Two league sources confirmed to
The Athletic a report from last week that
Andrew Copp and
Ryan Strome are near certainties to hit the open market. Copp, who had a successful run with the Rangers after Drury surrendered three draft picks to the
Jets at the trade deadline, is seeking at a minimum the deal that
Zach Hyman got from the
Oilers last summer, according to the sources: Seven years at $5.5 million per. He could be aiming even higher on salary.
The Rangers can’t afford to go that long on term or that high on salary, given the need to find a No. 2 goalie this year and keep space available for
K’Andre Miller and
Alexis Lafrenière next summer. So it seems almost certain Copp is headed elsewhere. The
Red Wings have been rumored as a desired landing spot for the Michigan native.
Strome is seeking a five- to six-year deal at something around that same $5.5 million, according to the sources. There have not been many talks between the sides in recent days, and two people close to Strome said he’s warmed to the idea of leaving the Rangers after his career rebirth in New York.
