How so? He's still 55% on the dots, PKs, and wears an A.

You don't need him to score points. If he can be a veteran Blair Betts for this team as 1-2 year stopgap as a role player, it's needed.

That doesn't make him a good player. That means he can win face offs at a pretty high clip and has been chosen to play during the PK and to wear a letter.

Brett Howden kills penalties here, but that doesn't mean he's good at it.

Rooney is a better player.

man if some of you think Miller is soft just wait till you see big dumb Sutter losing every puck battle

It's been years since the Quinn hire, isn't there a talented assistant ready to take the step up? Or is that completely ruled out?

I've seen some talk about Van Ryn (St. Louis). Just because it didnt work with Quinn doesn't mean an assistant who has done the leg work might not be the right guy this time. I'm not very impressed with the recycled dino's. This would be Gallant's (eg) fourth job or something.
Van Ryn may be headed to Arizona to replace Tocchet.

People being so sure that Quinn is gone is comforting for sure, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

No thanks to Torts.

I’m interested Babcock despite his warts.

I really just want a guy that can modify tactics mid-game and that will do whatever is necessary to ensure that our top draft picks become first line players. A guy that is willing to let lines establish chemistry and doles out ice time in a reasonable way.
Not sure that's Babcock. Quinn is learning.

A bigger part of the PP struggles all these years was that those teams flat out did not have guys with the level of natural talent that Fox, Panarin, and Zibanejad have.

Nash and McDonagh were good but not PP specialists by any stretch

Why not Knobby as coach? He has done well with Hartford, alot of guys know him. He had the team playing well here.

Because the whole point of firing JD and Gorton, according to Dolan, is that we should be further along and we're a Stanley Cup contender. They're not going to hire another developmental coach to be the HC.

Gerard Gallant should be the guy. He had young players in Florida. Huberdeau was in his 3rd NHL season when Gallant took over in 14-15. Barkov was in his 2nd NHL season. Rookie season for Ekblad. Second full season for Bjugstad. Trocheck was a young player and he played 50 NHL games that season. He spilt 13-14 and 14-15 between the NHL and AHL. Trocheck became a full-time NHL player after 14-15.

The Panthers were really good in Gallant's 2nd season. He was named a Jack Adams finalist that year.

Gallant did a terrific job in Vegas. He won the Adams in his first season. Vegas lost in the Cup finals. He took a group of players from different teams and molded them into a team. The Vegas team had Shea Theodore and Alex Tuch play important roles.

Gallant was a tough player with the Red Wings. He was a good quality player who wasn't afraid to get involved physically.

The Rangers need a coach who is not afraid to play and trust young players. They need to be tougher to play against. The Rangers need structure. His Vegas teams had good underlying numbers. CF% and xGF%. Gallant should be the guy. He coaches the team and doesn't get involved in nonsense.

Is there any chance at all that the Hurricanes and Rod Brind'Amour don't agree to a new contract? He's at the tippy top of my wishlist.

But if not Brind'Amour, I'm still on the Gallant bandwagon
I remember Pierre LeBrun saying that Seattle was close to hiring Gallant as far back as last fall. They still haven't named a head coach. Vegas hired Gallant in April, two months before the expansion draft in 2017. The expansion draft this year is in July. Could be that the guy Francis wants is still coaching and he's waiting for the season to end or his team to get eliminated from the playoffs.

Nick Kypreos said on his podcast yesterday that he heard whispers of Babcock possibly being the next coach. Don Maclean said he heard Torts. I dont know how I would feel about that.
Do the Rangers really want to go through another (among other things)social media backlash for someone in the org? That just sounds like giving yourself a headache voluntarily if they hire Babcock. I don't think Torts got along with Dolan that well towards then end.

Yeah this is important for sure, but the overall philosophy needs to be strong and defined no matter who is coming in. Thats one of the big issues right now.

My preference is to hire someone who preaches in your face/super aggressiveness and not and understands that sometimes, you're going to have to take 1 to give 1. With a few tweaks, this group will win a lot if they decide to play this way.

Gallant is the top choice available for me but he isn't the only one.

It sounds like the sticking point is that Rod wants his staff “taken care of”. The belief is that a extension for him personally is all but done. He’s willing to take below market value to make sure his crew stays together.

He’s very likely staying in Carolina.

And what are the downsides? Why isn't he employed atm?

Probabaly the same answer to the question of why he’s been repeatedly unceremoniously fired while his teams are still performing well. I don’t know what it is but there seems to be something weird there. Having said that, he’s probably the best of who’s available unless that unknown thing is really a doozy

I'd completely disregard him being fired from Florida as a mark against him as they really had no idea wtf they were doing at that time. If you think the Rangers situation right now is a cluster, it looks tame AF compared to what was going on with the Panthers.

The Vegas situation does give me a slight bit of pause but not too much.
