I really don't think a blockbuster trade for Kane as a rental is a viable option in the cards regardless.
I think you're looking at a guy making maybe 2-3.5 mil at the TDL.
As for next offseason, why even bother worrying about that. We just kicked off a new campaign and we're gunning for a cup. Time to live in the now.
Fitzy, look forward to another season of your tweets, one of my favrite follows my friend. Kane at double retention or 50% followed by a 25%-33% should be right in around there. 50% brings him to $5.250 followed by anywhere from 25%-50% making his salary $2.625M-$3.938M. With smart off day paper moves (Jones, Schneider) and getting down to 13/7/2 if someone can finally get and stay healthy, its doable at that price.
I'm not too concerned about Kane, with double retention and trading Blais in the deal we should be able to fit him in. Unless there's so many injuries that they can't accrue any cap space.
Blais to me is as good as gone if theres salary needing to go out this season as in prior to offseason in a TDL deal. Most logical choice, still somewhat young, oft-injured, low salary. Its unfortunate but I think staying healthy out of the gates this season was his chance. Same goes for Krav, think Laf will prove hes the better fit on that 2RW with Trocheck and Panarin over the next week.
I'm not even sure Kane is going to be the focus come TDL. If I'm seeing a clear weakness on this team, its someone who can put pucks in the net at ES (thats not Kane.)
The PP will be great, the PK should be pretty good (if not great bc of Igor) and I'm really bullish on our top 6 D and think that as long as they stay healthy, it can certain be considered championship level once certain guys get more experience/reps.
If they can score more 5v5, they're going to be a problem and thats where I'd imagine their focus will be but they won't try to bargain bin fix it with Vatrano (who did a fine job for what he is) this time around.
Think this fear comes from last season. Sure, 2 of our goals were special teams, but we controlled the 5v5 play and if not for Vasilevskiy, we would've blown Tampa out 5-1 or worse. If the team continues to play and control play the way we did Game 1, big IF, and there will be down games, but if we do, we shouldn't have trouble scoring 5v5 this season.
Actually read in a Vince article that Kreids and Zibby both acknowledged Kakko is going to help them sustain 5v5 pressure and not be a 1 and done rush line. Panarin wasn't asked, but Trocheck and Laf/Krav will certainly help that line too in that regards ... until Kane gets here at deadline ;-)
Kane would for sure put us over the top but I don’t see how we can afford him and these proposals we are giving up garbage for a guy who is capable putting up 100 points with Panarin and on our PP.
I’d love to make it work but I don’t see it happening.
Double retention anywhere from 50% + 25%-50% would put it in doable range with proper paper moves and good cap management. If not everything goes great that will need to be closer to 50% +50%, which would likely move the retention cost for us to the 3rd team from a 3rd rounder to a 2nd round pick, but for Kane and the ultimate goal we aspire to acheive with him as the addition, WELL worth it.
What's the most you've ever seen given up for a rental at the deadline?
kane's nmc is gonna limit their return that's just how it is. I think 1st, kravtsov, Blais or whoever for cap isnt too far off
Kanes NMC will bring it down, hes in drivers seat. CHI will have to play ball because he likely won't re-sing and when you've made it as clear as you have you're tanking (DeBrincat trade, Strome walking), you don't let Kane walk for free.
That said, a 1st round pick, a talented albeit reclamation project Kravtsov, Blais and a conditional 2nd that turns into another 1st near year if Rangers win Cup is not a bad return.
For Rangers perspective, we still have another 1st this year, and we only give up 1 out of top 2 picks next year. 2nd if we don't win, 1st if we do. If we do win, I'm sure no one will be complaining about our missing 1st next year. Both the 1sts we'd be potentially giving up project to be 25-32 anyways if all goes to plan and we make deep runs.
It's early to talk about Kane. I'd want to wait to see how the team gets going. If they can play a good deal of the season like they did last night (maybe a few less penalties), then we're talking.
Wish we would've checked out Kessel in the offseason to play opposite Panarin.
Its early, but this is a roster building thread lol. Honestly, this summer wasn't the right time to fill that hole. Rightly so, the Rangers made their #1 priority Trocheck, because he's an upgrade on 2C and gives us the potential to run 3 centres, and if anything has proved important for past winners, its C depth.
COL: MacKinnon, Kadri, Newhook/Compher
TBL x2: Point/Stamkos, Cirelli, Paul/Gourde
STL: O'Reilly, Schenn, Bozak
WSH: Backstrom, Kuz, Eller
PIT x2: Crosby, Malkin, Bonino
CHI: Toews, Richards (Kane is play driver on line)***
***Heres the unique thing, Kane acted as a play driver on that line in the way a C normally would, so Richards is probably the weakest 2C on a Stanley Cup winner in recent history.
We have the potential to put Panarin and Kane on the same line, 2 unique wingers in the NHL who can change a game from the wing with their playmaking.
The TDL is the time to upgrade that RW slot, and the great thing is until then, we'll find out if the LT solution is Laf after Kane comes, helps us win a Cup, and leaves. I'm gonna guess Laf proves to everyone he is the LT fit there, and won't complain about being 3LW if its Kane coming in to play RW. Laf and Chytil prove to be great on the 3rd line as a combo
Id feel pretty damn confident in this team If Kane was on it…
Like Id put $ on a cup
I already have money on us for the Cup, because if I'm a betting man I think we have a better chance of winning it than our current odds indicate. If I were a betting man I'd also bet on us being the favorites to land Kane, no matter what anyone says. I'm going with my gut, logic, and Larry Brooks. He may be hoping and wishing, but theres also no one who has a finger on the pulse of the Rangers better than him. It was he after all who had Vesey coming to Rangers camp before the PTO was announced, and he who has had multiple other scoops well prior to them being anything more than a "rumor"
Its a good thing I'm a betting man because I'm all in.
I trust Brooks. Maybe he's blowing smoke, starting rumors, but he's normally pretty bang on with his takes. He's got sources, and a good read on the org.
Logic says Rangers would be a top destination based on contention, location, needs, and ability to give potentially 2 1st rounders and a guy who although has had struggles, still has talent to put together in Kravtsov.
Think other contenders who Kane may go to AS A PURE RENTAL Edmonton, Toronto, Colorado. They would be ins ame boat as us in not giving up their very top prospect for a guy they can't re-sign. They may have a better top prospect, but they also won't give them up.
Oilers aren't trading Holloway for Kane. Leafs may trade Robertson but is he really THAT much better than Kravtsov. Colorado won't trade Byram for Kane.
Buffalo is the wildcard here, but Kane can sign with them in offseason. If he's being traded at deadline, he WILL use his NMC to make sure its a contender, not to Buffalo just to get them into playoffs. He's leaving Chicago because of losing. If he wants to go home to lose, he knows he can do so in offseason. Buffalo is not, a factor come TDL.
Sure, the cap may not be straightforward or easy, but it's possible and thats all that matters. And all I'm saying is theres alot more signs pointing towards it making sense than not. Drury made no mistake getting that extra 1st round pick this year, he's either making the selection at the draft, or using the spare one at the TDL. It won't be used in a trade at draft, because we'll be moving salary out, not using 1st round picks to bring it in.
Make no mistake, Kane ABSOLUTELY moves the needle a HELL of a lot more for this team than any other addition whether it be a 3rd pair LHD with more experience than Jones or a 3RW so Goodrow can go down and create a better 4th line. Kane is a game changer, and if he has his way, I'm better his way is here, and that will benefit us at a discounted price and getting one of the best players in the game.
Until then, I absolutely agree, lets enjoy this season because its shaping up to be fun. I just wanted to ahve this post here so I can either look like an idiot when Kane doesn't move at all or goes to the Islanders ... or quote this and say i told you so on March 3rd.
Shaping up to be an exciting, fun, full-of-potential season Can't wait.
