Rangers have options, they don't have to take a bad trade. Clearly the Rangers havent gotten an offer they want for Kreider since he's still here, but since they're not desperate they can wait. It might even be possible that Rangers management nudged Brooks towards Shattenkirk buyout just to make that clear to everyone.Nothing good can come out of a last minute trade like this right now. Who cares about the optics of the team selling at the deadline. If Hall is signed, Kreider will be the big fish barring injuries. This is most likely Brooks covering all possibilities if Shattenkirk doesn't get bought out.
Guys, they're not going to do anything stupid just to get cap compliant. They're waiting to see what options they have available to them, and then, when the time comes, they'll take the best available – even if that means the least worst.
As of right now, it's looking like a Smith buyout with... I dunno, maybe a deal at $0.70 on the dollar for Strome/Namestnikov at 50% retained. We'll have a sense if this is the case tomorrow at noon.
What they will not do is blow their last meaningful asset to deal for less than optimal value.

I'm guessing that if they use a buyout then the price for Kreider becomes higher than it has been all offseason. Because then we could feasibly keep him, or simply move him at the deadline without any issues holding him until then.Guys, they're not going to do anything stupid just to get cap compliant. Wouldn’t Smith have to be on waivers already?
This was covered like a dozen times today.Wouldn’t Smith have to be on waivers already?

Truer words my friend. This was a lottery team last year. Despite their offseason, this team shouldn’t be interested in simple, easy moves. Just the right ones

Apparently, he only has to be notified of the buyout during the window. Notice is given the same time he's placed on waivers. Ergo, tomorrow at noon we'll know.
Gotcha my bad, haven’t been able to follow as much
True, but that would also mean the price is more on Kreider, and it would also mean (very, very likely) that we had used a buyoutIt also means they could retain salary more easily

Puljujarvi is the new Nichushkin. The idea of him is so much better than the player. No one should want him.
Puljujarvi is one of those guys I would be okay with as a throw in on a larger deal, but I would absolutely not give up anything of value for him specifically.Puljujarvi is the new Nichushkin. The idea of him is so much better than the player. No one should want him.
The Oilers are barren of usable assets. Puljujarvi is not a reason to engage them. He is a further reason to runPuljujarvi is one of those guys I would be okay with as a throw in on a larger deal, but I would absolutely not give up anything of value for him specifically.
