I am going out on a limb to say that was mainly Theordore's doing.

If you look at Martinez's possession metrics from the last few years, they're.....bad

Alec Martinez Stats | Hockey-Reference.com
For sure, Theodore was the better player. Martínez was also on some bad LA teams during that timespan. He is still a minutes eater than can play serviceable on a top pairing with a small financial commitment.

And this is completely true. Wennberg, Turris, Haula, Girgensons, Larsson, Soderberg. Their aren't THAT many teams with cap space...
Good that would hopefully mean if we give one of these guys a shot it should come at a "bargain" right?!

This is true, but his relative stats are bad. Last year specifically they were really bad.

I'm not saying Martinez wouldn't be 'okay' as a 6/7 depth LD. My issue with him is that the Rangers have a guy in Smith who honestly is exactly this and paid the same amount. AND he knows the system and can plug in at wing if need be.

San Jose is in that weird in between space right now. If they got decent goal tending I could see them fighting for a playoff spot with their high end talent. It was crazy living there when they made that cup in run in 2016 though, it's a shame they didn't win

I don’t think Smith is better than Martínez at all. I’m not going to riot if Martínez doesn’t come here obviously but it wouldn’t hurt to get a guy in like that for a year that they wouldn’t have to protect from Seattle, and (unfortunately) have cup winning experience too.

More for ownership I think. Look they tried to build around stars, and you can do that when you are destination city. When you are not, said star cannot bring players to your Market. Five years later with Jack, the best players that they had are the ones that they had to trade for. That's what killed their depth.

They have a second shot at it with Dahlin. As I posted before, an Eichel trade erases all of the sins. Josh Allen wasn't a big name either, and he was no Kyler Murray to the Cardinals. But on BUF, he's a top talent that's leading his team.

If you are going to get say 5 players that can play and play well for you, and get more points than Eichel could produce alone, a better team defense, perhaps even goaltending. That's going to get you closer to having that team around Dahlin. All of the players that Dahlin came up with are a few years behind the ones that Eichel came up with, and if you have a team around them, then you have a collection of talent and youth that are going to be with your organization for a while.

Yeah I think if they said "We're moving on from the Eichel/Reinhart/Ristolainen" era they could certainly do pretty well to improve their team. I don't think it's as hard of a PR sell as people are making it out to be. Especially if the team comes out of the gate well in the shortened season. Might impact season-ticket sales but who knows if fans will even be permitted for most of the year?

It's a calculated risk but could really pay off for them.

Psysk is right sided and was moved to wing at some points this season. Forbot and Hutton has never been better and I think both were on the Kings when Martínez was too. Demelo is another righty.

Rangers need a lefty that can at least be able to fill in on a top pair. Martínez is the only one of those that has shown that.

Martinez cannot handle top pair minutes.

All of those guys, regardless of their handed ness, would do a better job with them. I don't even want any of them, but they're all better options than Martinez who has been quite bad for a while now.

ACTUALLY, if we go through a big chunk of the season without fans in the buildings, this is a PERFECT time to trade Eichel.

That team has things that they can do to rebuild properly. The fact that they Dahlin is HUGE. What they need to do is build depth and add picks/prospects who can come up together.

It's ironic, some teams get their star players towards the beginning of their rebuild and those players almost drag the team into perpetual mediocrity. Eichel and McDavid being good examples. Some teams get their star players towards the end of their rebuilds and it propels them to the next level. See TB with Hedman and the Rangers with Lafreniere.

Exactly, and as luck would have it for both the likes of Eichel and McDavid, they don't draw tier one free agents. TB made it to Game 7 of the ECF with a 20 yearold Hedman. The lightning have had their ups and downs, but as special as the moment Stamkos had in the finals, he only played what 2-3 minutes on a championship run. Are Eichel and Stamkos that far apart in terms of production? The broken body of Tyler Seguin didn't produce a lot of offense (Kudos to Tyler, what a warrior), but the DAL team was carried by Heiskanen.

BUF has that elite defenseman, and we've seen championship level teams where the blueliner was the best player. So yes, I totally agree with you and think that you are right. They can rebuild properly, but they also don't have to wait another 5 years to do so with an Eichel trade. The GM may be going for youth here, but BUF needs guys that aren't 2-3 years away. They need guys that can play right away and grow with the core.
