“A big part of leadership is the power to influence, in my mind, anyway,” the coach said. “Chris Kreider is one of the best-conditioned athletes I’ve ever been associated with, so the way he works out and the way he prepares himself physically, he should be able to influence other guys to do the same thing.

“Now he’s more experienced, he knows the pressure of the games, of the season and of the playoffs. He has to share that experience with his younger teammates. And like I’ve said, there are no excuses. It’s those guys’ [Kreider, J.T. Miller, Kevin Hayes] time to take a bigger role in our dressing room.”

Why no letter on their sweaters?

So he should have a letter because he works out hard and makes other guys want to work out hard?

Kreider needs to lead ON THE ICE. He hasn't yet - outside of the last game of the season in the playoffs vs. Ottawa where he finally seemed to put it all together - albeit it too little, too late.

Zooks leads by example every single game - smallest guy out there with the biggest effort and will stand up to anyone for his teammates. No question he deserves an "A" over anyone else on the team.

Personally, I don't think Kreider or Miller have earned that letter yet. I hope one of them does this year. Maybe that's what they're saving that 4th "A" for - an incentive for someone to go out there and get it.

If any of you remember Brent Thompson, a Wolfpack D from 97-99, his son Tage, a 2016 1st rdr, is making his NHL debut tonight with the Blues.

That Thompson??

Thompson is such a common name that I wouldn't have even thought of it.

You don't need to have a letter on your sweater to be a leader in the locker room. AV wasn't necessarily implying that the young guys would be getting letters. Said Smith would also be looked at for leadership on the team.

Now, that being said...hell yeah Zucchini!

Why is Zucc getting a letter even being disputed? Comical is an understatement.

It's not being disputed. RB thought Kreider deserved one, but didn't say Zuuc didn't. PB is kind of neutral. That's all. I think everyone understands why Zuuc got the letter, and the vast majority are ecstatic.

Kreider already pressures himself and struggles with confidence.

A letter is not right for him at this time. Maybe later.

Zuccarello is an absolute slam-dunk pick. If anything ever happened to McDonagh, Zuccarello is captain of this team. No contest.

No, pretty sure we would trade for Dan Girardi and give him the C

McD is the Captain, Nash has been a leader on this team for years, Staal was an alternate already, you don't just take alternates away, it's bad policy. Zucc has deserved the A for a long time through actual on ice example.

I get that you're a walking hockey wiki, but are you genuinely advocating that those 3 should have letters over the others? I don't understand why that is.

I agree. None of those 3 have proven to be a leader. Wearing a letter isn't based on what you do on the ice (Not that that makes a difference for Hayes). Drury might have been horrible on the ice but he was a better captain and leader than Brian Leetch.

Better player != Better leader

If I would take the A away from Staal it is because I want the team to go back to 2 alternates, not to give it to someone else. McDonagh, Nash and Zuccarello wearing letters makes sense. I would pick Smith, Fast, Shattenkirk or even Grabner over Kreider, Miller and Hayes when it comes to being an A

Only so many letters to go around. There are also a lot of great leaders who never wore a C or an A on their jersey.

It's a significant honor and Zucc is about as deserving as you're ever going to find.

I agree that he deserves it, but I still feel having more than 2 As is a bit much. This all goes back to St Louis getting an A the full season he was here and we had the home and away alternate captains solution. Girardi and Staal weren't going to lose their letter.

McDonagh deserves the letter for certain, and he is the best option for the Club as Captain.

Zucc I am super proud to see get an "A". Well deserved.

Zbad has been fun so far, but is he a leader?
Nash has disappeared as much as anyone. He to me never stood out in a leadership role.
Smith showed some leadership, but he's still very new to the NYR. If he plays like he did in the playoffs I wouldn't be disappointed if he wore a letter. But not my first choice.
Shatty is brand new.
Staal has a foot out the door.
Hayes could have consideration.
Maybe Miller too, but that playoff disappearance?
Skjei is a sophomore.

For the 3rd "A" I cant think of a player that deserves it more then Kreider at this point. Yeah, he has some games where he didn't play like the animal that he is. But...he sticks up for himself and his players. He's big, physical. He's a presence. I just don't see anyone else currently that should wear the other "A".

Didn't Larmer, Graves, Leetch and Lowe all wear letters in 93-94/94-95?

My memory is a little foggy.
