Lafreniere can’t go to the A, it’s either Rangers or back to the Q
Thanks, I overlooked that.

So it would have to be some other players. The only ones who have possible bonus money, and are waiver exempt. Kakko (~2.6m), Fox (850K) Chytil (350k) Shesterkin (2.85M)

Like I said I doubt the Rangers go that route if it comes to it, not only would it look bad but the players would not deserve it.

There is a though from the guys i talked to that teams feel that there are some rfa players that may not get qualified that a lot of teams might be interested and its holding other things up.

Also keeping in mind that teams might be more hesistant to have players coming in and out of their bubble. That could lead teams to just living kids in place.

Beyond this season, you have Smith coming off the books (Girardi?) and eventually Lundqvist and Shattenkirk come off.

And that's assuming that someone like ADA doesn't get moved at some point, as well as Strome which seems inevitable one way or the other at this point.

So this isn't a team without ability the next few years.

This is why that whole bonus issue is likely not a huge concern. And is a bit overblown.

But good point re: bubble. That's a much bigger issue AFAIC. Poses a real issue re: development. What happens when some of these kids make the team but aren't getting the playing time they need to develop? Do you keep a taxi squad and risk them not playing enough? Will there even be a legit AHL season? Call ups -- into the bubble -- could be a real nightmare.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the bonus amounts get added to a team's salary total at season's end? Because, if so, it's like not a huge issue as long as we leave 1-2m in space at the start of the season.

The bigger issue is this cap on how much bonus money can be spent in a year -- 7.5m. It will force the Rangers to make sure they have enough cheap depth in the lineup to sit the kids or let them develop in Hartford.

We need to keep that in mind when people start complaining that the Jason Strudwicks of the world are playing while the K'Andre Millers are in the AHL.

This is a very nuanced conversation though and one we can't really have without getting bored. Suffice to say the team will need to find a balance between paying vets 1-2m AAV on this year's cap vs having bonuses roll over to next year and effecting next year's cap.

One positive side effect is the Rangers may need to gives kids like Reuschoff, Richards and Khodorenko some NHL time as well as less heralded young players like Hajek, Barron, Gettinger and Reunanen. It may be a financial necessity.
I don't think the TSN report was particularly clear or well written. Not all contracts are the same when it come to bonus clauses.

There's a bunch of different performance bonuses that can part of an ELC. The max potential bonuses is 2.85 mil.

There can be bonuses based on games played, goals, assists and points. There are also bonuses for TOI and getting votes for individual awards. Do a search on NHL CBA and download the PDF. On page 26, it talks about the games played bonus, and page 326 shows the "A" and "B" bonuses that can be included in an ELC.

I don't know how they actually consider this but the maximum possible bonuses is likely lower than just summing them all up. For example, Shesterkin and Lafreniere cannot both win the Calder trophy.

I'm curious if moving MAF and the cost to do so is directly linked to whether they can go after Pietrangelo. If the cost isn't exorbitant to move him, they would probably prefer that to an ADA trade. If it is, they may circle back to a less expensive (in terms of cap space) option

I dont see how anyone would trade for Stamkos. The cap implications as well as injury history. Competing/contending teams dont have the cap space. Lottery teams are not giving up futures of value for Stamkos

I would think they would need to eat some of his cap #. Stamkos @ 6.5 may bring back something

I can see that. But I think that Kreider had a bit more ......determination? Is that the proper word to use?

I am not suggesting that he should not be given a chance, just that he needs to start playing with what at least appears to be a pretty sizeable toolbox.
I think CK was much more comfortable in his skill set at the same age. I mean even when he came up during the playoff run he had an idea how to effectively use his tools, but he needed a lot of refinement to become a more consistent player. I know people are always left wanting more from the guy, but he turned himself into a damn important player for a good hockey teams. I just think that Gauthier is a ways behind and figuring out how to get those tools underneath him. He's developed a scoring touch at lower levels, but there's more for him that he needs to tackle now. I think he became linear in his success and a minor pro And now he's just going to have to go through that adjustment. Where he's going to have to learn the rest of the game to become a consistent productive contributor. It'll take some time but I do think he's got a chance to be a quality mid-six player

Minnesota is liable to do something dumb and they've been desperate for a center.

So what do you guys think will happen with Strome. The fact that he wasn’t Qualified is very telling. I admit I was never big in Strome because I felt he obviously benefited from playing with Panarin and whenever he wasn’t with him he looked lost. I wasn’t opposed to keeping him on a short term deal but it doesn’t look likely now

Trade.

It's really hard to justify letting him walk for nothing.

One interesting thing that I would like to know if he has thought about is PATRICK LAINE... How nice would that be. I would trade Buche, DeAngelo and our 2nd 1st rd pick with maybe another sweetener for Laine.
You are getting into an area of what an offer would like for Eichel.

I'm sure it's a big factor. To get AP they absolutely have to get out from under the Fleury contract. It's a huge contract coming in with no money going out. At least with ADA it's likely they'd send some money back to the Rangers.

The problem for them is moving Fleury with 50% retention doesn't get them anywhere close to the space they need for Pietrangelo. They're right up against the cap with Stephenson and Cousins to sign. Two guys they seem to really like.

Still in the air, but right now it doesn't look like there will be movement pre-draft.

I think teams want to see who isn't getting a new contract and who might be available in the draft before they start swapping assets.
So then they should be qualifying strome soon right?

You are probably right. Gorton has made some nice moves and I am sure he has some things on the stove. One interesting thing that I would like to know if he has thought about is PATRICK LAINE... How nice would that be. I would trade Buche, DeAngelo and our 2nd 1st rd pick with maybe another sweetener for Laine. A young 22 yr old that would be under team control for 3 years and would give us lines Panarin, Laine. Kreider, Kaako, Lafreiniere, and Kartsov as our wingers. For the time being we would roll with Z and Chytil as our centers. A call would have to be later on Z but think about how skilled and young we would be for years to come. This would give us a chance not just to be contenders every year but have DYNASTY!!!!

Laine is not as interesting as much as it is a bad idea.

Oh, I know and agree. But was more thinking that would come on wings as opposed to center to where I do not currently see a suitable Strome replacement
I guess my question though would be how are you mixing that up on the wings? I mean you see teams try to make changes to the periphery players that aren't the main drivers of a team and it really does anything to actually change The overall feel to the team. I guess Tampa would be a team that goes against that narrative, but they had the players with that underlying pushback and grit already into their game. The players they brought in just complimented it even more. When I look at the team that we have right now you're mean places to make significant changes in those top two lines to make them harder to play against are 2c and 1rw. It's just really hard to look at a team and say I want to be harder to play against while having a pure finesse superstar on a line stapled to a very vanilla player that also plays a skilled game and then wanting kakko to move up into that rw and be the guy that adds the lemon to the tea. I want kakko getting that chance to move up, but I want him to become his own player, not try to become a different player than strome and panarin just bc we need the diversity. I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself well or not, so I apologize if not
