Rangers need 3 pieces. 2 forwards (at least one who can play in the middle) and a defenseman. Im not sure we see a major splash at any of the 3 spots (my pref is a trade for Hanifin) but with Chytil's LTIR space we can fill all 3 spots to varying degrees.

I'd rather prioritize the defensman and do what you can with the other spots.

Our biggest problem right now is a #6 and a #8 playing on our top 4.

Ive been on defense as the biggest need since December but there hasnt been any chatter about it. Drury obviously runs a tight ship (just ask Rammer), but most if not all of the players linked to us have been forwards. I think if they can add a solid D-man and a center like Dowd or Kuraly they will be ok. They can make a solid 4th line out of Goodrow, Brodz, Edstrom, Rempe group.

If you acquired a 0.80 PPG player and that's what you paid for, that's a very significant asset.

Tarasenko's reputation is inflated well beyond that.

As a rule, you should never pay for players who are perceived as better than what the stats say they are, even if they're good.

You also have to take into account that this is a player on the downswing. It's not like JT Miller who has a 0.78 for his career but has been well over 1.0 for the last several years.

It certainly comes down to cost. If its reasonable against what other available players on the market are going for then we could do worse.

Yeah, we don't have as many assets as people think.

We can't really afford to do a lot of 2-for-1s or 3-for-1s anymore. We might have one big move left but then we will be hurting elsewhere. As much as people don't want to hear it, we stopped the talent acquisition phase too early, simply put, and even setting that aside, the Copp, Tarasenko, and Kane rentals were just terrible ideas and terrible values for us. We could really use another 3-4 good prospects right now.

They simply cannot buy this deadline. Yeah, they have talent. But most of that talent isn't at their "last chance," moment quite yet. At the same time, it's not so painstakingly close to winning it all that they just have to try to insulate themselves. They are one of the best 8 or so teams and they could win or lose any round, but you don't throw assets away on a toss-up.

They need to get their youth some experience down the stretch and try to feed minutes to Lafreniere, Kakko, Cuylle, Berard, Othmann, Rempe and Edstrom. Losing Chytil this year really killed them. They would need to go on a legit miracle run without a real 3C. They won't have the firepower at 5v5 in the playoffs - they never did before, they definitely won't now without a real 3C. It would have been nice to have another young center they could have inserted but they don't listen to me or they would have had one or two.

They need to move out Trouba and Goodrow in the offseason at any cost. They have to get out of those salaries. We can table the "is Trouba actually an NHL defenseman," talk but whether he is or isn't, he's too expensive. We can get 2-3 guys who are better than him for his salary. I'm also open to moving Lindgren if he can bring back a package for a long term piece. He has had a very bad year but his prior years were measurably better.

In an ideal world, with the cap going up slightly, you pawn Goodrow off on someone for free (ie, you don't have to pay assets for someone to take him), you trick someone who thinks they need size into paying you a first for Trouba, and Lindgren is swapped for a young center.

Perrault probably isn't ready for next year yet. With Goodrow, and probably Pitlick and Vesey gone, you are looking at

Kreider Zibanejad Kakko
Panarin Trocheck Lafreniere
Cuylle Young Center Othmann
Bottom line some makeup of Brodzinski, Rempe, Edstrom, Berard, journeyman grinder

If Chytil comes back, Cuylle can play bottom line.

Then you use whatever assets you have to go get a top pair defender. Let's say you can use the first you got for Trouba to package for Chychrun (just an example).

Chychrun - Fox
Miller - Schneider
Gustaffson, Robertson, Jones, cheap UDFA
With how stupid the NHL GMs are you’re never more than 1-2 good moves away from resurrecting the window. Problem is Drury isn’t smart or creative so he won’t. There’s probably a ton of things they could do with Lindgren/Schneider trades

Tarasenko just isn't that good and never was. He's the most underwhelming star of his generation.

For a guy who plays like he's a star, and focuses entirely on offense, he's a 0.8 PPG player.
This is an awful take. Over rated is the last thing you can call him. He is highly skilled, a great forechecker, has a lethal shot and an incredible playmaker.

He led his team in points in:
2014-15
2015-16 by 20 points
2016-17 by 20 points
2021-22

He also finished runner up:
2017-18 runner up by 4 points
2018-19 runner up by 9 points and played 6 less games

It's not like he plays with Petterson, Panarin, McDavid... He is the guy and he is a line driver...
Anyone that watches him play would say he is incredible.

If you don't want him ... that's understandable. But calling him over rated is nonsensical.

He's a good player, he has been for a long time. He's not a real star.

If you could clone Tarasenko and give me two, I would take Panarin over both of them. That's a star.

Hell, Panarin's worst season is as good as Tarasenko's best season.

Especially at this point. Even fans of Tarasenko would admit he's complimentary at this point in his career.

In terms of cost and guys who I think will cost a minimal amount of assets, I still think Okposo and Girgensons are the easy slam dunk options at forward. The team needs another player who can play center and Okposo has a nice ability to play either in the top-6 and not look completely out of place, ala Wheeler, or in the bottom-6.

Okposo
14p in 52 games @ 5v5
-1.4 CF rel
1.4 p/60 @ 5v5
13:42 TOI per game on average

Girgensons
4p in 37 games
-0.2 CF rel
0.6 p/60
11:34 TOI per game
- The last 2 years his numbers have been closer to 1.4p/60 to 1.8 p/60 and pretty even possession numbers while getting pretty heavy defensive deployment

The total cap hit here is $5m. This likely allows for the team to demote Rempe and push Vesey down to the 4th line again. They COULD demote Edstrom as well and recall him as needed.

Panarin-Trochek-Lafreniere
Kreider-Zibanejad-Okposo
Cuylle-Brodzinski-Kakko
Goodrow-Girgensons-Vesey
No spare

With Wheeler out and Chytil out, the team should have ~$6m to play with so Drury would still have some cap space, up to $1.8 if they trade Jones, to backfill on defense.

But this point of comparing Tarasenko to Panarin at this stage is moot because in a trade the two would not cost the same.

It all comes down to cost.

Yes, it all comes down to cost, and Tarasenko still has a name that's bigger than his ability. Arguably always was and definitely is now.

That raises cost.

Here's my weekly Jonny Brodzinski post...

36 games played
15 points, 13 points at 5v5
-1.0 CF rel (but he's hovering right at 50% which is pretty good, just other lines are better)
53.1% FO
2.1 p/60 @ 5v5
11:26 average TOI

If Brodzinski were on another team, people here would be clamoring for him.

Tommy Novak as a comparable:
44 games played
27 points, 16 points at 5v5
+2.8 CF rel (he's at 51.4%)
44% FO
1.9 p/60 # 5v5
14:23 average TOI

I'm really not seeing a good upgrade there. They should add depth, yes, but moving Brodzinski down doesn't seem to be the play.

I like Brodzinski but I dont feel comfortable with him and Goodrow as our only bottom 6 center options the farther we advance in the playoffs.

i love how multiple posters on this board are calling drury a terrible GM, beyond the trade of buch i think hes done a solid job with this team

people will complain regardless of how well the team is playing
I just don’t get the point of citing team success as an indicator of quality GMing. This team succeeds on the backs of all players who were here before Drury and virtually all the players he’s brought in have been the teams biggest liabilities. Yeah he has a few wins but Jason Pierre Paul can count them on one hand

Our previous GM couldnt win with these players. Just saying.

i mean you are copping out saying the players brought in before his tenure are carrying the team.....the same GM who got fired and signed the players we have to horrible contracts? drury has done well

hes drafted well and hes done well to try and fill in the depth, not sure where we would be without quick for instance this year. Gus has played extremely well this year as well

Bunch of bull. He has done a lot of good things so far. Most of his draft picks look pretty damn good so far and we will see just how good in the coming years. He has signed Lindgren, Laf, Chytil, Kakko Vesey, Quick, Gus, to very reasonable deals. His deadline acquisitions the last 2 years have been mostly sound decisions also. He has had his clunkers also such as the Buch trade and Nemeth signing but all GM's have good and bad. I don't think he has been nearly as bad as you make it seem.

I like Brodzinski but it would be surprising if the Rangers felt comfortable enough to head down the stretch with him as the 3c. That's why you hear about the Rangers looking for a center more than anything. Perhaps they get both a center and a RW.
