We can put Smith on waivers tomorrow, so it's not really an issue today.
Problem is young players look up to older players that are in the game differently then retired guys. Also, players still in the game are in the weight room with them, in the locker room with them, in their ear all the time. The professional friend would not be.No one can answer this. It’s pointless to discuss.
And if this is the case, Staal can retire and we can hire him as a professional friend to young people.
I'm just trying to maybe see what Coach Quinn and the FO is seeing and maybe we aren't I think we can all agree that Staal is probably our worst dman (With Shatty not far behind). If they decide to buy out one over the other I trust they will be buying out the right one.

Oh please, spare us this garbage
And imagine thinking that playing with DeAngelo makes Staal a worse player lol
In fairness (just off the top of my head) there hasn't been much drafted defensive talent to mentor lol.How do we know that Staal is a good mentor? Because people say he is? People also say he's a good penalty killer. He's not. I've asked this before but which defenseman has Staal "mentored" into becoming a great defenseman? The only 1st pairing D we've developed in his time has been McDonagh who was a 12th overall pick. Why wasn't he able to mentor anyone else into quality players?
We're in the business of getting good players not getting nice guys.
Yeah that’s what will happen to the advanced stats when bc of a lack of lefties and skjei stinking up the joint for large portions of the season, staal is out there with pionk or Ada against NHL top lines. Duhh.
Staal is so much better than given credit for. It’s such a joke. One of the top 15 rangers dman careers of all time and you got guys on the internet who have never played at any level smearing him SMH
Yes. Apparently the deadline is simply to file the buyout paperwork, and the player does not actually have to clear waivers before the deadline.Wait is this true? I thought they had to complete the buyout by tomorrow at 5pm and therefore they needed to give the player the option of waivers 24 hours in advance, so noon today

Given the paltry draft choice return, you are probably right here. All Ottawa does is try to save money. Almost every move they have made has been to take been less salary. It is fairly safe to say if they are acquiring a player it is with them paying a minimal amount. If Gaborik/MacArthur weren't insured at 80% I feel fairly confident that they would be traded to a team (like the Rangers) who are willing to pay real dollars in exchange for cap relief.
Staal is a hockey player, not a guidance counselor
I don’t need want Staal there for the money he’s making. I don’t understand this Shattenkirk needs to be sheltered argument at all. Staal is abysmal but for some reason everyone is fine lining him up against a firing squad.
Unfortunately for you, you are not the coach and the decision maker. Stall is going nowhere. The reality is that Staal had the 2nd worst shot attempt differential in the league last year. I don’t want him anywhere near young players.
I can also see Shattenkirk dropping 45 points in a Devils jersey this season, not something I could say for B. Smith.
Devils already have Vatanen, Subban, and Severson on their right side. Don't see them signing someone like Shattenkirk at this point. That ship has sailed.
