The biggest thing is not giving him a two year contract. Others have said it already, but that will take him to a UFA, which absolutely cannot happen. We currently have $7.6M in cap space. There's room there to give Mika money. I think they'll give him the Brassard deal adjusted to whatever % that was of the cap, so something over $5M for 5 years

It might be wise to go to arbitration and do a one year deal. Let him prove he has turned a corner. Or hasn't. Then they can do a long term deal next summer. He'd still be RFA, is that right?

There's no real point in giving him a one year deal because even if he has a bad year this year he's probably looking at a similar long term deal he would get right now anyway and if he has a huge year now you're looking st paying him much more

We forget how elated we were with Vigneault's hiring four years ago. he coached the team to the SCF his first year. Klein, Stralman Pouliot, Brass all came on with him. Staal/G's TOI was a head-scratcher... the Glass stuff was none too popular and Yandle's disuse was REALLY weird. Aside from those things, he's been a very good coach and he seems to get the best out of guys.

I do not think we used Yandle in such a weird way. Yandle is a good offensive player who has had some shaky defensive moments. I really like the guy but we played him around 20 minutes a night. He led our teams defensemen in PP minutes per game. He scored 6 more points for us in 2016 than he did for the Panthers in 2017. The only thing we did not have him do is kill penalties.

Mishandling of specific players aside, you didn't list the all too familiar comatose playoff performances as a team in big games (e.g. TB)

The Rangers back up goaltending situation is not good. It hasn't been this bad since 2009-10. Lundqvist played nearly every game that season which is the only non-playoff season since the 2005 lockout. Pavelec is not very good. The Winnipeg Jets had one of the worst goaltending situations in the NHL and Pavelec was a major reason. Perhaps the Russian goaltender playing in Finland can challenge Pavelec for #2. Raanta played in the NHL his first season in North America after signing as a free agent from Finland. Biron,Talbot and Raanta. Lundqvist is 35 going on 36. Talbot and Raanta stepped in for Lundqvist when he was injured. The Rangers will need 20-25 starts from their back up goaltender. Do you trust Pavelec to be that guy?

Nope. He's trash, but Benny Allaire is Benny Allaire.

No, but I trust Allaire...

Tyler Johnson signed for 5 mill so I think that is a legit ceiling.
4.7-5.1mill salary
4-5 years

A. His side probably considers his role more important than Tyler.

B. His side also probably considers Johnson's after tax salary.

I consider my role more important but I get paid based on my production. :)

NY and California both have insane tax policies. 90% of teams do not have those kind of tax consequences even if they do have a state income tax. Those two states also have some benefits and they have not had trouble attracting pro athletes who like the spotlight or ad possibilities. If the players play there they deal with both good and bad.

FO had choices for a backup. I'm sure Allair saw something that he could fix and work with. And that option had to be a able to carry a lot of games for the Hank's reasons you listed.

How good did it look when we signed Valiquitte to be our backup?

When Biron lost his game over the off-season and all we had was Talbot?

Raanta had fallen to 3rd on the depth chart in Chicago.

Turned out fine every time.

If the divide is between $4.75 and $6.25 then this $1.5 gap should be settled $0.5-$1.0 at around $$5.25 and in exchange the player gets a chance at certain (high) performance bonuses for an extra $0.4-$0.5

I would not break the bank over Zib at this point . I would sooner get him for a reasonable amount long term at #2-3 center price based on his performance up till now and use the savings to wave at JT next Summer when he leaves the Isles ...a million or 2 extra is worth throwing at Tavares...not Mika . Overpay the right guy . Just how I would like to see it done even if it means a step back for us .

How could you sign him to a long term 2-3 center salary if this is not his role now going into the season nor how he is projected to be?

Zib wants a contract...

Where 2 of the 5 years are RFA
He has hit 50 points once in his career

And he wants over 6 million per? Please. I get that arbitration negotiations are about starting high, and centers are a position of need around the league, but that's a silly ask. As a true UFA I could see him getting 6 million per, but barely.

Sounds like a "sky is falling" post to me

Valiquette was not very good.

Talbot had been in the Rangers organization for three seasons before becoming the back-up

I proposed Haggerty for Raanta trade here nine days before the trade was made.

I knew Raanta could play.

I have seen Pavelec. He is not very good.

The Rangers can't get into a situation where AV is playing Lundqvist too much because Pavelec is not vey good and every point matters to make the playoffs.

Vally played all the easiest games, and very few at that.

RB voices a legitimate concern here. Pavelec is known all around the league as the Girardi of goaltenders.

I agree with his hope that this Georgiev kid lights it up in the AHL so we have an option if Pavelec pulls a Biron early in the season and NYR have to look elsewhere.

I don't usually agree with Rb and disagree with 2k2, but I'm very concerned about the backup situation. Replace Raanta last year with a .900 goalie- we let in 17 extra goals, the goalie goes 12-12 instead of 16-8, and we may not even make the playoffs.
