not sure how much less can be done. if kakko wasnt a former 2oa pick for this team we would be talking about how to replace him on the roster rather than constantly defending the atrocity that this pick has been over three years,

Some more real talk. If you think they’re winning a Cup scratching together a few cheap centers behind Mika you are mistaken. And Drury knows it. Centers and D men will win you championships. Not wingers and plug in centers

They don't need to make this decision right now though. Evan at $2.3-2.5m Kaako is a valuable piece on a 2 year deal. Kick the can down the road, see how players develop and what options open up on the trade market and go from there. There isn't really a 'good' option that requires Kaako be part of that equation right now. Miller and Scheifele are decent fits but not ideal.

Sure of course unless they want to make a move for a top guy they are going to look at kakko first to unload.

Miller and Dubois both with the latter being the better option absolutely would include Kakko

Really? Impact top-6 wingers? I would like to see that actually come to fruition before trying to trade an asset that has his value at an all-time low at this point.

Lafreniere has earned a top 6 spot. He is a year younger and looked his best playing with Kreider & Mika when forced to play up. Kakko played in the top 6 all year, when healthy, and didn't do much offensively. Panarin & Kreider are obviously locked in, Kravtsov & Blais are back, Othmann looks ready, as does Cuylle (who provides a different element the lineup lacks.

Kakko not being signed yet makes me believe he's been in trade talks so the acquiring team can negotiate their own extension. Again, I'm sure it comes off as me wanting to trade KK, which isnt the case. I just believe at this stage of the team's trajectory adding an impact center who can defend and score is more important than the development of a to this point pretty disappointing player.

Seems like a real pipe dream but this is a guy you give up Kakko for. Rangers have had interest before as well.

The problem with Lindholm is there’s no term left on his contract and then we won’t be able to afford him as he should get more than Kadri, IMO. More proven track record, superior two way play and did it on a worst team over the past few years. So you move Kakko + for Lindholm who is as perfect a fit as you could ask for and then you have to lose other pieces if you want to keep him. Which I’d be fine with one of the high priced vets going to make room for a player like Lindholm, but the likelihood of it actually manifesting seems quite slim.

Malkin 4 x $5.25. It gets him some more cash than the rumored 3 x $6 from Pittsburgh. And there are a lot of surrounding factors that would make this is a palatable move for him. Location, State of the Team, Travel schedule.

Re-Sign Motte. Re-Sign Braun on the cheap. Bridge Kakko. Sign Holtby or Lindgren. Try and squeeze in one more Vet.

One more variable would be Patrick Kane, IF Drury can get a 3rd team to retain another 50%. Would be an all in move.

i just dont get the fascination of malkin. we want to be tougher 5v5 to play against. he isnt that, he is usually injured for long stretches of a season, he doesnt diversify this group at all. if anything it is strome on steroids WHEN he is healthy enough to play. he is awful on faceoffs, i just dont see the fit. this seems like an agent leaking stuff to get his client a better contract somewhere

Kakko seems unfazed by rumors he might be getting traded. Nice to see him enjoying a normal summer, especially since he hasn't had one since before he was drafted.

Get it out of the system and start training in a few weeks.

Malkin gives the Rangers what Patty Kane would but at a position of need and without giving up any assets.It might take 4 years, which is risky, but he is also the most obvious future LTIR candidate in NHL history. Id be interested.

people dont want to give a 28 year old copp 7 years but want to give 35 year old malkin with long injury history 4 years which is a 35+ contract that doesnt come off the books if he retires??

malkin was a point a game last year (he played half a season again) and half his points came on the pp

and if you thought panarin and strome were frustrating not listening to the coach, how do you think a geno bread pairing will play out?

Let's say we buy out Nemeth today. Would mean we have 11,7ish for next season. Still need a #2 goalie, re-sign Kakko and apparently we are the front-runners for Kadri. I guess you could make all that work, at least for next season. Don't know how viable it would be in the long run.

If Drury is dead set on signing Kadri, I guess Kakko would be the odd man out but for what value? RFA who is turning more into a reclamation project soon? Just giving him away to make cap space for #2C would be horrible asset management IMO.

They wouldnt have to extend him for 2 seasons so I am pretty confident it would work itself out.

Yeah theres no perfect option at 2C, everyone comes with warts of some kind. For me its the footspeed with Malkin. Still would prefer JT/Dubois/Kadri.

Trocheck is a better stylistic fit than Strome or Copp, but he's going to get a contract very similar to them. Remains to be seen if the Rangers want to pay him.

If you think Chytil might be for real right now I’d argue D Strome stastny trocheck would be the way to go. Either of those guys could be a middle 6 center as needed while giving Chytil more mins. Even the Kane trade would fall in this bucket.

If you think you’re better stacking up the middle and Chytil stays as a 3C for another couple years. You look at miller Dubois malkin Kadri and I think trocheck could fall in this bucket as well. Kakko would be a goner.

Trocheck may really be the best fit at the end of the day.
