Prediction: Rangers become a top 10 Corsi team with the changes to the defense but Lundqvist and Pavelec both post sub .910 save percentages for the season and the Rangers miss the playoffs.

I understand what you're saying, but it's not as big of an issue as you think it is. Stepan was a 46.4% offensive zone power play faceoff man last year. Meaning every 100 faceoffs, he's going to win 46 and lose 54. That's only 8 more times that we're chasing the puck and losing 15-20 seconds of PP time than the amount of times he's winning the draw, and the Rangers have control.

120-160 seconds of PP time lost every 100 offensive zone PP faceoffs. One full power play every 100 faceoffs. Stepan took 140 ozone pp faceoffs last year. 1.4 powerplays lost over the course of the season due to chasing pucks. On a PP that operated at a 20.2% clip last year, that's .28 goals lost over the entire season.

That's way oversimplified. As if it ever turns into just 15 seconds. Half our powerplays we lose the initial draw and can't get set up for the whole first minute.

The Rangers are great at keeping the puck on their sticks during the PP, not so much at entering the zone.

I would bet almost anything that Henrik has a better SV% this upcoming season than he did last season.

I would like to go there :)

I dont post here often, but I log into this forum almost every day. And you are among my favourite posters, along with RB, ODC, Ola and more. Your trade proposals can sometimes be.... creative :) .... they might be unrealistic, but they gives food for thought. I rather read them than several pages about faceoffs

I'm not against trading McD. Some people are acting like we're gonna give him away. But if we can upgrade our 1C with a young up and coming player like MacK, Draisatl we have to explore it.

Thank you for the kind words.

Obviously, McD should not be given away.

The question for me is what is the max possible return, and which partner(s) are most likely to provide that.

Max return of best quality assets more important than best possible C candidate and less total return, for example, IMO. If it DOES HAPPEN to be a C, fine, but want best bang for buck.

I doubt Dallas moves that guy they drafted 3OA but maybe there is a package there?
That would be one look to consider.

It has no correlation to possession metrics.

And that's fine. You need players who can win a BIG faceoff (something that Zibanejad is pretty good at actually). The better their faceoff percentage, the more likely they are to win that critical draw.

It's one of those things that's a misapplication of statistics. Overall possession is not the reason we care about faceoffs.

Yeah, stating that it doesn't matter at all is so dumb.

A face off has (at least) four out comes really, win/loss/toss up/non-loss back to a D. All are different techniques with different results. Some are extremely good at going in and taking away the other center and prevent him from winning it clean, but never wins it clean themselves. Some are really good at going for the win but still rarely lose it clean, and so forth and so forth.

Championships have been won on face offs, no doubt. It can definitely wear a team down if they are run over in the circle in a 7 game series. It has an impact.

But sure the everyday FOs doesn't have a big impact against how they are measured in the NHL stats, most draws are basically toss ups that results in ongoing battles for the puck where pressure is constantly put on it. But it definitely has an impact in real life, like if a C is just killed by a C on the other team, you must change the match-up, you get the wrong players on the ice etc.

New York Rangers’ 2017-18 season hanging on one transaction

http://bluelinestation.com/2017/07/10/new-york-rangers-2017-18-season-hanging-one-transaction/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Jeff Gorton failing to acquire a top six center opens up a concerning can of worms. Suddenly Miller must play center. Suddenly Mika Zibanejad must immediately play on the top line, rather than being eased into the role. The pressure on Kevin Hayes reaches an all-time high.

This is what I've been preaching the entire offseason. I know everyone on here has heard from me adnausium about this, but I feel it's that vital.

"Failing to acquire a top six center" lol that's some terrible writing and that person should be ashamed

It's July 10th. Gorton hasn't failed anything yet this off-season lmao

I was going to say the same thing, but then I read the article and it's more of an "if he doesn't acquire one" type of thing.

Then again, the writer also says that signing Shattenkirk means the Rangers aren't rebuilding on the fly, which is nonsense.

thats why they are professional athletes.. its the changing of the guard, their time to shine.. i think they can handle it and its a good thing, plus there is time still this offseason to make moves..

Regarding Bozak

Many are clamouring for a trade sending Holden plus something more to Trontah for Bozak to get an amicable stopgap C. Not a bad idea - however...
... Bozak has a cap hit of $4,2 M this year
Holden has a hit of $1,65 M
Difference is $2,55 M
We have $7,475 M left in space with Zib left to sign
Lets say we give Zib $5,4 M
2 M in space
800 k to operate team
1,2 M in space
So we either need to have Toronto retain ~1,35 M on Bozak (will cost us dearly as we are dealing with Lou), move more player(s) or use a 2nd buyout Marc Staal if this were to come to fruition.
I do not see it...

Tyler Johnson signs 7 years 5 million AAV.

I think this helps us more than it does Zib. Johnson's career ppg is .69 with a career high 77 points whereas Zibanejad is closer to .56 with a career high of 51 points. Johnson is two years older than Zib and they had nearly identical seasons in regards to ppg.

I would be ecstatic if we could sign Mika to a similar type of deal. 7 x 5-5.5 would be a huge success for Gorton.
