So was that noon deadline for Smith/Staal/etc. all just a bunch of hogwash?
Deadline for Staal and Shattenkirk (and theoretically Lundqvist) is tomorrow at 5pm, since they are exempt from waivers (they have to be offered the option, but they can decline and there's no need for anyone to spill the beans that the offer was made). Deadline for anyone else on the team (making over ~$3.5MM AAV) is tomorrow at noon, since they would have to be placed on waivers.

EDIT: most of us were confused about this as well, but a couple of our sleuths figured out that it was just the paperwork that needs to be filed during the window. The actual buyout – for those players subject to waivers – can happen outside the window.

Ah, some reading around here gave me the impression that they would have to clear waivers by noon tomorrow - as in they would have had to have been placed on waivers by noon today

I think when people say stuff like "Staal is a good mentor" they're talking about stuff like teaching rookies and young players how to train and prepare as a pro, go about your business and conduct yourself, not about developing skills or abilities.

Yes... because the other thing would be a coach.

Yes...but people in this thread have been talking about "how many players developed into stars under Staal's mentorship!!" which is a dumb thing to say

Very telling how GM's feel about Names. A 26 year old that scored 48 points just a few years ago. Never wanted him as part of that trade and its telling how it's having a negative effect on this offseason right now. His scoring was a product of playing with top talent. I'm sure if you polled everyone on this board over 50 percent would trade him for nothing right now. Actually some of us would attach a 3rd or 4th just to get rid of his money. JG hopefully can find a way to get rid of Names and then buyout Smith or Staal.
You need to consider this salary $4m for a full year for what he brings is not cheap. If the Rangers do trade him, I am betting that there's retention.

Names really changed his game and was a solid player. He would be a very good third line player, albeit he would need to be on a cheaper contract or a good rider on a line with very high end players.

True i could see retaining 1-1.5 million and him becoming an effective third line player somewhere.

Anton Stralman really turned his career around as Staal's partner. Put it on the board!

Russo’s article mentions Chiarelli, please dear god let Minnesota hire him

Would probably be good for us with PCs relationship to Gorton. Always felt that PC owed us one after the Talbot trade. Florida went nuts after that deal and threatend to go to Bettman since they made us a better offer if I remember correctly.

LOL I really hope that's true but I don't think it is.

I think Florida Jimmy Hayes was the centerpiece in the Florida offer, which is... not what you want.

There are, usually, 23 players on a team, and numerous coaches. I don't think they need one guy in particular to show them those things.

Even if thats the case, whats the price you put on that?

Is it worth possibly stunting the growth of a young kid(s)? I think these are all things that can be covered by guys who are here and aren't Staal and even if they can't, can be provided by a cheaper and more effective body via UFA.

No one can answer this. It’s pointless to discuss.
Management has stated that he is a leader and mentor. Players have mentioned it. Our own insiders have alluded to it.

It then would be equally pointless to discuss the leadership of any player that has ever played.
And if this is the case, Staal can retire and we can hire him as a professional friend to young people.
Rather silly don't you think? Again, it is worth nothing that the only thing that is pointless to discuss is a scenario that is probably not occurring. As such, discussing a defense without Staal for next year is more than likely not very realistic. One needs to take their personal views out of this. We can certainly discuss how much he will be playing, but not to have him in picture if not a basis for reality.
