Seems the NYR PR team has done A LOT with DeAngelo the last few weeks. Interviews, QA's, showing up at the kids camp...seems like they may be working on improving his image within the fanbase.

So what exactly does our defense look like?

Smith Shattenkirk
Beargloves DeAngelo
Graves Holden

That would probably be the worst defense in the NHL. Bar-none. We aren't trading McDonagh OR Skjei, forget about trading the both of them in the same trade.
be honest that is in a vacuum.
Yes, we moved 2 best LD pieces, in exchange got a top F, lots of picks
thinned things, otherwise unacceptably I agree; but not if we got these assets we can use as needed

and I disagree that the above would be the worst
In fact, I am optimistic that we can get RD help and jettison Holden

What you say is valid as to a snapshot
What I am talking about is a moving picture
we do not stand still on the guys I noted, we move onward

What is the point of these picks? The draft is a crapshoot after the 1st round. Either way it's 3 picks outside the 1st.
It disagree it is a complete crapshoot.
Yes, gems can be had in any round.
That said, I would expect percentage wise, the better the pick, the more likely it succeeds at NHL level than a lesser counterpart.
Esp if the GM picking is, and has a supporting braintrust, particularly good at it.

The Slavin deal should be the model set for Skjei. I'd attempt to lock him into that deal right now. Extension would go into effect next year. You'd be buying out UFA years and he'd become very cost friendly.

Hopefully we do not bridge deal him. Would be awful for the team moving forward.
I would use current cap reserve to drive down price and annual salary cost/cap hit for multiple key guys, like Zib, Miller, Hayes

we have a coupla years before dealing w/Skjei
by that time, Hank's 8m is off the roster
that's your $ for long term Skjei

A local Italian kid, I don't think there's much that needs to be done

Josi deal.

Rangers shouldn't be afraid of the early extension with good character guys. They'll get burnt later if they don't

If I'm trading both Skjei and McD, I want a McDavid/Matthews type talent coming back.

Otherwise, HELL NO. Lmao.

Soderberg is 31, signed until he's 34 for almost 5M and had 14 points in 80 games last season. I don't want to hear it about how bad the Avs were. 14 points in 80 games. for 5M.

Staal for Soderberg literally does nothing for the Rangers. Staal can be traded after his NMC expires this year and the Rangers are willing to retain some salary to make it happen.

10000% this.

Guys putting up 30-40 more points by changing teams is such an HF fantasy.

Kind of like how Kessel was going to hit 100 points going from a **** Toronto team to a stacked Pittsburgh team. Two years on a Cup winner, and he's still yet to even sniff his career high in goals or points that he set on terrible Leafs teams.

I mean could numbers go up? certainly.. but Hayes last year as our 3rd line center had 50 points, I don't see Soderberg's numbers jumping by damn near 40 points just because he left the Avs.

Middling players could certainly see some movement based on their team.

Elite players (like Kessel) and players who suck (like Soderberg) generally go about their business regardless of what's going on.

Hell even Derek Stepan played on Rangers teams that couldn't score ('13 and most of '14) and Rangers teams that crapped goals ('15, '16, '17) and his numbers stayed very consistent.

yup, precisely my point, IMO the same reason I wouldn't trade a ton for Duchene. I don't think just going to another team gets him back to almost a PPG player. Have the Avs sucked the last 3 years as bad as they did last year? maybe he just peaked early.

The question with Soderberg is whether or not last season was representative of his production now or if it was just an absurdly bad down season.

It is NOT a question of whether or not it was because of the Avs.

Dubinsky never before or after had a season like his 11-12 season with us... for example.

The Rangers would be smart to sign Skjei to a long term contract. Skjei will be 3 years away from group III next summer. He could theoretically sign a 2 year bridge contract because the Rangers don't have much cap flexibility. They have 10 players signed for 18-19 for $46.3M. Add $5M ballpark number for Zibanejad. $51.3M for 11 players. Say the cap goes up $2M again. $77M. $25.7M. Skjei. Arbitration eligible. Miller. Arbitration eligible. Hayes. Arbitration eligible. One year away from group III. Vesey. Arbitration eligible. Two years away. Miller is also two years away next summer. If they are planning to re-sign McDonagh, budget $7M-$7.5M for him in 19-20. The Rangers could have signed Stepan to a long term contract in 2013. They would have gotten Stepan under contract for less than $6.5M. He also wasn't arbitration eligible. McDonagh got 6 years and $4.7M. He was arbitration eligible. Buchnevich is arbitration eligible in 2019. If he can not fall down when he has the puck and is a productive player,he will be in line for a decent bridge contract like Kuznetsov or a big long term contract with the KHL factor. The Girardi buyout goes up to $3.6M in 17-18 and 18-19. Very tight.

Skjei, Miller, Hayes and Vesey will all be arbitration eligible would be another way to say that.
