This is going to be a tough year to watch if pre-season and game 1 are trends.
They will need to put Shatty outside a shutdown role, and hope that Smith (whose character I love, but smarts I don't) can rekindle something with McD from their college days as the shutdown pair. Otherwise it is going to be a very long year filled with poor structure and mistakes.
Foward group wise... I think they are low on depth... but that's okay if you can fill the slots properly... IE AV getting off of his stubborn stupor and playing Miller in the middle in a shutdown capacity. Let him have 10 games to adjust.
The approach is way too theoretical on paper, and not actionable on the ice imo... and the brass will need to address in the next two weeks before the season slips away by Thanksgiving.
If Chytiljuice isn't going to play, send him down.... put Miller in the middle. Get a winger and depth center.
They need glue guys that can hold things together. This team doesn't have that at the moment. And the PK has declined 3 years straight.
Anyway I'm also for the change to Zone-D with this group. Trading chances will not do good for this squad. The skill level isn't there, the RH shots for the attack off the rush, and off cycle one-tees are not there.
I just watched a DVRed game of EDM, and clips of the other contenders. Rangers are in the bottom half of the league unless they can make some adjustments quickly.
CLB is ready to take the next step... especially if PLD and Jones have greater impacts. McJesus looks like he's toying with guys out there... really fun to watch.. I suggest some you check out some Oiler games.
