Brendl's huge problem at the NHL level was that he couldn't skate vaguely good enough at that level

World class shot but unable to use it correctly at the NHL level

Brendl never gave a shit. Never in shape; thought he could get by on skill alone. He wasted his talent. Having a top 4 pick flame out really stings in the long term.

The rules for the taxi squad say that if a taxi squad player is deemed unfit to play, the team can request they do not count toward the 6 player limit. Given that, my assumption is that the team would then be allowed to call someone up to fill that spot.

I guess it kinda goes hand in hand. If he had put in the time to improve the deficiencies in his game he could have been good.
I feel like I heard stories that when people saw him come to camp and skate they immediately thought "oh shit this guy can't skate for shit and will never play in the NHL"

won't complain cause it benefits us but doesn't seem right to pro-rate bonuses but not salaries and the cap....in a shortened season a player making $10 mil only gets $6.83 mil but that doesn't give the team an extra $3 mil in space...

also if the bonus is $250k to win the calder than why is it 170K cause the regular season was shortened? the guy still won the trophy.

I think it's about not overcomplicating things when it's not too important. There are a lot of issues to deal with in the first place and the most straight forward solutions are welcomed. In this case - how many teams should worry about Calder to make a special exception for it. Same goes for keeping unprorated cap and salaries for the limit calculation.

how is this a solution for anything? its an issue that effects only the rangers

Four thoughts on the NHL's return and what it means for the NY Rangers
Essentially, the Rangers could have $3.19 million more in cap space than they originally anticipated.
The big unknown is whether the NHL will also pro-rate the $6.1125 million performance bonus cushion. If that number reduces, they'd be back in the same boat with limited cap space.
The Rangers, clearly, are hopeful the 7.5% cushion won't change.
If it does stay at $6.1125 million, and the Rangers do gain $3 million-plus in additional cap space, they'll have some options.

I was wholeheartedly against signing Matt Martin when free agency opened, but with these 8 games against each divisional opponent, maybe the idea should be revisited if he is coming in at the league minimum.

And if the performance bonuses do get prorated, I would hope they add one of the many veteran Centers available as depth/insurance.

David Quinn is short on time to make crucial Rangers decisions

The top three spots down the middle are accounted for by Mika Zibanejad, Ryan Strome and Filip Chytil. Presuming the Rangers do not stack Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider and Lafreniere on the left side, there is going to be a spot open on the third-line flank.

Where does the hierarchy believe Howden (who played wing exclusively over the final 10 weeks last season until returning to the middle for the three qualifying-round games against Carolina) would have the most value?
The same question applies to Barron, the freshman pro whom the Rangers had planned to try at the wing had he been deemed eligible for the 2020 tournament.

Assigning Lafreniere to the third line seems silly. The Rangers should do everything in their power to allow the first-overall selection to hit the ground running. That means giving him the opportunity to skate with Zibanejad.

And that means moving Buchnevich out of the top-six and onto Chytil’s unit. By the way, No. 89 combined with No. 72 for 219:13 five-on-minutes through which the tandem accounted for a 54.61 Corsi, 58.19 shot share and 12 goals for with eight goals against. So that’s a start.

If it were my call, I’d go with Kreider-Zibanejad-Lafreniere (and don’t be surprised if No. 13 is the one who shifts to his off-wing) and Panarin-Strome-Kakko as the top two units.

And I’d have Buchnevich skate with Chytil, leaving an opening on the wing for Howden, Barron, Julien Gauthier or Brendan Lemieux to seize.

The taxi squad will consist of four-to-six players. One slot must be reserved for a goaltender. The Rangers would save $1.075 million on the cap if either Smith or Johnson is waived through to the taxi squad, though it’s unlikely that the club would waive a guy it just signed as a free agent on incoming assistant coach Jacques Martin’s recommendation, isn’t it?

Points do not equal value

They don't but what value does Rooney have to this team other than a 13th forward?

Is it possible he's one of those late bloomers like a Jason Ward, John Mitchell, PA Parenteu, or even Paul Carey that the Rangers have done pretty well with over the last 15-16 years?

Sure, but it's more likely he's Greg McKeg 2.0
