LOL. Are you saying that photo isn’t really me?

But joking aside, I think a lot could really depend on seeing how Zibanejad does this next year. I know this board doesn’t necessarily want to hear this, but the Rangers aren’t fully committed to him long-term just yet.

I agree, im not sure they will be willing to commit 7 years at what he will be worth. If he'd sign for 4 years i could see it being possible but with Panarin signed and the others that will be needed to be signed down the road, having Zib signed for 7 years might not work for the Rangers. On the flip side, they havent drafted like a team about to lose their #1 center so there's also that.

This should make Kakko happy

You see leagues where guys wear cages like that and I find it interesting that you don’t see some guys stick with it in the NHL. Obviously, most guys wouldn’t, but some? I wonder if teams dissuade players because of visibility or maybe if it’s a “toughness” thing. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t be legal as they’re more protective if anything.

So now I suppose we just pray that none of our top players opt out of the season

That photo is from 2015 when he was playing at the WHC-17.... Where everyone wears a cage because those are IIHF regulations. Everyone under the age of 18 has to wear a cage

Here's a photo of him playing for HPK this season:

Serious question, is this team’s bottom 6 depth or LD depth a bigger problem for this upcoming season

I think it has to be LD. Lindgren, Johnson and Smith as your left side is the worst corps in the league by a mile
Lets not assume that Hajek can't beat out either of Smith or Johnson. Doesn't change the crux of your post, though.

For such a “great leader” who people want as captain you’d think Kreider will be willing to mentor Lafreniere and let him move in with him..just goes to show you he’s yet another me-first guy out for himself worried he’ll fall to the 3LW job if Lafreniere performs as we all hope.

Thats so cool that you were there for that conversation where Kreider told Lafreniere that he couldn't move in with him. That's some serious access you have there.

Unless of course its just your ass speaking....

Im not sure that it’s “worse,” but I don’t see an improvement either except for the addition of Laf whose likely to start on the 3rd line. There is a glaring hole next to Trouba where they really need a competent defender who can play big minutes. It’s also a little disappointing that they couldn’t add a better option or two in the bottom 6 given the flat cap. I think they could really use a Dom Moore type as well as a guy in the Grabner/Hagelin mold. A guy with serious speed who excels on the PK.

Edit: Oops, misread. I thought you meant are they worse off than last year, not which scenario is worse now.

I think there are only 9 forwards with sure positions. Beyond that, it’s a camp competition. Guys like Gauthier, Rooney and others have to earn positions. Competition is what makes a team better.

Competition is great, but I’m not sure that the guys competing are of high enough quality. Time will tell, but I’m really not wildly optimistic about this bottom 6. I’m not sold on Chytil as a center yet, and that 3rd line RW spot could be an issue. I’m also not sure that they adequately addressed the PK situation. I get they are tight vs the cap but I would’ve liked to see them add a value contract or two via free agency on a short deal or trade.

I wouldn’t officially rule him out, but in all honesty I haven’t been overly impressed by Hajek at all. I’d be surprised if he became a fixture in the lineup this year. I’m not particularly a Smith or JJ fan, but both are probably still better than Hajek. I’m more intrigued by Reunanen or Miller in the not too distant future.

That’s a fair point. The good news is that the guys you do have will compete and the better players will play. It will also give you an idea about what steps are next in building out the roster. Couldn’t agree more about the PK. So damn important.

With regards to Smith and his spot on the team, i think its his spot to lose beside Trouba, i just think that pair played so well after the Skjei trade someone will have to really force him out of there. I also feel that Hajek isn't being taken seriously enough either, i know he fell off a bit but he is still a good prospect who could turn it around given his size and attibutes, another bad year though and its not lookin good. The wild card in this is he's playing now, will he be sharper than those that arent?

Maybe Krieder has hobbies that aren’t conducive to roommates
