You may well be right. That's the area where I think there's the most fuzziness – presuming they allow movement at all.

The rules for the taxi squad say that if a taxi squad player is deemed unfit to play, the team can request they do not count toward the 6 player limit. Given that, my assumption is that the team would then be allowed to call someone up to fill that spot.

JMO, but instead of waiting until a player is 27-30 and then committing to that player long-term if he has proven himself I think they should change strategy and commit to players in their prime and walk away from them when they are over the hill.

Our current strategy is to make sure that we never give a long term contract to a rotten egg, OTOH, we really risk getting stuck with declining players like we have seen time and time again. With the strategy I propose management must make a call on which players are worth betting on and which aren’t, because if we wait until they have proven themselves it’s too late.

But I just don’t think you ever can win a cup in this league unless you have multiple really good contracts. Look at Toronto. Top talent alone doesn’t even win you a round in the POs.

I think if Zibanejad hadn’t missed significant chunks of time over the last few seasons (or if they were fluke injuries), it probably wouldn’t even be an internal debate.

But right now, there’s a hesitation. We’ll see if it passes or grows in the coming months.

Its imperative that Kakko, Lafreniere and Fox are locked up long term at the first chance. I agree with your take on Toronto, worst thing with them is they gave Matthews the money and only gave him 5 years. To me, Laf and Kakko have to go 8, its the only way you can continue to compete, Boston and Pitsburgh are examples of teams getting their top players on decent contracts.
This predicates they will be that good. Do you remember Lundmark and Brendl? That possibility is ever-present no matter what anyone says.

The odds of picks 4-8 busting out of the nhl entirely are a lot higher than the odds of first of second overall picks.

Brendl was a known cherry picker who NYR were counting on to be the next Pavel Bure, but he didn’t end up having that kind of ability.

Kakko and Lafreniere “busting” would be if they topped out as 20-20 players

I am super impressed with Ziba and he has been fantastic the last two years.

But with the production he got now he will command top dollars for 7 years. I mean, if he is a 40 goal 90 pts player 10m is on the low side even. That is just very risky.

Facts are, Zibanejad’s current contract hasn’t even been that valuable for us. He has been cheap while we have been rebuilding. That won’t mean a ton to us when we are supposed to contend.

This is just a big problem. We need great players on good contracts. Those won’t fall into your lap — right? Kreider and Ziba had 5 years deals. 7 year deals would have made a lot more sense.

I know that there are many excuses and I am not saying that all excuses are bogus, but management must come through here. You won’t win a cup without having cap bargains.

You see leagues where guys wear cages like that and I find it interesting that you don’t see some guys stick with it in the NHL. Obviously, most guys wouldn’t, but some? I wonder if teams dissuade players because of visibility or maybe if it’s a “toughness” thing. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t be legal as they’re more protective if anything.

Good point, but the reason for lack of players playing with a cage is definitely peer pressure from players. Believe me, a player showing up with a cage would hear it. Cherry used to trash players a lot that played with one even after face injuries.

BTW, pics of players with cages in Europe are from juniors or after injuries, don’t think there is a single pro that plays without one. There are a lot of reasons for it. In 10 years?

The teams twitter account posted Igor, Trouba, Panarin, Zibby and Kreider in that return to play image

I assume those 4 will be the alternate captains (minus Igor)

My prediction for the Taxi Squad:

Kinkaid, Blackwell, Di Giuseppe, Bitetto, Raddysh and either Brodziski or Greco

Until fighting isn't allowed it will never happen...like wearing a head guard to a UFC match.

Seems like we've got too many left wings and not enough right wings all up and down the lineup.

Barron and Gettinger both prefer the left. PDG does too I believe.

If it’s 6 beyond a 23 roster than presumably PDG, Blackwell, and Bitetto are already on it. Kincaid, Raddysh, Gettinger, Brodzinski, either Tarmo or Hajek and one of Kodorenko, Greco, or Richards is mine.

Brendl's huge problem at the NHL level was that he couldn't skate vaguely good enough at that level

World class shot but unable to use it correctly at the NHL level

Has there been anymore talk of granlund coming here or did that die once strome resigned? It's getting late early and he still doesn't have a dance partner

At least in the NHL, you are prohibited from wearing a cage/shield. Only players recovering from injuries get a waiver from the league to participate in a full shield.

LOL. Barnaby was responding to a photo of Reunanen at the u17 WHC where everyone wears a full cage because of IIHF regulations (Anyone under the age of 18 has to wear a full cage)

Really goes to show how much of a step up the NHL is in terms of speed and skating from basically everywhere. Brendl was fantastic in the WHL, good in the AHL, an awesome scorer in the KHL, Liiga, tore up the SHL, etc. And couldn't stick at all in the NHL. He had some other deficiencies but you hit the nail on the head, the skating was the killer.

If the performance bonuses are pro-rated, the Rangers would have $4,079,916 in cap space with 14 forwards and 7 defensemen*

That changes things significantly.

*Assuming the overall cap stays the same
