LOL I really hope that's true but I don't think it is.

I think Florida Jimmy Hayes was the centerpiece in the Florida offer, which is... not what you want.

My memory could definitely be wrong, but I do have a recollection of that Fla was really pissed and felt that they made a better offer that was turned down unfairly...

Yeah I remember that. But threatening to go to Bettman? Were they gonna tattle on us?

Buying out Shattenkirk makes zero sense for a few reasons.

The most important one though is what are the optics of buying him out after the 2nd year of a 4 year deal? Doesn't look good to other future free agents that may want to come here.

They bought out Richards, traded Gaborik, and buried Redden and Smith. The optics don't seem to matter.

Place Redden in the minors and other players won't want to come here...

Yeah, it didn't happen then either. Shattenkirk hasn't produced. That's the bottom line, and hockey is a business. Players understand that.

If we buy out Shatty, we can make everything else work depending on what ADA and Lemieux get. If we buy out someone else, we have to make another move. What's the other move? Should we buy out Smith or Staal, then hope that another team will help us out?

If the team buys out Shattenkirk, Petrovic is a guy I'd look into on a 1 year, lo dollar deal, say $1m.
Why? Petrovic is garbage

I’d rather just keep Lindgren as the 7D and roll with
Skjei-Trouba
Staal-DeAngelo
Hajek-Fox
Lindgren
Smith

Rykov will probably be ready to get some minutes later in the year

He was injured towards the end of the year prior to last year. Before that he was a pretty good bottom-pairing guy. He'd just be cheap depth. I would also assume Smith would be in Hartford

buying out Shattenkirk is the worst move they can make.

It would be a blemish on this offseason.

stuff about mentorship and leadership aside, we are guaranteeing ourselves to be a worse team by keeping Staal and it totally contradicts the other moves we've made to this point.

They've been improving but it's frustrating that they still have to have their one blankie.

With Quinn as the head coach I don't think we need a mentor like Staal. Quinn isn't a hands off AV type of coach. If kids aren't playing the way they're supposed to they get a talking to by the coach and then benched. Staal has to be quite the magician in the locker room for him to still be playing.

There's a difference between top-down mentorship and peer mentorship. You need both.
