Roster Building thread - Part IX - (2024 edition)

Unpopular opinion but I don't think there's a way to fix this team in its current iteration.
Good ol' country club Rangers looking forward to the offseason like usual.
It's probably time to trade Zibanejad, Panarin, Kreider, Kakko, Trouba and Shesterkin while they have value and start another rebuild more than anything.
This team straight up disappears when it matters. Just look at the Tampa and Devils series. Last year was the year more than any in team history and they choked it away like the losers they are against their arch rivals.
Also probably time to fire Drury and staff and go in a different direction. Preferably from someone who has never worked in the Rangers organization.
I've never liked Laviolette and was pretty grossed out when they signed him.
This is a core that is designed to get bounced in the first round year in and year out. They have no grit. They have no heart. And it shows.

Is the 4th Period.com reliable? I like Dennis Bernstein. The rest of them not so much.

Buffalo?Casey Mittelstadt?

Chris Johnston added Kakko to his trade list

I like Kakko but a trade would be better for him. He looks more depressed that usual.

"Hockey trade". No rental or Frank Vatrano shit.
-8 offense. Sounds like Kakko lol

Here are all of the centers who have been discussed as compared to Brodzinski and Goodrow this season. Yes it's a small sample size but some of these guys are considerably worse and will cost decent assets to acquire. Roslovic has been playing wing. We believe Henrique has been as well (per @RangerBoy ). McBain and Middlestedt are RFA's, Jenner and Bjugstad have term left.

The only guy I didn't add here was Kevin Hayes as we need to wait and see if St Louis falls out of the race.

I'm still on bandwagon 'don't give up prime assets for any center here). Upgrade Goodrow and push him to the wing unless things turn around for him.

In theory, they have the top available center, Adam Henrique – although anyone who follows the Ducks closely this year knows that Henrique has played a lot more wing than center and looks more comfortable on the wing.

On the one hand, the notion that teams trying to acquire Henrique are doing so to fill a gap in the middle is a little muddled. On the other, Henrique does have some versatility – and he is dynamite in the face-off circle, six years in a row now above 50 percent success rate. He’s the Ducks’ second-best option after Mason McTavish.

If they can use Kakko to upgrade the top 6 and backfill the bottom 6 with a kid from Hartford, I would not be opposed. Otherwise just keep him, he’s playing good on that line. Probably why other teams want him now.

Henrique is an older Copp. We’ve been down that road already.

bern is available for beaucoup bucks
but time constraints, saving the world, as consultant only

howev, first act will be to appoint @RangerBoy as Director of Player Personnel and effective GM, I will give direction/input as needed.

YEAH, THAT'S THE TICKET

If we're going for a big splash i'd hope to get better players than those 3 jokers
We should invest in a sheet of plywood.....but even then with a standard 4x8 sheet....they likely still score on Igor . We best hope he gets fixed before the deadline . I'm sure we could fit the plywood in under the Cap.....

This trade could become expensive as in assets long-term value is not that far apart but the Rangers would be buying a recently appreciated asset for depressed in the same short-term period.

At any event if Kakko's to be moved - get an important long-term piece. Hanifin under contract would be my choice.

Any word on that Russian who was possibly interested in joining the Rangers (among other teams)?
That Russian should be a long shot, if anything. Much more likely he will be struggling than otherwise.

This is the same core that came back from 3-1 and 3-2 deficits in the same playoff run. If there is anything that displays heart, that is it so I'm not buying this at all.

no one complained about grit and heart with this team a month and a half ago. If it wasn't a problem then, its not a problem now because nothing on the actual roster has changed outside of Bonino. They went through a shit stretch where they didn't play well (as does every team) and had shit goaltending on top of it. No amount of grit is helping there.

I don't disagree that its probably time to move on from some guys or that this team probably isn't good enough as currently constructed, but its not as bad as you or others think.

I am actually happy that they have had/are having their funk now. The worst thing that could happen is if they have a really bad funk going into the playoffs. Dealing with it and overcoming now would be a galvanizing event or they fall apart. I don't see falling apart. The question is if they come out of this stronger or just continue to be meh.

There was reason for optimism after the first 2 games out of the break.

That went away after the Chicago game which was pathetic. Will be interested to see how they respond vs a team that is playing well tonight.

The league is different these days. Any team can win or lose if they get hot in the playoffs because there is so much mediocrity.

I mean, the Rangers, despite their awful stretch are 5th in the league. A win tonight and they move back into 3rd. That's what the NHL is now with how much they've expanded. Half these guys would be in the minors 15 years ago.

A few small upgrades and Igor getting his head on straight could propel them.

They can probably beat anyone if they get hot at the right time. They can also lose to anyone. The NHL is trending towards NFL status with how it operates.

Maybe you’ll get your wish if they get bounced in the first again which seems very likely.

Really? Because in the NFL it’s the same 4 or 5 teams that are good every year.

I am actually happy that they have had/are having their funk now. The worst thing that could happen is if they have a really bad funk going into the playoffs. If they did we’d have fans coping and saying “they’re just saving it for the playoffs/they’re already locked into x seed so I’m not worried”

We saw how well that played out last year.

Well if he’s still playing that badly we make Quick the starter. Problem solved.

Or even never dealing with adversity all season long. We've seen how terribly it worked out for most teams in that situation.

Kakko to Minnesota would be interesting.

There is no way they trade Hartman before his extension kicks in, but he would fill a need. Middleton would too but that should happen at the expense of Lindgren.
