Young players look up to the veterans on the team. They try to emulate the way they play. The problem is that our top players care more about having a good time, than about actually playing the right way. The whole "Happy to be here" attitude has been an issue on this team for years. And having a coach for the last 2 years who doesn't address it, just amplified that even more.

Laviolette has the chance to make a difference with this team but it requires some unpopular decisions both in the eyes of fans and the players.

I have seen this for years also. Kreider, Zibanejad, Panarin. All seem to just brush it off and turn the other cheek on the regular. It's actually why someone like Trouba, who plays with emotion all the time and Trochek are such breaths of fresh air.

I'm confident Drury sees the issue too because they made Trouba captain and acquiring Trochek to begin with.

In saying that, it needs to continue.

Well said. No one wants to drive hard to the net when half your teammates go for a change while the other team jumps you. Thats the disconnect between the core players and the way they should be playing.

Getting Chytil back would be huge, getting Shesterkin rolling is massive. I still think we need another dman instead of Jones for injuries, other than that just maybe add a complimentary piece if its cheap and roll it out.

The only guy on the leadership group with that type of instinct is Trouba.

I'd argue that Trochek is also that type of player

Trouba (hasnt been great in that regard this year though imo), Trocheck and Kreider(whenever he is playing on a line without Meeka). Its not enough. I guess you can add Goodrow but he is so bad it hardly matters. I want Lafreniere and Cuylle to be empowered more, but its probably going to take another early exit before you see any reference to a change in leadership or attitude unfortunately.

Trouba runs someone over every night atleast. I mean its kinda why i feel we need Othmann, Sykora and Berard in the lineup before we are successful, all play with a style and tenacity thats missing on this team. Those guys as finished products would push this group over the top.

I like the big hits from Trouba but I want to see them protect their own net better. Other teams can do whatever they want in the blue paint because our defenseman largely dont make them move.

Sometimes, in this day and age, it's better to allow that player there and front him to block the shot than it is to engage and create a double screen. Every team does it.

I don't think the team need some identity overhaul when it comes to toughness. However, I do think the team can benefit from having some more feisty, skilled players. You don't need bone crushing hits. You don't tough guys who can throw down after a scrum. Players who can rid off other players into the boards for puck separation, essentially killing plays before they start, well that would go a long way compared to our current backchecking where we just try to reach the puck.

Rangers are either caught with the play going behind them or they're having breakfast with the goalie in the crease, allowing players to just walk in and shoot. I think we need to fix that before addressing additions because it doesn't seem like we're removing Bonino or Goodrow from the team this year.

Feisty skill players who are actually good, are supremely expensive.

Does anyone think NYR should try and go the TB route? By that I mean maybe slightly overpay for a player that is signed for another year? I think a player like Sharabgovic would fit NYR really well. He can play all 3 position in a pinch, has only 3.1 mil cap hit which they should be able to fit with the cap increase & and I'm not sure if he and/or Cal see him as a long term fixture. Other players who I think could be had for relatively cheap that can maybe upgrade the 4th line/13F is Pezzeta from MTL, Sturm from SJS. Also what are peoples thoughts on Duhaime from the Wild? Would prob be a rental but think a 4th line with Vesey & Duhaime could be fun to watch.

Yes to a slight overpay for a cheap effective player with term. I did not think much of Sharangovich as a Devil but hes been good in Calgary from what ive seen and thats an interesting idea. Would love to stick it to Jersey too.

This isn't entirely accurate though. If they hit UFA, they can be, yes, but if you're looking for a complimentary piece, say a guy who scores 40-50 points but plays a heavier game, they can be somewhat reasonable. Just looking ahead to this upcoming offseason:

Perron
Bertuzzi
Debrusk
Mantha
Marchessault

Then there are some bottom-6 options like:
Trenin
Perry
Carrier
Lorentz
Lomberg
Lafferty
Aube-Kubel

And this doesn't include guys who may be available via trade like Garland or Gourde off the top of my head. I'm sure there will be others.

Assuming no trades, we have 5 picks for the 2024 draft. I'd like to see them grab a couple of defensemen without reaching. With the way we're playing I honestly have no idea what pick we're going to get. I'm assuming 1st round exit (Don't call me negative. I hope I'm wrong but this team has too many flaws).

Sam Dickinson, Buium, Adam Jiricek, Zayne Parekh- Unless we have a comical stretch. I don't see these players dropping to us.

Aron Kiviharju - There's skating concern. But this is a potential Fox steal if everything goes right. If we can move up our 2nd round pick with him falling out of the first, that could be a big win, despite the skating.
Artyom Levshunov - Has mass to him but doesn't seem as physical as he should be when others engage. This feels like a player Drury would like based on looking at him, physically. I haven't seen a lot of Michagan state games lately, but he seems to pinch a lot like Miller did. He doesn't have the skating to recover. Earlier in the season I would have ranked him lower, but scouts are pushing him to the top along with Silayev. So we can probably forget about those 2.
Anton Silayev - is interesting. Enormous player and one that feels like a Drury/Sather edition. But I'd feel more comfortable with this selection if I knew how our puck movers would be in 5 years. Kinda' moot after he's been ranked so high.
Henrey Mews - I think it would be tough selecting Mews with some of the forwards available around that spot. The 2 defensemen above him are more intriguing in the "if things go right" scenario. It seems scouts have him all over the place with rankings.
Danill Ustinkov - Great skater. If falling into the late second/early 3rd round, could be a good pickup if we can slightly move up.
Matvei Shuravin, Alfons Freij - also a decent grab if they fall.
Ej Emery - Screams a Drury pick.
Tomas Galvas - I like his game. I don't like that weighs as much as a notebook. But might be worth a shot depends how far he falls. (if he falls)
Carter Yakemchuk - I don't like taking players who aren't very good at moving their feet while not having a really high ceiling. Great hands though.

I'm sure I left people off. The other obvious position is Center. If we're keeping all 5 picks. I'd like to try and grab 2 of each position, if possible.

They don't have to be extremely good. They just have to be used in the right spot. There's nothing wrong with a bottom 6 who's skilled and feisty, playing bottom 6. By skilled, I mean not Bonino... I don't mean Hagel, where you're paying for top 6.

Laviolette is saving his gun powder for late spring. Then he will get bat crazy on the players including trade deadline acquisitions. Then lets see the results. Its the only strategy short term. Keep the picks trade Jones, Robinson etc for depth. Then the window is 2 yrs. It all depends on Dolan. He likes money. The run 2 yrs ago brought in close to 25 million into his coffers. Average take per home playoff game is 8 million in gross sales. We love the sport BUT remember the answer to 8 out of 10 questions is money. Dolan likes the Knicks more than our beloved Rangers. But he loves money above all else. Drury knows this and it affects how you build a team.

California Golden Seals vs. New York Rangers Box Score: November 17, 1974

My first hockey game as a 14 yr old and I was hooked. Now as STH I am for the first time getting bored with regular season play. Hope this is not a terminal issue with my beloved Rangers

Nothing has really changed with the Rangers this season. People refer to the Florida Panthers from last season. The Panthers have Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett. Those two players are tough to play against. They gave teams so many issues in the playoffs last season. I saw the Panthers last night against Nashville. Tkachuk and Bennett played their big and heavy game. The Rangers have the same team. Chris Drury has no money to make any significant moves. The Rangers have no money. It's the same issue every year. The Rangers have these soft players throughout their lineup. Panarin will disappear in the playoffs. The Rangers PP will disappear. Good luck. The Rangers need so many things. More size and strength in the top 6. The Rangers D is not good enough. The media is captivated by Gustafsson's fancy stats. The goalie can't stop a beach ball.

Elliotte Friedman doesn't believe the Maple Leafs will make any significant moves at the deadline because management doesn't believe the team is good enough to win four playoff rounds. Are the Rangers good enough to win four playoff rounds?

The Rangers struggled to beat Anaheim. The Rangers are playing San Jose tonight who played in LA last night. The Rangers saving grace is the other teams also stink and someone needs to win these games.
So weird that you chose the Panthers to talk about.
