Copp’s negotiation is going to be an interesting one. Before coming to NY, he was trending for a season that was slightly under his last. His stats inflate in NY and he played well on that Panarin line mostly on the wing. I’m sure Drury will bring this up in negotiation. For all of the comparisons to Danault last offseason, Danault was and is clearly a center.
It’s my opinion that Copp would be a very valuable piece to this team moving forward. His playing style and areas of the game he is good at fill quite a few holes on the roster. I think he could settle in to a 50-55 point 2-way center who plays in all situations which is exactly what this organization needs moving forward.
I can understand the concerns for next offseason with Miller, Lafreniere and Chytil as RFA’s but with the chance to really cement the top-9 for the foreseeable future by bringing back Copp is too enticing. If it means bridging or or two of the young guys next year, so be it. There’s nothing that says any or all of them want a long term deal right away with the cap increasing so soon after their deals get signed.
There is nothing that says Chytil or Kaako or Lindgren wouldn’t be available for the right price should they take a step back or stagnate next season. Any one of those guys moving would help the situation and as we have seen with young players they’re development is not guaranteed.
Solidify the top-6 and fill a gaping hole at center with a guy who excels where it’s needed. Bridge where necessary or look to make the moves necessary, should developments stagnate, to make it work next offseason as needed. Kreider and Trouba are on the table the offseason after that.
