I agree with all this, meaning whatever poor bastard ends up at 4th line LW (Lemieux?) Is gonna play about 4 minutes a game. Better start teaching him to PK.

Very good point - whoever ends up as 4LW better be a PKer (and / or a pugilist)

I mean plenty of people said the deal was bad before the pandemic

Now, instead of it being a possibility of the contract being a boat anchor, it’s a certainty

It's fine for now. We'll see how long he remains productive. If he's still playing well after 4 years when his NMC changes to an M-NTC, maybe we can move him.

That Kreider contract will haunt the Rangers sooner rather than later. Elliotte Friedman said the players will owe the owners more than one billion dollars. The cap will be flat for the entirety of this new CBA. 7 YEARS at $81.5M. December 12 podcast. The Rangers made the deal before Covid became bad in the U.S. 20/20 hindsight. The world changed 2-3 weeks later. The cap was supposed to go up after the new NHL TV deal. Another expansion team in Seattle. None of that will help the cap.

Before the pandemic - and please don't forget before the Rangers lucked out in getting Lafreniere with the 1OA - the deal was structured so that there were ways it wouldn't be an issue down the road.

highly unlikely.

There's possible scenarios where there's no attendance for a LONG time and/or revenue does not recover for 7 years. But I don't see it. If companies like the UFC can have record revenue, it's possible to bring it in, you just have to get creative.

It might be time the NHL looks to players as corporate whores. It's already starting with the Devils and Capitals.

It’s tough to predict what will happen with the cap.

The cap potentially not rising much, if at all for the foreseeable future was something the players decided to risk by not wanting to renegotiate with the owners.

It would be devastating for the sport long term if there is zero cap growth over the next five years so I’m hoping things will change

Is TB tying up loose ends after identifying a way to cut cap, or are they digging their grave deeper?

Yzerman is circling the wagons offering LTIR Zetterberg for Johnson, don’t you worry about it

And he’ll make Tampa pay for the pleasure

That and Tampa told Kucherov to hold off on whatever surgery he needs so they can put him on LTIR too

there was a report yesterday that Kucherov might start the year on LTIR...so that would give them 9.5 mil in space which still isn't enough to sign cirelli likely and unless he misses the whole year you'd need space to add kucherov back so its only a temporary solution...

also tb had to sign those guys and those aren't bad deals...so they were already in cap hell with no obvious solution but they really didn't make it worse.

Watch Kucherov show up for game 1 of the playoffs and TB won't get penalized one bit this year for basically being 10 million over the cap. Unreal.

What if he suddenly appears week 1 of the playoffs? would you be surprised?

Kucherov is one of my favorite players especially come playoff time but TB makes playoffs even without him so am I missing something if he comes back in time for playoffs and all is solved for this season for TB? Plus I'm sure he still gets paid. Win win.

At this point with everyone finding all sorts of loopholes can we get credit for the buyout money against the cap on Hank's contract? I mean since he won't be playing?
The league really needs to do their due diligence regarding this Kucherov injury and if suddenly appears for the playoffs.

no we won't get space back. thats not how it works and his current situation has nothing to do with us. rangers would have to be able to prove that hank knew he couldn't play and lied. even then the league would just tell them 'sucks to be you bro'

the league also won't investigate tb or anyone else. that is also not how things work lol

I know I was being facetious with a little bit of annoyance about what TB could possibly pull off here.

Except for not having Kucherov for 56 games.
And? What would it matter besides being a bit rusty? are they really missing the playoffs in that division? They easily take first if not second place at worst.

He played quite a bit of it last season with mixed results.

I still think the smartest play is to pair Kreider and Buchnevich with Chytil while letting Lafreniere and whom ever wants to step up and grab a top 9 spot ride along with Zibanejad.

I think a Lafreniere and Zib combo is going to be an absolute nightmare. But does that third line get consistent mismatches? I'm not sure. I do think that a right shot option with Lafreniere will create the most offense. The question imo is around, can a kid like Chytil end up as the Breadman's center, or does a Lafreniere-Gauthier combo on the wing create enough offense on the third line.

I'd like to see them try 7 D and 11 forwards, with the 4th line being PKers who get 5v5 minutes with a guy getting double shifted to see if they can get some more minutes in different situation. That said, having 3 RH shots is something most teams don't go up against, if that 3rd RH option is coming from the D, then you still have plays you can run that you normally couldn't.

However it unfolds, it should be fun to watch.

After the shit we pulled with Wade Redden in the AHL I tend to be hesitant to judge cap maneuvering
Yeah yeah I know no throwing stones but was looking forward to a cascade of interesting deals due to cap issues oh well :D

I thought they would have LTIR'd Stamkos, and that would be totally legit, the guy looked like he lost a ton of weight in the playoffs so there may be something there that we don't know publicly. Kucherov on the other hand is less conspiratorial imo, LTIRing a guy who can be the best player in the world on any given night isn't what you do if you want to win.
