Wait a minute, people want to hand out a seven year contract right after Stepan's six year contract was lousy after two years and he was moved? No thanks.

If I was Mika, I wouldn't touch the Johnson contract. Johnson is destined to be the 2nd line center. Zibanajad is being counted on to be number one here.

I'm OK in the neighborhood of the Brassard model ($5MM X 5) or the Kreider contract ($4.6MM X 4) I'll pass on longer term and take my chances.

It didn't get lousy. Stepan was moved to make room for Shattenkirk. Gorton had a plan. Shatty didn't just fall into our laps, I believe there was something worked out prior to July 1.

5 years is my max for every player not named McDavid.

That may have been our hope but the deal wasn't even fully agreed upon when Weekes announced it according to Shattys interview that day.

Eh, 7 year contract would end at 30 which is a good spot for the Rangers. Lock him up through his prime years at a reasonable cap hit

It's not a bad idea but thy always have the potential to bite you in the ass if the players seems still not established.

It's always worth considering whether it's a good thing to buy out some UFA years depending on the price to do so rather than sign them right up to the UFA age and gamble on either replacing them or giving them another big contract.

RE: Hayes, he really just needs to simplify his game a bit. He really really wants to play the whole "slow things down control the puck look for the amazing play all the time" style but it really falls apart in the playoffs especially when teams are quicker to pressure hard to force turnovers. He needs to learn when to push the play and when to pull up, rather than always pulling up and always trying to hold the puck. A whole lot of his problems would go away if he just stopped trying to do everything with the puck.

This post reflects my own feelings. Lately, people have been discussing the advantages of buying out UFA years. But for me, the decision is not so simple...especially considering it creates a higher AAV, and those years you are buying out are typically not "prime" playing years.

To me, it's more of a gamble than people make it out to be.

Many are clamouring for a trade sending Holden plus something more to Trontah for Bozak to get an amicable stopgap C. Not a bad idea - however...
... Bozak has a cap hit of $4,2 M this year
Holden has a hit of $1,65 M
Difference is $2,55 M
We have $7,475 M left in space with Zib left to sign
Lets say we give Zib $5,4 M
2 M in space
800 k to operate team
1,2 M in space
So we either need to have Toronto retain ~1,35 M on Bozak (will cost us dearly as we are dealing with Lou), move more player(s) or use a 2nd buyout Marc Staal if this were to come to fruition.
I do not see it...

How do you imagine Mika gets 5.4?

Also, cap friendly has us at 8.4 project cap space - unless that is wrong? Or I am misreading?

I hade Bear Gloves on the team (but then I am assuming that Holden is dealt but that capspace is discussed Seperately elsewhere) as the 7D, which we will need and Carry.
That adds $925.000 to the cap
If Mika signs a longer deal he will get around $5,4 M (somewhere Kreider and Stepan). At least that is what I think. Time will tell.

Tyler Johnson has produced at a better pace, got a lot of UFA years bought out, and carries a cap hit of 5 million though.

I agree that the Johnson contract is interesting and team friendly. If it can be used as a benchmark for the Zib contract - then all the better. But I do not think the Zib camp will settle for this in a long term deal. They want and are asking for more as it stands. If Gorton gets this done at under 5 for 5 years plus, he has really done a good Job. Will be very interesting to follow this the next few weeks. If I am wrong here - I will be happy though.

Taking Zibanejad to 30 years old isn't a problem. The Stepan contract worked out very well. The Rangers turned him into Andersson + DeAngelo. That's a contract I'd give out every year if that happened all the time.

7 x 5. I'd offer it

Quick look at the salary cap situation without Mika signed:

Lines are random. Nieves chosen as 13F because Cat and Jensen are still unsigned.

There will be a lot of turnover after the season ends, me thinks (10 or 11 contracts will expire at end of 2017-18 season).

Holy crap, I just realized Stalberg is a UFA. Sign that ****er up right now.

They should be looking at a couple of veteran depth forwards:

Winnik
Stalberg
White
Chiasson

Theoretically, if Brian Campbell would sign a 1 year deal for the same amount he signed for in Chicago last year, the Rangers could buy out Staal, sign Campbell and save $$ this season. The guy is a shot suppression machine
