You must get the puck up ice. To some extent, of course a bit in more broader terms, the center is the guy that ties together the Ds with the forwards.

Does a center have to be a playmaker? A line must have playmaking ability. If you have Johnny Hockey at LW and Kane at RW, you can of course get by with less playmaking ability at center.

You will find a lot more wingers who are like 30+30 players over several years than centers who score as many goals as they have assists. Honestly, I can’t think of many centers ever who were closer to 1:1 between goals and assists ever. There is a reason for that. A line must have a certain amount of play making ability and it’s a lot better to have that at center ice than on the wing. The center is just much harder to take away ice from. You can just play a winger much more closely as a D. Also as a reason for the “centers wins you cups” mantra.

There may not be a rule that the center “must” be the playmaker — but honestly, there are reasons for why history looks like it does.
off the top of my head

Stamkos 481g/491a
Matthews 259g/198a
Aho is 182g/219a

All three are high end centers.
They just happen to be good goal scorers and/or play with high end playmakers who give them good set ups.
Which is exactly what we'd like to expect from Kakko and Laf.

I cant wait for this offseason to be over already and its really just starting. Just to see all the wasted panic, anxiety, and negativity be just that, wasted energy. The rhetoric about the cap this, the cap that, we really cant do this or that, we can only target this guy or that guy. And yet come September I guarantee we will have a quality roster gearing up for another deep playoff run.

If the Rangers ever won the Cup you’d have people in here literally moments after the gear is tossed into the air crying about extensions due and guys they can’t bring back. It’s just the nature of New York sports fans.

Friedman says it could be down to Quinn and Montgomery in Boston.

Imagine that even being a debate?

If Montgomery comes in they are a playoff team. Quinn=lottery and Pastrnak trade at the deadline

I think motte & Vatrano want to stay - Copp seemed miffed at not playing center - Imo he’s gone .

Copp is like his buddy Trouba. Good player, wants to get paid. I’d take him back on a 5x5 but I wouldn’t go any higher

hornqvist is cooked. he was down to under 13 mins a game this year, had 28pt in 65 games, and he is 36 next year. he isnt the player your remember from pitt and he wouldnt be able to keep up in a top 6 role. he also has a 5.3m cap hit next year.
Yeah. Probably right. I wouldn’t want him at $5.3m either way. Rangers just can’t afford that. But I’d still like him if he were to get bought out. But yeah, probably not a top six option at this point.

If perry did any of the shit i watched him do on this playoff run, I'd loathe him.
And also that love affair with avery is the dumbest thing ever. Dude was a shit as well, only he tried to be cute about it.
I liked Avery with the Rangers. Since he retired we see he’s not a good human. But at the time I must admit I enjoyed him. He was a rat but he wasn’t a dangerous player. And he had some good skill. But yeah, I’m hindsight…yuck. And also, no Perry for me either. I don’t think he’s particularly bad but his game is like 90% cynical gimmicks at this point. I don’t want to watch that.

Avery had some borderline hits. But some of the things he said off the ice even while playing.

But Perry is all about cheap shots, running the goalie and injuring people...
Thats not acceptable.

Copp’s negotiation is going to be an interesting one. Before coming to NY, he was trending for a season that was slightly under his last. His stats inflate in NY and he played well on that Panarin line mostly on the wing. I’m sure Drury will bring this up in negotiation. For all of the comparisons to Danault last offseason, Danault was and is clearly a center.

It’s my opinion that Copp would be a very valuable piece to this team moving forward. His playing style and areas of the game he is good at fill quite a few holes on the roster. I think he could settle in to a 50-55 point 2-way center who plays in all situations which is exactly what this organization needs moving forward.

I can understand the concerns for next offseason with Miller, Lafreniere and Chytil as RFA’s but with the chance to really cement the top-9 for the foreseeable future by bringing back Copp is too enticing. If it means bridging or or two of the young guys next year, so be it. There’s nothing that says any or all of them want a long term deal right away with the cap increasing so soon after their deals get signed.

There is nothing that says Chytil or Kaako or Lindgren wouldn’t be available for the right price should they take a step back or stagnate next season. Any one of those guys moving would help the situation and as we have seen with young players they’re development is not guaranteed.

Solidify the top-6 and fill a gaping hole at center with a guy who excels where it’s needed. Bridge where necessary or look to make the moves necessary, should developments stagnate, to make it work next offseason as needed. Kreider and Trouba are on the table the offseason after that.

Ready to hear we're moving Kakko to make room for our lord & savior

If you can get Copp at a good price the numbers do work. You can possibly afford to extend 1 or 2 of the kids long term next season as well. That would mean clearing Nemeth at the very least, maybe Goodrow depending on how things play out. The other angle here, as long as the trade restrictions are minimal if you sign Copp for 5 years it doesn't mean he needs to be here for 5 years. It's entirely possible that a couple years down the line they need to shed cap and he's the odd man out. He should be a plenty movable player if it comes down to that

Yea, I’m sure Vince has very important news on Kakko and Krav. Better than Mollie writing stories around quotes from break up day two weeks ago I guess?

It’s very odd that Strome hasn’t made the decision on hip surgery yet. That will impact his market value immensely. Monahan’s career is over and he’s unmovable because of hip surgery.

I don’t want him back, but they could pull some LTIR shenanigans with him next year
