I don't think the Rangers will make any waiver claims, unless a trade is somehow involved.

Once Gauthier and Tinordi clear or get plucked, they'll have a little less than 200K in cap space.

Well, unless they put Blais on IR. That would give them the roster spot for a claim. I don't see it happening, but the option is there.
Putting him on IR would open a roster spot, but we still wouldn't have the cap space to add a player.

If we put him on LTIR, we could then add someone, but we wouldn't be banking any cap space and that player, or someone else, would have to be waived as soon as Blais is back.

I understand that Trouba is there because there's no RH shots but jesus christ it'll be miserable to watch.

I think an all LH PP2 unit might work well as a mirror version of our PP1 setup. On PP1, Panarin sets up on the RW boards and he and Fox attempt to set up Zibanejad for the shot. On PP2, we could have Lafreniere with the puck on the LW boards and he and Jones could work together to open up passing lanes for quick shots from the bumper and RW spots. Of course, no one on PP2 has the lethal one-timer that Zibanejad has, so the opportunities would have to be more distributed.

But instead, we have Trouba at the point.

Yeah but how much time is that unit really going to get? Maybe 40 secs the most? You know the Top unit will get at least a min and change.
what does that have to do with anything? I still want a better chance to score for that unit than to not score.

especially since if you're going for a conservative "just keep it alive" set-up for that unit, trouba is the worst d-man you can play there since he's so slow.

People act like most teams 3rd liners produce 60 points. Goodrow and Blais project to score ~30-40 points each when given ice time commensurate with a 3rd liner and if they stay healthy. That's perfectly reasonable for 3rd line production especially when they bring other things outside of scoring (Goodrow's versatility and PKing and Blais' physicality).

Also, for Blais, don't be surprised when he starts the season slow and picks up steam as he goes. He missed pretty much the entire season last year with a major injury
Blais is more like to miss 30-40 games with an injury than he is to score 30-40 points. That’s just fantasy land.

It would take Blais 130 games to score 40 points. And it would take him 6 seasons to play 130 games.

I don't hate Trouba on the PP. He has one of the best shots of any d-man on the team from the point and he likes to shoot which can be an issue with teams with a lot of skilled players. In saying that, he shouldn't be on the top of the Diamond, he should be in the shooters spot off to the left so he can one-time shots. If Kravtsov and Lafreniere rotate around and end up playing the left side point a bit I could see that working but what they should avoid is Trouba being the primary distributor of the puck up there.

Trouba has played 9 years and has 9 5v4 goals in 960 minutes. You probably do not want a PP that revolves around him shooting.

in the modern NHL PP scheme heavy point shots are not effective. there's a reason the best defensemen from the point are known for their shot variety, ability to open passing lanes, and shot passes. PKers have gotten really good at blocking and closing the slot, making those kind of shots pretty useless. the fact that trouba shoots a lot despite him being bad at the aformentioned PP skills is a big reason PPs he runs are so ineffective.

He has the hardest shot, not the best. He misses the net more often than not
