A terrific read on how St. Louis bridged Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas and then signed them to long term extensions. Lots of good learning here. Time for management to gather more information and insight on timing long term contracts to the prime arc of a players career. It’s not just as simple as just signing a player to a long term contract

Nils also missed pretty much the last two months + playoffs last season with what was rumored to be anything from a separated shoulder to a concussion. Low value.
The Rangers reportedly have an offer of a high second round pick for Lundkvist. Arthur Staple reported that Information a few weeks ago. Buffalo and Seattle have multiple 2nd round picks in June. Trading Lundkvist for a similar prospect isn't easy. Trading Lundkvist for a young player trying to make the NHL who will require waivers this season or next season is risky. Take the high 2nd. Lundkvist was taken 28th overall. He wasn't a top 10 pick.

The Rangers will probably be active at the trade deadline. They don't have much cap flexibility. Acquiring a rental will cost them a 1st or 2nd round pick. Adding a high 2nd round pick gives them the flexibility to move a pick and still have multiple picks in the first two rounds for the 2023 draft.

TB traded DeAngelo to Phoenix for a high 2nd round pick when they realized Tony will continue to have issues. TB took Hajek with that pick.

Perhaps Drury is trying to squeeze another pick out of the trade in addition to the high second. The rumor Staple reported of a high 2nd round pick for Lundkvist is not a bad offer.

Buffalo should not be one of the worst teams in the NHL. The Sabres have so many quality young players. They could be good or bad. The Sabres do have the Flyers 2nd and the Vegas 2nd. Seattle has Winnipeg's and Toronto's 2nd in addition to their own 2nd.

The Rangers receive the higher pick of the Buffalo or Philadelphia pick.

The Rangers receive Seattle's pick.

Lundkvist for Dellandrea or Valeno. Both of those players are one year away from requiring waivers. Will that player make the Rangers roster?

The dream would be to get (2) 2nds for Nils. Because even though he was a late 1st round pick, he still has a lot of attractive value and that being he is a young RHD that is a pretty good with the puck on his stick. Being a RHD alone is good value. But ultimately, I think Drury settles for a 2nd and hopefully a 3rd round pick. That or the Rangers call Dallas up and trade Lundkvist + for Mavrik Bourque. Just don’t know what the + would be.

All great points as usual RB.

The Rangers should take the 2nd and move along - teams are probably reluctant to trade high (1st/2nd) in this draft in particular because of its strength - some saying near 2003 levels. No reason not to try, but pull the trigger before the deal is off the table. Or, pull a Kravtsov and let him stew somewhere else until he's ready to follow the direction the team needs him to. That's a much worse option.

My guess is that the trade is going to be expanded. Rangers could use cap room.

Evaluate the progress of the Cullyes, Othmanns, Jones's, Robertsons of the world.

A high second for Nils and add a fourth of fifth for a Gauthier or Hunt or Hajek? Take back a 7th D? What if Reaves was hanging out with Ric Flair too much this summer and didn't accomplish his mission of getting slimmer and quicker? Send him to Dallas or SJ or Buffalo as part of the package?

Rookie games don't mean anything but what if Cullye and Othmann are completely overmatched in main camp? Vesey becomes a reality. Need a little cap room to sign him. A fourth line with some combo of Goodrow/Reaves/Hunt/Vessey/Carpenter sounds pretty awful.

The Rangers are middle of the pack as far as cap room is concerned

If Reaves were going anywhere, he would've been gone already. Maybe he learned to "WOOOOOOOO" at least. If the Rangers were entertaining that option, they would've signed Motte and found a partner for Reaves (which, in and of itself, is probably difficult given the cap).

Goodrow Vesey Carpenter would actually be a pretty physical and tough to deal with 4th line. Vesey is a decent option on the 4th.

Do we expect Dryden Hunt to have improved from last season and if so, by how much?

He is a late bloomer who hasn’t cut any corners which have given him a pretty steady progress rate. He played well last season and while of course falling a little short for the bigger roles he got, if he can have more confidence this year, be a little smarter with the puck, finish a little better — he isn’t far off.
You serious? Hunt brings nothing to the table. If you can’t score you need to do the little things and he doesn’t do the little things.

As for trades, two sources said that the Rangers have been offered a second-round pick for Lundkvist, an offer that’s been on the table since Claude Lemieux, Lundkvist’s agent, requested a trade before the deadline in March. It’s believed to be a high-second rounder — it was likely for the June draft from a team at the bottom of last season’s standings — and the sources indicated the offer of a second for next year’s draft is still good.

But Drury, as he was with Vitali Kravtsov, is not willing to let go of one of the Rangers’ top prospects for another lottery ticket just yet. That may change in two weeks when Lundkvist likely stays home, but for now, the Rangers are believed to be seeking a young player in return.

The difference is the Rangers can use Kravtsov. The Rangers don't have a spot for Lundkvist. Not this season or next season. Drury hired Lilley and an entire new scouting staff. They can pick their player with the selection or they can trade it at the deadline.

The Rangers traded a 2nd in 2019 and a conditional 3rd in 2020 which became a 2nd if Fox played 30 NHL games in 19-20.

A 2nd in 2023 and conditional 3rd in 2024 which can become a 2nd based on how many NHL games Lundkvist plays over the next two NHL seasons.

He's a dime a dozen 4th liner. He's rated fine. People just prefer he wasn't on the team because GG has an obsession to use him on the 2nd line at times.
Hunt was so out of place on that line.

I distinctly remember two periods of hockey where Hunt seemingly concluded that he wasn't gonna try to one-time any passes; he kept trying to redirect the puck in off his skate.

The fact that he had a huge offensive season in Canadian Juniors is a testament to how unreliable stat watching for prospects can be

Where are the holes on this roster? What do Colorado and Tampa have that we don’t talent-wise? Colorado couldn’t get out of the second round forever until this year. Tampa was known as a bunch of chokers until the covid bubble. In sports you’re never good enough, until one day you are. We are a legitimate Cup contender make no mistake and will be for years to come. Now it’s up to injury luck and playoff randomness. You should try to enjoy it instead of worrying about getting more “young high end centers”. Zibanejad-Trocheck-Chytil-Goodrow are all better than anyone you could reasonably acquire now anyway
But if you can’t brag on the main boards about your 22 year old stud C (while finishing 20 points out of a playoff spot) what’s the point of even living?
