS year...

If these guys aren't NHL players they shouldn't play, but that hasn't stopped the coach or management from playing these guys
