Hmm… would LA go so far as 2OA, one of Turcotte/Vilardi/Kupari and Bjornfot in exchange for the 1OA?
Wouldn't do it, you would be betting on two assets hopefully working out versus keeping the one elite assets that is much safer to be an impact player. It would need to be more than what you floated

How do you know he's nice?

Well he comes off as a really nice kid haha.

Byfield may have serious boom potential but there’s also hella bust potential as well.

I actually think hes a pretty safe bet to play in the NHL. He's big and he can skate, at the very least there is the makings of a better version of Brian Boyle.

I think the offensive potential, while its there and legitimate, is a bit overstated. He's got the whole Rick Nash "too much junior" in his game thing going on. His individual shot rates were not great either and he isn't a dummy, but I wouldn't call him a high level thinker, that alone kind of docks the potential down a notch or two for me.

The OHL was basically a glorified shinny league this year.

Two-way contract only means he'd get paid different salaries between the NHL and AHL. He's on a one-way but regardless of that, if the Rangers send him to Hartford they only save like $950k on the cap.

The new term is "Buried" contract.

Got it

@GAGLine was the first to mention that we were in for a squeeze with performance bonuses shortly after the deadline.
he was. Rare issue to be presented with but I dont think its that dire.

It makes decisions tougher. If we didn't have the bonus issue, Strome would have been signed/qualified already.

It comes down to, 'Is Strome worth the dead cap space?' We can still survive with an absurd amount of dead cap space next year... but if it does happen, it should be for a player with a long term future here

We will more than likely be surpassing the Bonus limit next year too. Lafreniere, Kakko, Fox and possibly Kravtsov, Miller etc.

LA does not have anything that is super interesting to me. Turcotte is a very nice player, but a trade focused on Byfield and Turcotte isn't enough for me. Their other prospects don't move the needle for us since our system is stacked. Where does Kaliev fit in when we've got guys like Kakko and Kravtsov already? He's not jumping over Panarin or Kreider anytime soon. Madden is a nice player too, but what are we looking at there? a 3rd line center down the line?

Just stay at #1, take Lafreniere, and if you want to get a top end C prospect, either draft one or maybe swing a separate deal for one. Unless there was a 1A/1B situation, similar to last season, and you get the top pick, maybe you can think about moving down to add assets and more pieces. It just doesn't make any sense this year.

The bonus cushion issue sort of means nothing. They were going to account for these bonuses on this year's cap anyway. Being up against the cushion just forces them to do what they are already doing.

If I have it right, never a given.

It looks like the Rangers would be exceeding their bonus cushion of 7.5% on day 1 of the cap unless they are ~4M under it the ceiling on day 1.

So therefor they need to be ~4M under the cap

Yet since it's day 1, they could start those who have possible big bonuses in the minors on Day 1. The total 4M combined possible bonuses on the NHL roster day 1 could be zero, they'd just have to start on day 1, players who did not have bonuses in lieu of those who do.

Which means Laf and Kakko probably would start day 1 in the minors and someone like PDG would start if he is still with them. (could be any depth player(s) really)

Instead, it looks like they are going to try to go into the season essentially 4M under the ceiling. (likely plus some)

I mean I get the optics of them not wanting to start Laf, Kakko in the minors, yet that trade off means they are likely to lose some asset, Strome, or return for that asset for nothing to account for that 4M.

Yeah, and while it will cause some concern getting under the cap initial, most of the bonuses won't be realized, and there won't be a bonus overage carry into next year's cap. Though as you say, there will be an issue with that year's bonuses too.

I wouldn't.

Vilardi has a history of back issues, Kupari is meh and I've never been super high on Turcotte.

Bjornfot isn't anything overly special either.
I’m in the same boat. I think LA has talent but it’s the wrong timeline. We need a C that can contribute immediately. Maybe Vilardi can give that to you, but I’m not screaming for that. Byfield would be someone you would hope could fill that, but it’s an unnecessary dice roll. There is nothing on LA that would be that offer that you can’t justify refusing. We are exiting the rebuild phase, they are still in theirs and that’s where their assets are.

Too many alternatives to Strome on the market right now, all due to make considerably less than what Strome could fetch and we could get stuck with in an arbitration award.

Janmark is hardly an alternative to Strome. Same age, career high of 34 points and has taken a total of 95 face offs over the past 143 games. He’s a bottom six LW. Not a center and certainly not a potential 2C.

None of the buy out guys are remotely appealing yet. No need to dumpster dive on this yet.

If Wennberg is bought out, he’s the only one I’d be very interested in. He could definitely benefit from a change of scenery, but if not he is still already proven as a highly capable defensive 3C.

Put up 40 in 69 as a sophomore, followed by 59 in 82, and 35 in 66. Hasn’t meshed under Torts’ system in Columbus but has talent and would be a defensively sound center for the third line either way.

The more I think of it the more we need a good name for the crowd to cheer. Buch might get traded anytime between now and the end of his contract and we already got rid of Henrik. So we have I-Gor and that's it? We don't have Staal to actually boo.

Guuuuuhhhhhle
Am I missing anyone?
