We were atrocious 5v5 all season.. Please look at the big picture. PPP are great. Please don't tell me how many points <insert PP specialist here> had
You still need to drive play more than 30% of the time. Zibs line ended up with 35% xG in the playoffs. That is abhorrent.
Panarin line not that much better at 40%.
Why isn't 5v5 working with all this talent? Because the entire system relies on players initiating and attacking. It's why the kid line was effective..... It's why there needs to be a complete recalibration with the roster. We have the winning pieces IMO... it needs some tweaking though.
The issue is 1. coaching X & O's 2. approach (outdated) 3. The offensive kids not being mature yet to dominate consistently, which they will be in 2-3 years time.
Dont use the kids as props for the big money stars. Stop pandering to the stars. Play a team game. The 5v5 issues have to be fixed with good coaching.
Panarin - Zibenijad/Chytil- Kravtsov/KK
Laf -Chytil/Zib - Kakko/Kravtsov
Kreider - XX - Motte (checking line)
Hunt - Goodrow - Blais
Rantanen and Landeskog play C much of the time when their team is on D, while playing wingers in the o-zone. Landeskog also takes a lot of draws. Rantanen played first line RW, 2nd line C, 3rd line RW at various points on the playoffs.
The point I'm making is that Colorado played to a system (X & O's), with players trained in that system and used interchangeably within that system, and hand picked to fit that system (approach), rather than looking to the same old, same old, tragically same old, to somehow do the magic.
Or we could use Tampa's ability to play vastly different styles depending on the situation as an example of dynamic X and O ability built up over time and with purpose.
I think/hope Drury has a similar vision but he can't get there over 1 summer with the odds and ends we have now. In 2-3 years when the kids are mature and Othmann/Cuylle hopefully have stepped up this team will be closer to that.
Accept that the team is in transition and in a growth phase. Doesn't mean that tweaks cannot be made but those tweaks/improvements can't create blocks for the future.
The alternative is the same old tired "Go for the Latest Shiny Thing" and jam it down the roster regardless of fit beyond stereotype ("2C") chemistry, consequences or vision.
Can Drury balance the approach within staying true to his (presumed) vision and the traditional approach of the impatient NYR market?
