They didn't contribute to the win, they were completely out matched and a liability out there, Hank completely saved them.
So if accountability is a thing then Holden and Kampfer should be out even if we beat Habs.
Yup, that's where I'm at too. The only thing they contributed towards the shutout was being in the lineup. Are we judging their performance based on the performance or just the end result?

They both got caved in and looked bad and Holden had some horrible turnovers. Based on performance, neither of them deserve to play again.

Nah, it's just offda as usual calling Nash invisible while ignoring reality. For someone who's been completely invisible, it's weird how he leads our team in ixGF, scoring chances for, and high-danger corsi for. Invisible, things and stuff, muffins, etc.

If Nash continues to play like this, I am sure the pucks will start to go in for him. I got to watch only last game but I was very happy with his performance, not just getting scoring opportunities, but also with his overall game

I support AV but man.. Smith has 1 bad game and rides the pine for 2 while Girardi survived all season last year.

You can bet that there is more to it than one game. I for example posted during pre-season on how it looked like Smith skated sluggish. I think he has played gritty which is nice to see — but how well did he prepare this off season after getting that long term contract?

As AV said they weren’t perfect but they worked hard and competed and were part of a 2-0 shutout which is a lot better than what smith has done to this point.

Or the puck will continue not to go in for him, as has been the case over quite a while now. Nash is what he is at this point. A solid two way forward, who would be a good 2nd/3rd line tweener. But in no way worth his salary cap hit.

With this kind of roster turn over I think it may take a little while for the group to get acclimated. I missed the Col game but TO was rough to watch. I'll give them another 10 games or so before hitting panic button. Wonder if Smith is dealing with an injury or something off ice?

Or maybe he got paid his money and now is coasting? We've seen things like this before. Certainly hope not, but it is a possibility.

Sure, the team could find time to gell, but man oh man, the more things change the more they remain the same. Goalie hung out to dry, lack of desire to get nose dirty, etc....

Am i the only one who actually think we should have kept Stepan and not re-signed Smith? Would have been a better option imo and we could have afforded it now and longterm.

That is a interesting question. No way for me to say because I do not know how much the team wanted to trade Stepan and how much they wanted the #7 pick. I do believe the team hoped to trade #7 up for a top 3-5 pick.

So renting Thornton for a year at pro-rated 8m is a disaster, but trading for Darren HELM at 4m per year until 2021 is the path forward?
Yes, because including but not limited to Thornton is too slow, does not ft, is too expensive, denies young talent opportunity, and Helm at 3.8 is overpriced, but in the full deal I posted we upgrade a 4th to a likely high 2nd in a weak draft, and he is an immediate upgrade on DD, and we are not married to the guy all 4 years. Holden not moving so fast. Need to remove LD clutter. Do that. By end of this year or next we can move him at relatively low cost.

Don't try to reason with madness.
One man's ceiling is another man's floor. What you call madness, others might call ..... and that's enough for now. Professor has to finish his taxes.

Darren Helm is an overpriced role player with a bad back.
Agreed, and in a vacuum I too vote no. But this is not a vacuum. It is means to buy pick upgrade, dump DD who will have nothing in the tank by end of year, and move 2 pieces of deadwood for one lesser piece who can be moved later.

AV needs to be fired.
On this, we agree.

I don't know if you are the only one, but Stepan had to go, esp with a pending NMC/NTC kicking in; plus he's overrated. Good yes, spectacular, never. He was always considered by some as more than he was, and we were always better off with what he brought in trade than actual production. Pity he was not moved til recently.
Smith, the prob there is we invested a 2nd + a 3rd to get him, and we did not sign him -- which became necessary at any kind of a reasonable # --- we would have pissed those picks away.

So he cost that as a rental.
At decent term we should be able to recover our investment and slightly more at some point. He will get back into form soon enough and some team will have an injury.
But again, the stupid win now move comes back to bite in the ass.

How is Stepan overrated? Considered around 30th best center in the NHL by most people. Fantastic 5v5 goals against on ice numbers and scored 60ish points every year. He is the definition of a shutdown center when you look at his numbers and how he managed to limit other teams top players from scoring alot when he was on the ice 5v5.

If Staal is a lock on the 1st pairing then that Smith contract is going to be a disaster. That's why you don't pay big money to a guy who the coach didn't even have faith in to put in the top-4 during the playoffs.

Yeah that's why I'm waiting to hit the panic button. It's a long hockey season... I'm really hopeful that ADA sticks and Smith turns his sheet around. Time will tell

Ola, I really think Smith didn't train hard enough this offseason. In his summer visit with Amanda Borges he mentioned he had about 8 weddings including his own which was in DC from pictures. He clearly said weddings almost every weekend. Yes most guy don't train 7 days a week unless your name is Kreider or Crosby, but that's a lot of time traveling, not recovering properly, and being in situations where diets kind of go out the window (any wedding I've ever been too has been more about the food than the liquor). Not saying he can't follow it, but do you really see him asking for quinoa and grilled chicken at every one of these?

Coming to camp out of shape is looked at as very insulting in any league especially the NHL. This isn't the 70s/80s when guys would spend all summer drinking beer and fishing. Rangers have had too defensemen since the league restarted in 05-06 come to camp badly out of shape and neither really recovered (Kaspar in 06-07, and Sangs in 09-10).

I'm not going to freak out 4 games into the season, but I'm annoyed we're not icing our best team.

Trade Holden. Demote Carey and DeAngelo. Call up Chytil, Lettieri, and Pionk. Cracknell sits as the 13th forward, Kampfer as the 7th D.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Nash-Chytil-Zucc (for crying out loud, give the kid a chance to actually play before you sit him)
Vesey-Hayes-Miller
Grabner-Desharnais-Lettieri

McD-Smith
Skjei-Shattenkirk
Staal-Pionk

I agree with this, but ADA still deserves that 3RD spot and please give the kid some damn PP time.

I am OK with showcasing Holden a limited amount of time (some team Will get injuries on D and pony up)
IF We want to see Any kind of return here - he needs to see some regular ice
He does not suck that much
Kampfer should only play if we have multiple injuries
I think Smith is injured
IF not, he looks like he came unprepared after signing his Big deal
Which would be a real bad thing

Maybe move Zucc for Nazem kadri. He has 4 pts this year and he can play center for us. And it seems that leafs need that RW too. (too many LW)
They have similar value contract and salary as well. It cost Rangers 200k in value, but we all know that Zucc is worth more than 4.3 mil $.

But I`m not sure if Leafs have the center depth to do such a move to compete for that Stanley cup.

They have too many LW, yes Kadri started the season very well - maybe a good move for us.
I`ve it as a speculation topic- I can go and talk with Leaf fans about it to get a proper depth analysis.

Kadri is a C, why does their abundance of LWs matter at all?!
