The more I think of it the more we need a good name for the crowd to cheer. Buch might get traded anytime between now and the end of his contract and we already got rid of Henrik. So we have I-Gor and that's it? We don't have Staal to actually boo.

Hen-drix, Hen-drix
Guuuuuhhhhhle
Am I missing anyone?

There won't be a crowd?

If Wennberg is bought out, he’s the only one I’d be very interested in. He could definitely benefit from a change of scenery, but if not he is still already proven as a highly capable defensive 3C.

Put up 40 in 69 as a sophomore, followed by 59 in 82, and 35 in 66. Hasn’t meshed under Torts’ system in Columbus but has talent and would be a defensively sound center for the third line either way.
Maybe? He doesn’t win faceoffs and he doesn’t hit anything. Davidson should know him well though. Feel like his price might get driven up. Not sure of the fit.

Rangers are aware of bonuses, but not fixated on it.

But it's a reminder that this isn't a team that's going out and adding $12 million in salary just because it "can" on paper.

Do we still have a lot of balls in the air or have things quieted down a bit since yesterday?

Honestly, in a vacuum, I love how they operate. Get done what we need to now, and address what issues come as they do. It's obvious Gorton is too smart to handicap himself, and he's very much always playing chess it feels like. I like that they go and get their guys and do what they see fit though. Gorton at the helm has seemed to be much better at this too.

He feels like a 16 year old Kreider who has all these tools but hasn't figured out how to use them all. It isn't a knock on him, it's just more of a statement that he needs time and direction to grow into his tools.
I can see that. But I think that Kreider had a bit more ......determination? Is that the proper word to use?

I am not suggesting that he should not be given a chance, just that he needs to start playing with what at least appears to be a pretty sizeable toolbox.

Most teams will only be making one deal, maybe two all offseason due to all the restrictions and weird situations league-wide. Because of that there is a much greater likelihood that other GMs that are going to be making very few moves have cold feet and want to be sure they are nailing it if they are pulling the trigger. I'd bet we've been very close with a couple deals in the last 24 hours and the other GMs are dancing scared.

You are probably right. Gorton has made some nice moves and I am sure he has some things on the stove. One interesting thing that I would like to know if he has thought about is PATRICK LAINE... How nice would that be. I would trade Buche, DeAngelo and our 2nd 1st rd pick with maybe another sweetener for Laine. A young 22 yr old that would be under team control for 3 years and would give us lines Panarin, Laine. Kreider, Kaako, Lafreiniere, and Kartsov as our wingers. For the time being we would roll with Z and Chytil as our centers. A call would have to be later on Z but think about how skilled and young we would be for years to come. This would give us a chance not just to be contenders every year but have DYNASTY!!!!

It's more about diversifying your lineup. Edge specifically said there will be roster changes that see players leave that put up more points than the guys who are their replacements with an eye to changing the mix and making the group harder to play against. Strome fits that narrative completely.
Oh, I know and agree. But was more thinking that would come on wings as opposed to center to where I do not currently see a suitable Strome replacement

Still in the air, but right now it doesn't look like there will be movement pre-draft.

I think teams want to see who isn't getting a new contract and who might be available in the draft before they start swapping assets.

Cool. Maybe I can be a little productive for the next 5 hours...or at least take a nap.

Thanks.

Janmark is hardly an alternative to Strome. Same age, career high of 34 points and has taken a total of 95 face offs over the past 143 games. He’s a bottom six LW. Not a center and certainly not a potential 2C.
Both hockeydb and capfriendly list Janmark as a C, but its not just Janmark I'm referring to.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the bonus amounts get added to a team's salary total at season's end? Because, if so, it's like not a huge issue as long as we leave 1-2m in space at the start of the season.

The bigger issue is this cap on how much bonus money can be spent in a year -- 7.5m. It will force the Rangers to make sure they have enough cheap depth in the lineup to sit the kids or let them develop in Hartford.

We need to keep that in mind when people start complaining that the Jason Strudwicks of the world are playing while the K'Andre Millers are in the AHL.

This is a very nuanced conversation though and one we can't really have without getting bored. Suffice to say the team will need to find a balance between paying vets 1-2m AAV on this year's cap vs having bonuses roll over to next year and effecting next year's cap.

One positive side effect is the Rangers may need to gives kids like Reuschoff, Richards and Khodorenko some NHL time as well as less heralded young players like Hajek, Barron, Gettinger and Reunanen. It may be a financial necessity.

If I have it right, never a given.

It looks like the Rangers would be exceeding their bonus cushion of 7.5% on day 1 of the cap unless they are ~4M under it the ceiling on day 1.

So therefor they need to be ~4M under the cap

Yet since it's day 1, they could start those who have possible big bonuses in the minors on Day 1. The total 4M combined possible bonuses on the NHL roster day 1 could be zero, they'd just have to start on day 1, players who did not have bonuses in lieu of those who do.

Which means Laf and Kakko probably would start day 1 in the minors and someone like PDG would start if he is still with them. (could be any depth player(s) really)

Instead, it looks like they are going to try to go into the season essentially 4M under the ceiling. (likely plus some)

I mean I get the optics of them not wanting to start Laf, Kakko in the minors, yet that trade off means they are likely to lose some asset, Strome, or return for that asset for nothing to account for that 4M.

Lafreniere can’t go to the A, it’s either Rangers or back to the Q

Also keeping in mind that teams might be more hesistant to have players coming in and out of their bubble. That could lead teams to just living kids in place.

Beyond this season, you have Smith coming off the books (Girardi?) and eventually Lundqvist and Shattenkirk come off.

And that's assuming that someone like ADA doesn't get moved at some point, as well as Strome which seems inevitable one way or the other at this point.

So this isn't a team without ability the next few years.

Shout out to Edge for letting everyone know they can go do real life until it's time for the draft

Anyone have an idea what these bonuses are and the likelihood of EVERYONE hitting?

There's a bunch of different performance bonuses that can part of an ELC. The max potential bonuses is 2.85 mil.

There can be bonuses based on games played, goals, assists and points. There are also bonuses for TOI and getting votes for individual awards. Do a search on NHL CBA and download the PDF. On page 26, it talks about the games played bonus, and page 326 shows the "A" and "B" bonuses that can be included in an ELC.
