If Shattenkirk is the guy the gets bought out, I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign a cheap RD. I know some of you are going to throw up in your mouths at the thought of some of these, but here are the UFAs still out there who played any games in the NHL last year

Girardi
McQuaid
Lovejoy
Petrovic
Gryba
If Michael Stone is bought out by Calgary (likely) he would be an excellent candidate

Shattenkirk wouldn’t be in Waivers but Smith I’d think would be by now.

I’m really amazed we haven’t seen something yet. Does Gorton have a rabbit in his hat he’s going to pull out and somehow avoid a buyout with a trade??

How do we know that Staal is a good mentor? Because people say he is? People also say he's a good penalty killer. He's not. I've asked this before but which defenseman has Staal "mentored" into becoming a great defenseman? The only 1st pairing D we've developed in his time has been McDonagh who was a 12th overall pick. Why wasn't he able to mentor anyone else into quality players?
McDonagh developed in Staal’s absence

DAMN I can't believe it's almost August and summer is waning!!!

YEEEESSSS its almost AUGUST and summer is finally waning!!!

Staal still has a role on the team. That's to stay at home and be a regular on the PK. To grind it out against bigger forwards--the thankless stuff and no he's not great at it but it's still a role.

The reason we signed Shattenkirk was for offense from the blueline-he was never a great defender and now the offense really isn't there either and he's got a wobbly knee besides. Trouba's going to get power play time and play in all situations. If we keep Shattenkirk whatever power play time he gets is going to come out of DeAngelo's hide. So $6.5 mil for a guy we're going to shelter and also take offensive opportunities away from a younger, better, cheaper player? Losing his power play time means losing his role. And there's no way I'd move Shattenkirk to the left side---he has enough issues playing on the right.
Staal doesn’t have a role on this team. He is atrocious at everything you mentioned. I would rather have Shattenkirk playing the Staal role because I think he is far and away a better defensive dman than Staal is.

Let's look at the buyout scenarios.....again.

2019-2020
Giradi = $3.611m
Beleskey (buried) = $.825m
Staal = $2.9m
Smith = $.970833m
Spooner = $.3m
Total Dead Cap Space = ~$8.6m

2020-2021
Girardi = $1.11m
Staal = $3.7m
Smith = $3.145m
Spooner = $.3m
Total Dead Cap Space= ~$8.255m
Key players to sign = Lemieux (maybe), ADA (maybe), Georgiev, Strome
Players off the cap = Kreider, Namestnikov, Fast

2021-2022
Girardi = $1.11m
Staal = $1.2m
Smith = $1.1456m
Total Dead Cap Space = $3.456m
Key Players to re-sign = Hajek, Chytil, Andersson, Howden, Buchnevich
Players off the cap = Shattenkirk, Hank

2022-2023
Girardi = $1.11m
Staal = $1.2m
Smith = $1.1456m
Total Dead Cap Space = $3.456m
Key players to re-sign = Kravtsov, Kakko, Zibanejad, Fox, Lemieux (maybe), ADA (maybe)

I really think it's better to continue accumulating assets when possible (wait to trade Namesnikov and Kreider until they get fair value) and just bite the bullet on the buyouts. They have room this year to carry both the Smith and Staal buyouts. They will have room next year as well, no issues there based on who they need to re-sign. After that, the 'dead cap space' is pretty minimal.
Like it but not because I want to. GMS are gonna wait out the buyouts yo see if there’s free assets.

McDonagh developed in Staal’s absence
Maloney said it multiple times during the season on the bleeding blue shirts podcast. The team loves staal, the kids love him. Shattenkirk on the other hand they had to handle to kidgloves and manage.

Come on now.

Trouba, Ada, Fox, Smith

No room for shattenkirk. Get the cap space

Staal is so much better than given credit for. It’s such a joke. One of the top 15 rangers dman careers of all time and you got guys on the internet who have never played at any level smearing him SMH
Oh please, spare us this garbage

And imagine thinking that playing with DeAngelo makes Staal a worse player lol

Yeah that’s what will happen to the advanced stats when bc of a lack of lefties and skjei stinking up the joint for large portions of the season, staal is out there with pionk or Ada against NHL top lines. Duhh.

I don't think Staal is as bad as some make out but he lost a lot after those two head injuries. Other issues are that's he's an older player now and the game has changed to puck moving D's more than just stay at home guys and IMO the Tortorella years did no real favors for either him or Girardi. They both got locked into playing a kind of game that's now dated.

We're in the business of getting good players not getting nice guys.

And if their only purpose is to serve as mentors, you're best served by keeping the one who is better at that. That's the thinking.
I'm just trying to maybe see what Coach Quinn and the FO is seeing and maybe we aren't I think we can all agree that Staal is probably our worst dman (With Shatty not far behind). If they decide to buy out one over the other I trust they will be buying out the right one.

We can put Smith on waivers tomorrow, so it's not really an issue today.

I think it's a mistake to trade Kreider before we're cap compliant. He's our last chip and this team needs to use it to ensure we draft/trade for a young center with top 6 potential. I don't see anyone else on the roster that will get us another 1st round draft pick or a very good prospect.

It strikes me you're arguing just for the sake of it now. I don't think you'd really want to see Shatty killing penalties on the left side. We need at least two defensemen on either side doing that or do we move Shatty to the left side and then shelter him there too? I wouldn't--not for the kind of money he's making.

Shattenkirk buyout coming!

No way fox starts in the NHL, especially if Shattenkirk ends up sticking around. He is a PP specialist and a rookie. Is he really going to bounce ADA, Trouba(who just signed a monster contract and had his most productive season ever with some PP time), and potentially Shattenkirk? All 3 of those guys have well known value as a PPQB. There is no room on this roster for Fox right now. He will have to force his way on, which imo is how it should be for a player in his situation.

Regardless of Staal vs Shattenkirk, Staal is undoubtedly better than Brendan Smith, and a Smith buyout saves us more cap this offseason than Staal.

I thought Smith was the easy choice here.

Don’t be so sure. Some of the assets that the Coyotes acquired through the years fame with less than 80% insurance.

All Ottawa does is try to save money. Almost every move they have made has been to take been less salary. It is fairly safe to say if they are acquiring a player it is with them paying a minimal amount. If Gaborik/MacArthur weren't insured at 80% I feel fairly confident that they would be traded to a team (like the Rangers) who are willing to pay real dollars in exchange for cap relief.

How much influence do you think Staal has had on Skjei and DeAngelo? When answering this question, remember that mentorship in this case is not about teaching a player how to play the game, but rather how to do all the other stuff that's necessary to maximize your talent.

I don’t need want Staal there for the money he’s making. I don’t understand this Shattenkirk needs to be sheltered argument at all. Staal is abysmal but for some reason everyone is fine lining him up against a firing squad.

No one can answer this. It’s pointless to discuss.

And if this is the case, Staal can retire and we can hire him as a professional friend to young people.

neither are good players tho. If we want ADA to play consistently and I'm sure most of us do that means Fox has to play in Hartford. Shatty is taking away that spot. But hey if the Ranger FO believes that is the best place for Fox to start next year then fine.
Would we prefer Trouba-Skjei, ADA-Hajek, Fox-Staal OR Trouba-Skjei, ADA-Hajek, Shatty-Lindgren/Rykov?
