so any room to take a chance on a Spooner for Holden? Sounds like Boston doesnt want to pay the asking price but will see soon

There's a chance the Bruins could walk away from the arbitrators award, which would make Spooner a free agent. I'd give him a 1 year $3.5M deal.

Dump Holden for a 3rd

IMO it has already been an A+ offseason. If Gorton somehow manages to trade Staal this will be the single greatest season by a GM in Rangers history.

I still don't think he got back enough for Stepan. Hes sitting at a B+ IMO right now.

Getting rid of Staal (buy out or otherwise) would push his grade to a solid A for me.

Why is there so much OTT-NYR Staal.... proposals? Does Ottawa have a thing for burnt out D men or just wishful thinking of ripping off someone like DAL or OTT.

What's the use in buying out Staal right now? We have the cap space, and we'll save money if it's done next year. May as well see if we can move him during/after the season and/or get any value back, otherwise just do it next year and save those extra years of buyout cap hits.

People really need to STOP thinking like this.

Forget the cap implications; you really want our idiot coach giving Staal top minutes (you know he will if given the opportunity). Having him on the roster is a detriment to our overturned defense. He just cannot be an option. Bite the bullet, get rid of him. Hopefully it's like BBKers says and we see him either traded (idk who would take him) or bought out this weekend. PLEASE.

I agree, Rangers without Staal have to play some sort of developing D. Plus the extreme turtle/prevent with a lead would almost have to go, coaching would not have anyone left who they'd trust to play it anymore.

I can answer that with a question. Does the Sahara Desert have a lot of sand?

I was at a bachelors party a few years ago where many NHL players, agents and scouts took part. AV came up as a point of discussion. No details, but it was (unanimously) not Pretty. Someone said he should coach a bad team for once. Maybe his next job gives him that opportunity

Digging this post up because I meant to comment earlier but in some ways it encapsulates what drives me nuts about sports and how much of a clubhouse and ridiculous atmosphere it is.

There are several things I dislike about AV and wish he'd change how he does stuff but the whole "he's never coached a bad team he's overrated as a coach" is just some petty and small minded thinking. No one thought the Rangers in 2013/2014 were any good. Playoff bubble team. Only superstar was Lundqvist. He made them a top offensive team and took them to the finals. ECF the next season and top of the league, one of the best offensive teams. Doing that without superstar forwards , getting the most out of the players he had. He continues to do that despite his faults.

In Vancouver he also took over a team that wasn't expected to do much and he coached them to a team record high in wins. I guess if there's one "criticism" it's that he has had some good goaltending on his teams, and yeah he hasn't had to coach a bottom feeder, just teams that people considered bubble teams, but he's always gotten a whole lot out of his players.

He has his faults as a coach and heck I'm sure he has his faults when it comes to communicating with players or other staff members as well, but the people who act like he's just a plain bad coach are way off base IMO.

Brooks hasn't exactly been right alot this offseason, although I think he's right on this. Don't see the Leafs moving Bozak and especially not for Holden. Who else is there?

He's coached the Rangers for 4 seasons and the team has overachieved in 3 of them.

Larry Brooks was wrong about Stepan and wrong about Shattenkirk. It seems as though the disdain for him by the players in the lockerroom as pushed him to the outside as far as him having sources goes.

If you are including 13-14 as an overachieving team, I would disagree tremendously, That was a great team that I'd say underachieved early on actually, and then once they got to Christmas, after that were a top-3 team in the league. The 15-16 team was really bad after the incredible Hank 1st 2 months, and then got destroyed in the playoffs. I'd say only this season's team overachieved

What about 55+ point JT Miller as the 2C?

Yeah, if we're moving Miller back to C, then he's the one getting 2nd line minutes, not Hayes. I would be very happy if if this is the plan--separate Miller and Hayes and they're both better off for it.

This off-season has convinced me that Brooks' sources pretty much died when Sather stepped down. Gorton running the ship and he's left to speculating.

I don't think you would look at 13-14's roster in a vacuum and say that team makes the SCF. And I don't think you would look at 14-15s roster in a vacuum and say that team wins the Presidents Trophy.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion here. And of course you might feel like he has overachieved and not underachieved. I was just vaguely reciting what pretty important people within the league had to say about him. Several of whom have dealt with him on a daily professional basis. And I am pretty sure you can find another group of people that feel exactly the opposite of what these people had to say. Such is life
