It is probably checking in with suitors saying “this is the current price for Kreider, and it is a fair price - but after we use this buyout the price goes up, if he is even traded at all.”

Nothing good can come out of a last minute trade like this right now. Who cares about the optics of the team selling at the deadline. If Hall is signed, Kreider will be the big fish barring injuries. This is most likely Brooks covering all possibilities if Shattenkirk doesn't get bought out.
Rangers have options, they don't have to take a bad trade. Clearly the Rangers havent gotten an offer they want for Kreider since he's still here, but since they're not desperate they can wait. It might even be possible that Rangers management nudged Brooks towards Shattenkirk buyout just to make that clear to everyone.

I'm sure the rest of the league is well aware of the Rangers timeline and cap situation, so they're probably calling to see if they can get Kreider at a discount so the Rangers can maybe avoid the pricier buyout on Shattenkirk.

Guys, they're not going to do anything stupid just to get cap compliant. They're waiting to see what options they have available to them, and then, when the time comes, they'll take the best available – even if that means the least worst.

As of right now, it's looking like a Smith buyout with... I dunno, maybe a deal at $0.70 on the dollar for Strome/Namestnikov at 50% retained. We'll have a sense if this is the case tomorrow at noon.

What they will not do is blow their last meaningful asset in a deal for less than optimal value.

As far as a team giving a Hayes like return for Kreider right now--first they'd have to really really want him and have the cap space--second they would want to be at least fairly confident they're going to be a playoff team or the 1st they give up is going to be a lottery pick--third they'd also want to be kind of sure that Kreider's willing to re-sign with them for a term and cap amount they're going to be happy with and last they're going to have to not be on the list of team's that Kreider won't go to.

This is really not the time of year we're going to get the best deal for him. At the deadline there will be multiple teams looking to bid for him--but right now things are really tight around the league as far as cap and there is uncertainty for many teams about just how good they are.

Kreider though is absolutely worth his cap hit--he is also a player we are going to miss.

Shattenkirk, Staal and Smith--none of them are worth their cap hits and all are replaceable from within. I don't understand why there would be tears for any of them. The Rangers should buy out either Shattenkirk or Staal but preferably Shattenkirk. Just easier and he's the most redundant. We're very likely to get screwed big time making a Kreider deal at this time.

Hopefully you're right.

Wouldn’t Smith have to be on waivers already?

It looks like a Shattenkirk buyout to me since nothing has been done. It's one simple, easy move, regardless of its the correct one or not.

I'm guessing that if they use a buyout then the price for Kreider becomes higher than it has been all offseason. Because then we could feasibly keep him, or simply move him at the deadline without any issues holding him until then.

So when do we know if a buyout happens? Is the deadline by midnight tonight?

Puljujarvi is the new Nichushkin. The idea of him is so much better than the player. No one should want him.

Puljujarvi is one of those guys I would be okay with as a throw in on a larger deal, but I would absolutely not give up anything of value for him specifically.

The Oilers are barren of usable assets. Puljujarvi is not a reason to engage them. He is a further reason to run
