Trading for Duchene will still take a decently sized package around Hayes. Salary consideration too.

Also, Duchene's next contract is going to be...wew.

I don't see him getting much more than the $6 million he already gets.

I think they are after MacKinnon not Duchene

That would be a hell of a ballsy trade to make. I shudder about the cost though. Would Gorton go balls to the wall and make Skjei available? Tough call.

Serious question:

What will Hayes' next contract be? $3.75-$4.25m is my guess. Probably looking at 4-5 year term? That's a guess and a lot of that depends on how he plays this season.

Duchene' next contract will be what? For arguments sake, let's say $6.5-$7.0m for 6 years. Is Duchene worth the extra $2-3m? Could the Rangers know if he would be willing to sign in NY? Is Duchene a sure-fire center?

Carl Soderberg is Colorado's bad contract. One less year left than Staal. That team has forwards coming or playing now.

Staal has started the season very well. Colorado needs a defenseman. If Staal continues to play well, his value may actually be greater than Soderberg.

Colorado may not be looking for futures in return for Duchene. It sounds like Colorado had locker room issues last season that have been corrected. The have added a few nice, speedy, young forwards. Healthy Johnson and Varlamov.

Hayes + Staal + ______ for Duchene + Soderberg

The Rangers have Miller, Hayes, and Skjei due for large raises this year. Vesey is due for a raise this summer as well. McDonagh's bargain contract is up after next season. There's no way they will be able to keep all of those players.

Ask Colorado if this does it:
Kreider/Miller + Andersson/Chytil + 1st for MacKinnon

edit: I just went full Bern....damn I should never go full Bern

I’d feel a lot better about Zibanejad Duchene Miller down the middle with the two kids a couple years away than I do with Hayes who I’m just not a fan of never really have been.

Does that solve the depth problem? Not really but a winger is easy to find at the deadline.

I think if they add Duchene it's more of a long term addition. His versatility and ability to play either wing or center would be useful with Andersson and Chytil on the way and Zibanejad in NY.

The major question is would he re-sign and what is he looking for.

No thanks, let some other team pay the premium for Duchene

Jost I would 100% be in on, no chance he is moved though

Not in a million years, that trade is crapola in my opinion

4 years isn't a long term contract and it's not a full NTC.

Smith is a little over a year older than Stepan, is more likely to decline with his style of play, and isn't half the player Stepan is. Yet, both have a clause for 4 years. The clause in Smith's contract is as much a burden as Stepan's was

Why exactly is MacKinnon worth that package?

You didn't go full bern.

Going full bern is something along the lines of this:

Nash (50% retained) + Shattenkirk (50% retained) + Desharnais + Smith (50% retained) + 3 2nd rounders

for

Reinhart + Kane + Ristolainen + 3 3rd rounders

Then flip Ristolainen + Zuccarello + 1st

for

MacKinnon

Finally,

McDonagh + 2029 1st rounder

for

Heiskanen + 3 4th rounders

Go with this:
Kreider-MacKinnon-Zibanejad
Kane-Nieves-Miller
Vesey-Reinhart-Buchnevich
Chytil-Lettieri-Andersson (Because they have chemistry)

Skjei-Heiskanen
DeAngelo-Pionk
Pedrie-Graves

we're not getting Duchene. And we're definitely not getting MacKinnon. And we're super definitely not finding a team willing to take Staal.

Mackinnon is in no way worth that much. Not even close.

Duchene is such an interesting case.

His overall value really depends on whether you think Duchene is more of the 2011,2013,2014 version of himself, or more of the 2015,2016,2017 version.

Version A looks more like a 30 goal, 80 point center, Version B looks more like a 20-25 goal, 60 point center.

I'm just not sure that Duchene is the kind of player who comes in and elevates those around him. I think he's a player, who in the right situation, meshes well with an established core and potentially develops some good chemistry.

But it seems to be that Colorado is waiting for someone to bite on the former and not the latter.

duchene would look pretty sweet slotted between mika and hayes. he's still got game and wheels. anyone who says he wouldn't be a good add doesnt watch him when hes going. cost is prohibitive though.

sakic overplayed his hand and now its a shit show in colo. however, they are winning and that makes things seem better.

No denying he is a very good player. The question for me comes down to how good and at what cost?

Everything is tied into the cost. It really depends on what Colorado wants back and our long-term salary structure.

Even more so, as Smith will never be a 1C and is struggling in a top-4 D assignment.

I heard a podcast last with Pierre LeBrun and Craig Custance. LeBrun said some teams believe wing is Duchene’s best position. Not center.

realistically, the offer that makes the most sense to me would be jimmy vesey and neal pionk for matt duchene. duchene can play the 2C with miller on his wing or he can play on the edge with miller as his pivot.

ck mika buch
miller duchene zucc
nash hayes grabs
