I just don't know if I really buy into the PDL smoke.

The word has always been he wants to go home to MTL and play. Would Drury really pony up just to get him on a 2 year deal to watch him bolt in 24 months?

No. Absolutely not.

This was not something I expected to read today or any other day for that matter... "a player & a high pick for Geogiev"

Not sure they could be any more out to lunch on this.

Pretty much I will take anything at this point
Later picks to gain some back likely

my gut says tampa trades kilhorn to detroit to open space. he will cost them an asset to move. stevie wants a vet with winning pedegree that will be around for awhile to add stability to their team. this is reported in multiple places. kilhorn is the perfect subtraction from tampa to make their cap stuff work. if he goes then i would expect the to resign palat and make a strong push to resign paul.

What has happened since Drury took over that makes us think he's prioritizing the long-term?

I do believe that they're trying to create a buzz about other targets so the in-house options will take less. But I absolutely think he wouldn't balk at an opportunity because the player would only be here for two years.

Traded Buchnevich instead of renting him for the year. There was cap space for a 1 year deal.

one funny thing to notice is all the talk about chytil right now is basically the exact same conversations had at this time last year, that he is going to breakout as a 2c next year, its his time, etc.

if he didnt have the spurt of quality play in the playoffs then would we be replaying the same conversation as last year? overall his season was a complete disappointment, he salvaged a lot in the playoffs, but i am still not hitching my wagon to that horse as the 2c here long term just to be having this same convo again next year

Daly on NHL radio. Projecting escrow balance to be paid off in full following 2024-25 season, meaning for the next two years $1M increases, and then he expects the cap to grow by “multiple million dollars” afterwards.

OK, so one move where he picked up a 2nd round pick and a much worse player with one more year before UFA status which opened up a hole in the top-six that he paid (predictably) a lot more to fill it at the deadline than he got to create it.

Wait so he expects the cap to go up for the 24-25 season or 25-26? If the balance is paid off after 24-25 it would seem to be the latter, which would suck.

RIght but he did have that quality level of play in the playoffs. He played 10+ games at a high level of play, in the toughest environment where most players play worse not better.
You cant just ignore that performance because it doesn't fit the narrative.

Does that mean it’s going to rain the next few days?

If its paid off at the end of 24, then for 25-26 it shoots up significantly. Currently the NHL And PA are doing 2 things to repay, They've got a high escrow, and their keeping the cap low. The escrow is eventually going to go to 0 as per negotiations with the PA.
So because theyre gonna start lowering the escrow it'll take a little longer to get the outstanding balance to zero.

But also once the PA has paid back all the funds, the cap space wont just shoot up "millions" it should shoot up somewhere between 10-15m (based on this years earnings), if not significantly more.

We were 2 wins from the Stanley Cup Final this year. The organization cant be scared to make a move because of the cap implications down the road. Worrying about Kakko/Chytil/Kravtstov's upcoming extensions, when theyve done next nothing to earn significant raises, is a waste of time imo.

If you can get Dubois for Chytil+Lundkvist & and a protected 2023 1st, make the deal. Zibanejad/Dubois down the middle long term is a significant upgrade over Strome/Copp/Chytil or any other in house option the Rangers could trot out there. Its possible to acquire PLD, extend him for 7 mil AAV, and re-sign Motte to an extension at around 2m AAV this summer, provided they offload Nemeth somehow.

Panarin-Dubois-Kakko
Blais-Goodrow-Kravtsov
Motte-Rydahl-Hunt/Reaves

If the team wants to upgrade at 3C at next years deadline, theyll most likely use Kakko or Kravtsov to make such a deal. Next summer, Blais/Reaves will be replaced by Othmann/Cuylle/(potentially) Berard, and Laf & K'Andre will be bridged. The cap will also jump an extra mil and we'll no longer have any buyout money on the books. By the time the Rangers are really up against it cap-wise, the rumored "10mil jump" should be here.

If i can make it work on an excel spreadsheet, I dont think the professionals in the NYR organization should be overly concerned about it.

I remember Neil Smith talking about his philosophy regarding trading and acquiring players. He was big on staying away (trade for) or sign (long term) any player that he and the org felt were injury prone. He said something to the effect (paraphrasing here) that all the talent in the world is useless if you can't make it past warm ups.

Wonder if Chytils numerous ouchies are a concern for Chris?

That said , haven't decided personally on a Chytil or KK for PLD type trade yet. DEF not for 2 years. Long term, l'm intrigued.

Gonna be a fun month ahead fo sho.

It’s a simple this or that.

Dubois 7M x 2 years = no
Dubois 7M x 7 years = yes

I don’t want to actively seek a trade of Kakko. Just want to establish that upfront.

That said, what do you see in his game that leads you to believe a breakout is coming soon?

His shot is below average.

He’s not fast.

He lacks the confidence to take the puck to the net.

How does he get over the hump at this level?
He's strong on the puck, strong on the boards, he's one of thr team's best possession players, he's one of the team's best defensive forwards.

He is 21.
