Who is this years Barbashev? If the Caps fall further out of it and are willing to deal with us I'd look into a package deal for Dowd and Edmundson.

You are right about the need for the large defenseman on the back end. Every team that has won in recent years has had big boys with poor analytic profiles on their back end. You mentioned Vegas. Tampa Bay won cups with Schenn, Bogosian, Rutta, David Savard playing a lot of games. Colorado added Manson and won the WCF & Cup with Eric and Jack Johnson as their 3rd pair. Edmundson, Bortuzzo with St Louis. Its a pattern. Lindgren and Gustafsson arent going to hold up.
This is true, but they were in a third-pair role and all of those teams played the shit out of puck-moving defensemen in their top 4. In Colorado's case, their heavy minutes guys were undersized.

That goes back to the point @Raspewtin made that when we get these type of players, they play too much, or they play too much because we paid too much to begin with, like Trouba.

I really don't wanna take Gus out because he and Schneider are a good pair. Schnieder profiles as the type of guy you want, so leave him with somebody he plays well with.

You're right about Lindgren. Upgrade him to a defenseman who does things well besides bleed and it should be fine.

Trouba's been just having a child for like five seasons now. People were warning us that he couldn't play defense his last two years with the Jets.

I don't blame people for thinking Miller still has potential and Trouba just is what he is.
EdJovanovski warned everybody and said we lost the Pionk trade!!! When everyone thought it was the steal of the century!

I don’t want to trade Kakko, but if we are going to trade him. Zegras is the type of player you go after. Both young players. Both potential core players. I think both could use a change of scenery at this point
I agree with the principle, I remain underwhelmed with Zegras as the return for Kakko though. I already know a bunch of you disagree with me, that's fine. If we do this, I will of course root for Zegras to explode when he comes back.

The trade deadline last season. Tarasenko AND Kane. Barbashev was out there.
and who did they acquire in 2022? Copp, Vatrano, Braun. None of them fancy skill players. Plus Barbashev is a LW. I know it doesn’t matter to some people but the Rangers had holes on RW, not LW. Of course Tarasenko and Kane made more sense than Barbashev at the time.

Am I going crazy or does everyone just not remember Igor having a similarly super shitty February last year. The only difference was the team scored 4+ goals in 6/8 games to cover up the stink (3+ in 7/8 games). He’s fundamentally off right now, and I posted what were the issues in his game. Vally had a whole breakdown of it last year too with respect to his mechanics. They’re going to give him every chance to work it out and get on track.

The goalie market is gonna be lackluster as it always is, even with whatever ridiculous price Trotz wants for Saros. It’s just easy for the Canadian media to hype up because they have Marek saying multiple times a day, “the most valuable player is the backup goalie making less than $1m.” Nobody is busting a nut to bring in Jake Allen or some other Joe Shmo. Drury isn’t punting this season when they’re in 1st place still by trading Igor and playing Quick into the absolute ground. I wouldn’t give him a mega deal extension, but he’s 100% a Ranger until that time comes.

We won the trade IMO, but overpaid him, especially with the flat cap.
That is part of the reason some of us hated the trade because of the contract that was handed to him. No one really misses Pionk albeit was hoping to draft a center like Tomasino/ McMichael that were projected to go in the 20's.

I dont mind Gus on the 3rd pair. Playing him above that is not a good situation for anyone. He has made some egregious turnovers recently. I think I love him most as the first man up if there is an injury. At minimum we need to add a #7 who can't fit in someone's pocket like Jones (who I also like). Minnesota is the team Id be talking to if i was Drury. Middleton is a hidden gem, but Minny might know that already and not want to move him. Merrill or Bogo are guys I would trust as a 6/7. The Wild are horrible on the PK and Lindgren is a Minnesota native. They might see him as a long term piece to play with Faber or Spurgeon.

The move for Trouba made sense in a vacuum, but then extending him at that number when they had just traded for Fox and DeAngelo needing a new contract (which they stupidly gave him a year later) made no sense. It was a clear example of Davidson navigating the "rebuild" with blinders on.

Had they kept the pick they would have drafted a Euro winger anyway so moot point

I remember he had a mediocre season until the final stretch and he turned it on
I dunno what other peoples evaluations are but to my (non goalie) eye he is tentative and unsure of his positioning and reactions. He's not coming otu and challenging shooters the way he does when he's on, and he looks confused about what's happening in front of him and second guessing himself.

I think Igor is playing himself out of a mega extension at this point....

Also re: Trouba's contract that was signed before the pandemic and before the flat cap. For the most part it was "maybe it's a lot but with the cap going up and the contract ending when he's in his early 30's, it'll be OK". The pandemic really messed that part up.

The pandemic wiped about 4 years of cap growth.
So assume the cap should be about 15-20m higher than it currently is.

Would this work?

Kakko, Robertson, 2nd, good but not top tier prospect for Marchenko and Jenner
Jones + something small for Edmundsson
Small asset for O Sundqvist
Hartford fodder and a low pick for McCarron

Bread - Trochek - LAF
Kreider - Zib - Marchenko
Cuylle - Jenner - Vesey/Wheelchair
Goodrow - Sundqvist - Wheelchair/Vesey

MCcarron, Edström

Edmundsson - Fox
Miller - Trouba
Lindgren - Gustavsson/Schneider
