For all of the talk of players available this off-season the guy who may be intriguing for Drury is Barbashev next off-season. Will St Louis re-sign him? Thomas, Tarasenko, O'Reilly all need new contracts next year

Yowza, Trochek checks a lot of boxes but shooting is not one of them. Be nicer to have someone who can bury pucks out there with Artemi.

The Rangers top options are probably Trochek and Copp. They will check in with Malkin and Kadri I'm sure. I'm also sure they will be listening for any center who may be made available by teams looking to shed cap space.

Drury is in a pretty nice position though. If everything above falls through, he could very easily sign a couple of guys like Domi and Rask or Rask and Larsson and go into the season with more flexibility and an improved 2-way supporting cast and continue monitoring moving forward. This also goes for someone like Dylan Strome or Colin White as well.

There are guys on the market who would probably be chomping at the bit to sign a 1-2 year deal with the Rangers to play with this group of wingers to either build or rebuild their value who could be stop-gaps here.

I'm not saying they would be perfect, but there are back-up options which may be intriguing if others price themselves out.

I would be very disappointed if this is the direction he chooses to/has to go. We would be a worse team on paper going into next year and this is a prime Cup contention year. Be bold and make a move.

He has the exact same birthday as Strome and is just about one year older than Copp. Doubt it makes any difference.
Yeah, but do you know what times they were born at? Their rising suns/moons can be the key for us to choose which of them will help us win a Cup.

So that sounds good. 'Be bold make a move'. But what if those moves cripple his flexibility moving forward or rip apart the cupboard of future assets?

Miller may cost a TON and cripple their future cap with an older player on a high dollar contract
Kadri would be a crippling older player contract
Copp/Trochek/Strome are all top-6 players with some warts and may require an overpay we all will be uncomfortable with
Bennett may not be moved
Malkin may only move from Pittsburgh if given a 4 year deal at 36 years old

What if all of these things occur, which is possible. Does he force something and overpay? Does he just pay someone like Trochek $7m per season if needed knowing it will be crippling? Or does he take a breath, retain his ammunition in terms of cap space and assets until the right opportunity presents itself and look to improve other areas?

Trade for Haula.
This is what I was saying before. Teams who are at or near the cap will need to move players. The market for those players will be bad because no one has cap space and even if they do, they won't want to give up major assets without sending cap the other way. Trades will happen once some of the UFA's start deciding where to go.

Has any credible source Linked the Rangers to Malkin?

not that i know of but apparently has said in the past if he ever left pitt hed go to ny or florida. he has a home in fla, but neither fla team has cap flexibility so unlikely. obviously reality of being ufa could expand his list so who knows.

other than our cap situation to figure out it does make a ton of sense logically re our needs / he likes the spotlight and nyc / were a contender / he gets to stick it to pitt

i wouldnt be surprised to see him take less than pitt had on table wherever he winds up. reading the tea leaves i get the impression the bigger factor in things falling apart was his not feeling prioritized by pitt as someone they wanted to make sure they held onto much earlier on

Is Kadri even better than Trochek? Aside from one season where he was on the best team in the league? It's debatable which is what horrifies me about Kadri and a 7 year contract at $8+Million

Does he play center or is he mainly a winger? Haula has been very inconsistent production wise in his career.
Took 806 faceoffs in 21-22. Won 53.8%.

Career 52.0%.

He'd be a real good 4th line center.

Haula

One year at $2.5mil.

Just catching up on the last 20 pages and I have to say, if we give 31 year old Kadri a contract that will start the season at age 32, I mean, how long are you really going to commit to a 33 year old player that's gonna be looking for the biggest deal of his life hitting UFA at age 34 and wanting both term and money? Can this team really afford to sign a 35 year old coming off a career best year to a long term deal when we're already strapped? Does a 36 year old center making $8M for 6 more years really make this team better?

Larry also proposed Sabres retaining half of Eichel's salary last summer as a way to pry Kakko out of NY. At this point he has sticky notes on his fax machine on all the clickbait options he has to work with. "Larry, suggest acquiring a big Dolan's Stars player at the cost of tons of highly beloved young players for the 50% retention"

We've been linked to Hertl, JT Miller X2, Eichel, Malkin, Kadri. This is just what these reporters do. As if Chris Drury's office is going around telling people he's tampering with a player he can't afford before FA season even starts. Drury does due diligence and reporters generate clicks off of it. Seravalli with the "above and beyond" interest (in JT MIller back in December) and now again. Both times reserved for the Rangers and with an agenda to serve that's not Drury.

Staple says:
- Malkin and Kadri will be expensive.
- Penguins might be biggest competition for Trocheck.
- No interest from Rangers in Stastny
But, but, but, Staple did not say they were out on Malkin, or Kadri for that matter

Also Motte signing is dependent on how much cap a 2C takes. Motte isn't going to wait too long, I wouldn't think.

Bury this year, buyout next year is the best solution, don’t give up any assets.

Rangers MO. They can't buy out Nemeth, they will need the money and all cap space available in '24 for that *big name* UFA C they want to sign that summer.

So, PLD (currently signed for 2 years), or someone like Bennett makes sense. Both are expensive in trade ammo (which the Rangers have) but manageable cap wise. Then come summer '24 look again at the C situation and UFA list (Matthews, Aho). If PLD flops or disappoints the Rangers are free to move on. Include Nemeth in the deal with the Jets (Bowness likes his big shot blocking D).

Kakko, Chytil, Nemeth, '23 1st for PLD + 2nd.

people get tidbits on what the Rangers are up to because the teams they're talking to leak stuff one way or another. I'm 100% sure they've kicked the tires on everyone, probably made some decent offers for someone like Miller, but I don't think anyone has a clear idea how far the Rangers are willing to go to acquire which player or what other plans they might have
