I'm still all about Nieto as a trade deadline acquisition. He was noticeable last night.

The fourth line is going to need some beefing up post-deadline. Carpenter's looked decent so far and it's only been one game, but there hasn't been much synergy without Goodrow in that spot.

We have our own little project in Kravtsov let's figure out where he fits first before handing that spot in the lineup to Zadina.

We have enough forwards with personal space issues.

I just currently have severe doubts with Kravtsov... physically speaking.

Not being ready for NHL hockey, let alone playoff hockey. IMO he gets there in a couple years.... I just don't think we wait that long, especially with Othmann banging on the door.

I think he lands us a nice piece at the TDL.

Stop ducking the question. Simple yes or no. Are the very best players in the draft available at the top of the first round?
I have acknowledged that you have the opportunity draft ONE player who is at the top of the talent list. Now you stop ingnoring the fact that your method then denies that same team a chance at the best player after the first round. Maybe a first round talent other teams missed on that they can get at 33 but NOT at the end of rd 2.

Robertson is literally our only B level defensive prospect. We need to keep all our D in my opinion. The cupboard is bare.
i agree, but i am just saying that would be what the canucks want.

they made it clear last year they want young d and this year their blueline is a tire fire.

I agree, but can't get out of my head the possibility that we give Dallas back their 1st rounder for Pavelski at the deadline.
I would love this, but can't see Dallas falling out of the race to the point of selling 1/3 of their top line. Don't forget, they were no guarantee to make playoffs last year, and didn't trade best D rental on market in Klingberg.

Unless they are absolutely out come TDL, they likely aren't trading Pavelski. And if they are that far out, they'll ask for our 1st because it makes no sense to trade back for theirs when its top 10 protected and would be transferred back to them anyways.

I'd love Pavelski, but it will take Dallas being a bottom 10 team and having 0 first round picks this summer, which I know that just triggered 75% of this board because 1st round picks are apparently more valuable than McDavid here, but Pavelski would be a legit addition in that scenario.

Either way, don't see it as a realistic scenario, as nice as it would be.

I'm telling youguys...when Philly falls out of the Playoff race by TDL, we could do alot worse than JVR + Braun. Braun can play both sides, shores up 3rd pair in case of sturggles, has familiarity with system and roster.

JVR is a vet, physical edge, scoring touch.

And unless JVR blows this season out of the water somehow rediscovering 35 goal potential, this shouldn't be an astronomical cost. If JVR is sitting at 15-20 goals come TDL, the cost should be relatively manageable.

I could be wrong, but the way those conditions were described to me it was my understanding that if this year's draft pick gets returned for being top 10, we will get their 1st the following year no matter what.

we dont need to replace schneider or jones right now. expect the growing pains. the top players on this team need to be better to take pressure off the young kids that are establishing themselves at this level
Agree.

The forwards (everyone) need to commit themselves to a better defensive posture.

Even Kakko who was lights out good defensively has slipped a bit because he smells some points in the water.

But its early in the year and this is one part of the game that most teams struggle with early on. I think with the Rangers in particular, they got off to such a hot start offensively and on the PP you start to feel like you are unstoppable and you collectively veer off into lets put 10 behind them tonight.

They have a really solid set of skaters on this team up front who can all (even Panarin) pitch in better in the zone specifically, getting to the points quicker, taking the body and inside lanes, having an active stick in shooting and passing lanes and really just getting on the inside of pucks and the middle of the ice in general.

This team doesnt block a ton of shots. Its obvious not everyone is Ryan Callahan, but there are other ways to disrupt.

They get turned around too often and its because they are looking to spring out of the zone. They need to be able to separate the two parts of the game and just be more cognizant lower in the zone. It'll help their overall game and transition play because theyll all be doing it in unison.

Would you have proposed this while the Rangers were rebuilding? Aside from our insanely fast rebuild, it takes teams 4+ years to rebuild. I don’t really see the sense in pushing that timeline back further. Some poorer markets may struggle to ever get going again, and before you say that’s not our problem, you know Bettman believes it is.

Jones and Schneider will be fine. Robertson is basically our only D prospect capable of potentially being a consistent top 6 dman, I know it seems backwards to label a B prosect untouchable, but he should be. When we need to shed salary via Lindgren, Robertson is the cost-controlled replacement that allows salary to be shed without replacing via trade or FA.

Othmann showing the way he did in camp and with his style of play makes Kravtsov expendable. I have serious doubts about Kravtsov anyways, Othmann being in system or not.

Like I've said, Blais will need time to get touches in and reacclimated to speed and tempo, but I hope he figures it out because if not that leaves a hole on 3L and ultimately 4C because we all know its Goodrow who moves up, and the 4L is at its best when hes on it. Unforutnate that Hunt, who was a very good 4th liner but a bad 2nd liner for us, was lost while we let Krav and Blais figure it out, but the choice was understandable since there is more invested in them from org, more value in them, more potential in them. They also are basically untradeable from an org standpoint because you'd be selling at lowest value which is last resort.

On the flip, you knew what you got from Hunt every night on 4L. Krav and Blais, if they can't figure it out (one of them should), that leaves 2 massive holes in the lineup. Their value would be low come TDL if they are moved, and if they aren't they could tank our 3rd line. If Krav were to be scratched and Blais moved to 4th, you know it would be Vesey-Chytil-Goodrow, which isn't great, but its serviceable, but significantly weakens the 4L of Blais-Carpenter-Reaves.

Anyways back to original point, I think we need defensive insurance in form of veteran, not necessarily someone who needs to outright replace Jones or Schneider right away in lineup, just have the potential to do so and do so in a way better than Hajek.

Could also upgrade bottom 6 with depth, similar to last season. Kane would be a luxury on 3rd line, but his value to us would be lower playing with Chytil and playing 2PP so the price would need to be lower to account for his value. I've steered away from that quest with Kakko and Laf showing well on top 2 lines.

If price is right, pull trigger. If not, bolster bottom 6 and depth on D and let the roster do its thing.

For Mr 4 career points? I can’t see the Canucks taking that.
Mr 4 career points. Mr fleed the country. Mr injured after first hit.
