Great post. I never liked in amateur hockey when goalies made excuses so I love that Benny wants them thinking about making every save no matter what. With that said as a shooter I loved goalies that stay back in the net because it made me feel like I had a lot more net to shoot at in general. I prefer my goalies to stay aggressive and challenge shooters but Benny's record speaks for itself.

I've noticed AV tries to match opposite type defenders together. So offsetting a puck mover with a more traditional defender.

Which would leave you with the types of pairs announced today.

For me, it's gotta be McD/Shatty/Smith/Skjei top 4 in whatever order. Bottom pair can be argued for me.

Detroit will be rebuilding for quite some time. They will try to amass drift picks for sure. Bo is our 1C. Should suffice... ;)

Style wise if you want Shatty to be with a more stay at home defensemen so I could see Staal being used on his pairing. I'm not saying that would be a good pair though. I'm just looking at the styles of play. Basically whoever plays with Shatty is going to have less chances to go up ice because that D will want to be able to get back with Shatty up ice. When Brady is paired with Shatty Brady will have to take a more defensive mindset.
 
If AV really wants to pair Shattenkirk with a more defensive guy, why not go Smith-Shattenkirk?! Both McDonagh and Skjei can play the right side, pair them together, issue solved...

I don't think this would be the best options, but it's clearly a better option then having Staal or Holden in the top 4.

Gorton should move Holden when he had the chance earlier - oh well. :)
Maybe Holden have trained very well - so hard to speculate on it.

Speaking of Pavelec. When is he starting his first game or is the plan to play Lundqvist in every game until he passes out from exhaustion? At Columbus on Friday. Devils on Saturday at the Garden. Saturday starts a six game homestand. Devils. Pittsburgh. Islanders. Nashville. San Jose. Arizona with Stepan. @ Montreal. Vegas @Home on Halloween. October. 13 games. 10 home/3 away.

Hank will be fine. I think the idea of him getting burnt out is over hyped.

Just had 2 days off. I'd play Pavelec Saturday if we win tomorrow. Maybe play him Saturday no matter what.

Then again vs SJ or Zona.

You're welcome! All of the thread titles I have done have been plays off of Frank Sinatra songs and tried to make them as relevant as possible. This one was Can't Take That Away From Me. I Get A Hit (Kick) Out Of You will definitely be next!

Agreed, AV is scrambling because of the poor start but he also set these guys up to fail by not preparing the team for the start of the season and then mixing stuff around because he's trying get the team stabilized. It's more likely that players are just starting to settle in rather than his lineup changes doing anything drastic. Maybe once the team finally settles down and finds itself he'll give things another shot but it is frustrating. I still contend the forwards were a far bigger problem than the D pairings.

Also, if Staal can actually somehow be an effective player then fantastic, I'm all for that happening. I dont' believe it'll happen but if it somehow does then I'm not going to complain. If he can play like a top 4 guy then play him like a top 4 guy. I just don't have faith that he can last very long in that role.

I'm not confident in Staal being a top pairing or 2nd pairing defenseman either for the whole season, but right now he's playing as well as he has since 13-14, obviously it's been 4 games but I don't understand what AV is thinking with these changes. Staal and McDonagh have played well together, Holden should not be on the top pairing. It just seems like he is panicking already which is not a good look this early in the season.
 
Staal-Shattenkirk was literally a meme on here for the entirety of last year. AV is jumping the shark riding on the back of the shark he jumped a long time ago when he started Glass with Hayes and Zucc.

Yeah, the seemingly panicked decisions is not a good look. My guess would be that he thinks Shattenkirk sucks defensively and is trying to find the right way to cover that. Rightly or wrongly. I didn't see much of the St Louis game other than the 1st period.

Skjei and Smith have struggled, Staal has played pretty well, I'm OK with letting S&S find their game with more limited minutes for now if other players are playing well.

Holden McDonagh seems to be a result of "well who else are we going to play with McDonagh" which continues to be a dumb idea
 
Even if you start with a premise that Staal is a good defensive cover for Shattenkirk for a short period while other defensemen get themselves to play better, it does not justify just as unimpressive Holden with our best D in McD on a 1st pair.

The only explanation that makes even an iota of sense (even though it is completely outrageous) is that AV is not getting along with Gorton and purposely trying to get fired. :huh:

I wonder if Gorton would consider moving Tony DeAngelo for Atanashio?

I like TDA and we have been looking for the PMD RHD forever— but otoh with Pionk’s camp and Shatty on board there are some openings.

I personally have bit of a hard time gauging AAs potential. He is still pretty young. But what type of player can he become? A Russ Courtnall type? Does he have more potential?
