i think people here continue to discount just how rare it is to get the the conference finals and are taking for granted we will just get there again with mostly the same group despite winning two game 7s to pull it off. it isnt easy to get there and it is less easy to get back. this team needs improvements, not all of them will be in house.
Hence why they are seriously trying to upgrade 2C. They know Strome or Copp aren't the answer. Throwing Chytil in that spot and hoping it works is like throwing spaghetti against the wall and hoping it sticks.

Staple chiming in with an article. Says Strome and Copp are goners. Mentions Kadri looking for a 7 x 7 deal. Trocheck may take less than Copp & Strome and might be the Rangers best option. No interest from NYR in Giroux or Stastny. JT Miller basically in the same boat as Kadri considering what theyd have to give up to acquire him/make the money work.
wonder what Trochek would take? Have him as our 2c/3c. Keep the kid line together to start the season. Guy will put up easy 60 points here. Not saying I would overpay for him just an interesting option if deal is fair.

I mean...whatever. He had covid complications and was tasked with breaking a rookie into the league. it's not worth dwelling over in the end

It points to poor scouting, if a slow footed dman like Nemeth was what they were looking for thats an issue

Our 5 on 5 needs to be better and thats mostly gotta come from our top 9, our 2c spot needs to be good and the kids need to build off a solid playoff. I think adding Kravtsov, Blais and hopefully a good 2c and a decent 6th dman will help make us better.

Let's be honest whoever our 6th dman is gonna suck. Unless they give Jones a true chance for that spot but not holding my breath

i agree, just like i dont buy people claiming they will look for some sort of buy low mystery box center for 2c, we already have that type of player as our current 3c in chytil. a contending team doesnt go into a season with two of those types of centers in their top 9

Agreed. But to this point, I’m not sure they have the cap flexibility or youth progression to be better than last year’s playoff team/roster. They kind of have to hope for the best this upcoming year, and wait to make a big move the following year instead. Presumably, after one more season, the Rangers should have a much clearer answer on the following players in terms of cost and worth to organization moving forward: Kakko, Chytil, Lafreniere, Miller, and Kravtsov. Then they can cement the necessary cap around the players they keep, and work with the free space left to make their moves.

With that said, they still need to keep their eyes and ears open for potential trades for long term pieces (i.e., PLD).

Staple says closer to 5M AAV and less years than the others.

He is a Pittsburgh native, but he also had his best years under Gallant and may look at the Rangers as a much better bet to win a Cup than the Penguins. Not a terrible option. I think hes a better player then both Strome and Copp.

If he can stay healthy he is gonna have either Panarin or Lafreniere as one of his wingers. He would be a true center vs. Copp who obviously Gallant did not feel was.

thatd be throwing something a little worse than spaghetti at the wall

Yep, standing pat is simply losing ground at this point. It's a major reason why the Isles hit the ceiling they did the past two years.

Hell, Colorado just wont the Cup and is rumored to be in on a bunch of big names. You always have to be looking to improve, especially as teams elsewhere look to tank and give up key assets.

I see a lot of give me Bennett posts. Is he available and why would he be at that cap hit for the next 4 years? What would he cost in a trade?

Signed for 3 more seasons at 4.425. Florida gave up Heineman and a 2nd for him and he’s most definitely increased his value since being traded. RB floated around Nils for him which is a no brainer. I think the cost will be higher.

Trochek made close to 5M. He’s 29 and should get offers in the 6M+ range which makes him a target we should avoid imo.

We've reached the looney bin portion of free agent frenzy. The day before the flood gates open and every agent is calling/texting the "insiders" that Team X is very interested in adding Player Y to their team, so much so that they are willing to pay $Z AAV over 6-7 years. Wait, that team doesn't have cap space? The salary cap is a myth. They'll figure it out.

The Kadri and Miller rumors are so insane. Canucks fans are willing to accept pure garbage from Pittsburgh (Marino+Kapanen+1st) for Miller, but the Rangers need to move Kakko, Lafreniere, or Schneider.

i dont want to get everyone here worked up but i think that all this talk about drury wanting to avoid term is directly related to the brewing situation in toronto.

matthews has 2 years left on his deal, and in the last year has a nmc like zib did. the leafs are going to have to give him a blank check for an extension (which they may not even be able to afford) or they are going to have to trade him next summer. there is no way they can allow him to walk as a ufa in two years. that team just took a goalie from the sens that ottawa PAID the leafs to take from them. that was their answer again for the net. they still have massive issues on the defense. i think this coming season/playoff will dictate what happens with matthews long term and even if they get to the second round i am still very skeptical he will resign there for a variety of reasons. i know everyone points to arizona and his coming home story, but i absolutely think drury has his eye on that entire situation and he wants to be able to make an offer IF the opportunity presents itself.

i could absolutely see dubas being allowed to stay past next summer even if the leafs have issues so that IF they attempt to resign matthews and he pulls a taveras on them and walks as a ufa the leafs org can then fire dubas and blame the entire loss of matthews on him. i truly believe dubas is only there at this point to be the fall guy if this happens bc they have already handed him the keys for years and they can see he is like themla and lousie driving towards the cliff. if matthews walks/leaves then that is over the cliff. if they trade him after his nmc kicks in they wont get an appropriate return bc he can pick his home to resign at, so the trade will be a debacle. the whole situation brewing in toronto has the potential to become a real story over the next 12-24 months and i think drury wants to avoid term so he can he available if the opportunity is there...
This is all pretty logical. Would not surprise me.

If that's what he gets somewhere (and not saying he won't) good for him. We should pass.

He is also one of those guys the Rangers love. Can play pretty much any situation (PP/PK/ES) and gives them some team speed they lack. If the contract is less term than Copp I would be interested. Still prefer Kadri or JT, but Trocheck fits the mold

Trocheck is better than Copp and Strome so I'm not entirely understanding why he would be cheaper.
probably because the Red Wings will overpay for the former and who knows what Strome is getting? Maybe a team like seattle gives him more than 5 million but I am having a hard time seeing a middle of the road team or contender giving him more than that.

The Rangers top options are probably Trochek and Copp. They will check in with Malkin and Kadri I'm sure. I'm also sure they will be listening for any center who may be made available by teams looking to shed cap space.

Drury is in a pretty nice position though. If everything above falls through, he could very easily sign a couple of guys like Domi and Rask or Rask and Larsson and go into the season with more flexibility and an improved 2-way supporting cast and continue monitoring moving forward. This also goes for someone like Dylan Strome or Colin White as well.

There are guys on the market who would probably be chomping at the bit to sign a 1-2 year deal with the Rangers to play with this group of wingers to either build or rebuild their value who could be stop-gaps here.

I'm not saying they would be perfect, but there are back-up options which may be intriguing if others price themselves out.
